Looking at the genealogy tables it would appear that Paladin Took was 82 years of age before he became Thain. Pippin would have been 25 years old at that time. Up until then, Ferumbras III held the title. Nor was Ferumbras Pippin's grandfather, but a distant cousin, so the dynasty was not that obvious.
