· Chapter 22: The Daughter of No-One
i was so distraught over the last chapter, that i forgot to sign my name. basically from here on out, i'm just going to take your word for it that it's darkest before dawn, and hope that it will be well with durfinwen. it's too cruel to afflict such a delightful, jolly creature with so much suffering to not have her be well in the end (or as well as possible). and don't forget about his majesty the king! what's happening to thranduil and the elves and dwarves?! i'm trusting to hope, but eager and anxious to find out what's going on!
Author's reply
Trust to hope! I don't usually write sad stories. This fic is about the worst one I've written, and I plan to wrap things up nicely. Don't worry, and enjoy the next chapter!

I didn't know you would go this far, Le Rouret! It is very, very rough, but it is also tremendously moving. It's a mark of what a good writer you are that you can drag us this far into a world full of terror and sorrow and yet keep us riveted. And have it mean something.
My strong sense, as I read this chapter and the previous ones, is that this isn't dark just for the sake of darkness, it's in service to something larger. I don't know what the larger thing is, but I trust you to get us to the "right" place by the end of the story (hope you trust yourself!). I have to admit, I've given up trying to read the clues and am just letting it all wash over me. Which means I am already - a few hours after my first reading of this chapter - longing and longing for the next one.
Am now considering having a strong drink.
(PS special to Nieriel Raina - I don't envy you right now, but am extra grateful to you for doing the vital beta work!)
Author's reply
Thanks for your nod to NiRi; she's a superlative beta, and my chapters would look really silly without her help.
Honestly, I had no idea the story would go "this far" either. That darn muse! She really needs a good, stern talking-to.
Thanks for reviewing!

· Chapter 22: The Daughter of No-One
Ugh. This is emotionally draining. I am sad for all of them; Legolas for having to bear such crushing responsibility; Durfinwen for obvious reasons (how might she be able to come back from this, if at all); Tamin for presumably having his innocence so cruelly lost. This chapter, as with everything you write, has so many things going on at once, and I am enormously impressed with your ability to stay in control of each of them while weaving them together. And that can be extended to refer to the way the story reads as a whole, even though there is often a week or more between updates. It feels like it has been months since this story began, and it is the first of yours I've read as a work in progress, so it has been a very different reading experience, wondering week after week what will happen next instead of being able to click to the next chapter and find out. I really wasn't sure you could top the angst and drama of The Heir of Meduseld, but you have done so and more in this story.
Oh! I reread a couple of chapters and one of your author notes said that you have a plot bunny for the next installment of The Green Knight. Um. AKLDFKDS. I will be there with bells on.
And finally, have I figured out the nightingale? I have a few theories but nothing I'm ready to commit to. I'm also trying to figure out if Durfinwen's history with Legolas' family -- the last of her kind, came to them as a baby, etc -- is simply the establishment of a backstory or a larger puzzle. It has come up too many times now (which ultimately I love because Durfinwen is a favourite of mine). And there's also the issue of Tamin's moonstone pendant and the way the Master and the Master's Master (?) and its minions are terrified of dwarfs.
Best of luck with the next chapter -- I'll be checking the story obsessively for an update!
Author's reply
If you can figure out the nightingale, I will be REALLY impressed!
I'm so glad you're finding this story so intriguing. It's definitely been a challenge to write, even moreso than "Heir of Meduseld," which primarily dealt with "normal" angst. (Even the "ghosts of Fangorn" were flesh and blood.) I'm not sure why my muse has seen fit to punish me with this particularly vicious plot bunny, but it's been a wild ride, and we're not done yet!
Thanks for reviewing, and enjoy the next chapter!

Oh, dreadful! What *IS* Malbeach? I've had some horrible suspicions, but now I realize it's all right out of my reckoning, and much worse than *ANYTHING* I could guess...
Author's reply
Ah! But should you be asking, "What is Malbeach?" or, "WHY is Malbeach?"
Enjoy the next chapter!

I usually reread the chapter when you post it. I did not do that this time. Hope you don't mind. ;) This chapter was shocking, horrific, bone chilling, heart stopping, angst. I wept for them all. So broken, damaged and I fear there is much to come.
Someone or something needs to die and die badly. Whatever the force behind all this (I fear it goes well past a mere mortal man dabbling in magic), I can't wait for our heroes to whip it and whip it good. Shred, pulverize, PUREE!!!
That said, this was some incredible writing. The reader can see it all, feel with the characters and ache with them. It takes a talented author to pull a reader into a story where they can't look away no matter how much they wish to do so.
Now, about Durfinwen... Where did you live again?

This is a very dark fic. I have so many emotions mixed now. You are a great writer, this chapter has really affected me. I feel sorry for everyone there, Durfinwen, poor Durfinwen…how could she ever recover? my only hope is that she won’t remember half of this, because the dementia that she is suffering now. Tamin, for sure he will lost his innocence after this, no doubt (I do remember Fastred vision of Tamin been a Knight, so I’m holding to that and believing in him surviving this terrible time) When you have Legolas smelling him and comparing the before and after, it did break my heart, because it is an affirmation that nothing will be the same after this.
I notice that in presence of the Dwarves, the black spell or magic or whatever is, breaks, their victims are able to get some control, well if you call control to want to get kill, it is so sad to hear her pleading for death, and the end…You know, my strongest thought when I finished the chapter was Enough is enough, we need to start killing people, we need action, we need revenge…my, you have made me want to be there with a sword and cutting the master in pieces…
I have this disturbing question; Melina has her stomach gone because they eat babies?
You see, I’m imagining so many dark things…I’ll go and re-read Mardil courting story to light my day…I don’t need to tell you that I can’t wait for an update and that I’m so worry for them, and scary, and sad, mad, angry..I want five minute with you Muse!
Thanks and great chapter!

Yes, I know, another painfully short review from me, I should have put them all into one, but OMG, something just hit me -- Renna's hair! Oh, wow. Poor, poor Durfinwen. If only we could go back to when she was throwing slippers at Legolas for getting her mixed up in silly matchmaking against her will. (Well, we can, but you know what I mean.)
Good luck with the next chapter. I'll be on pins and needles waiting to see if, and hoping for, Durfinwen to make it.

I can't even begin to tell you how I feel about what I just read. Oh my god. That's not to say it's not excellent -- it is -- just so very disturbing. Bloodcurdling, even. Poor Durfinwen, Belias and Melima. Poor Tamin.
Author's reply
What I find even more disturbing is that I wrote it. My muse must be getting back at me for having to leave tequila and pool-boy in Cabo.

I'm heartsick over this chapter. Please, please don't leave us here for too long! Poor Durfinwen. Hers might be the hardest to bear. What torment these poor Elves have suffered. Make them pay, Legolas and Gimli! Make them pay!

Mahal!...I'm speechless, this is so creepy, scary. I wanted Durfinwen to de alive, but I wasn't expecting this.. Did you write this after Halloween? I read this chapter last night and I was so impressed that couldn't review. It remind me a book that I read many years ago, some stories by Lovecraft (not sure if the name is right) that scaried me so bad, that I couldn’t read that kind of literature for years. Anyway, you are a great writer, I don't know how to describe how good you are, and those three elves are still hunting me! But even if I'm terrified, I can't wait for more...
I was wondering if Galas & Faramir won't show up. I remember in one of your stories that Galas knew that something was wrong in Rohan when the wife of one of Legolas’ warriors had collapsed because her husband has died or they thought (which was right). Then, if Kaimelas died (I hate your muse, you know) his wife should had sense something (BTW, I want to know what happen to him)
About the barrel, it make me to remember something that I read about the classic fairy tales that we know now, that they are adaptations of stories from the Dark Age, when the villain was punished with very evil, creative and bloody ways, such as the barrel with nails, wearing hot iron shoes, etc...
And I'm very bloodthirsty too, someone needs to die and bad...I'm trying to think who the Master is, a Nazgul maybe?
Last, I'm with your beta, mad with you and asking for a happy end, I just wanted Legolas fall in love with Durfinwen...
Please, update soon and can't wait.
Thanks, Fantasia

Thanks, Fantasia! I'm glad you're enjoying the fic. It's certainly not the easiest thing I've ever written. Halloween was tame by comparison.

“Mahal,” said Gimli, his axe trembling. “It is Dúrfinwen!”
I never saw this coming. I had counted on her being dead like the rest. I should be grateful she is alive. Instead, I am absolutely horrified! This is so dark and creepy and horrifically delicious! I can't stop reading, can't look away. And just when I think things cannot get any worse, you take it there. O.O
I just LOVE your writing, creepy or not. It pulls me in and I can't stop. I fall in love with the characters; even their horses have great personality! The intensity and pacing is wonderful and I can't wait for more!
Just give me a happy ending. Let the heroes kick some major evil butt. And write me a Green Knight falls in love and gets married and lives happily ever after! :p I had NIGHTMARES after this chapter! :o

· Chapter 20: An Unlikely Alliance
I do believe this is the first time that I have reviewed any of your work, though I have (by now) read everything of your that I can find.
I am not going to comment on the Pottymouth universe. (Though there are things that I liked about it, there were others that I did not; in any event, I am trying to wean myself off the NC-17 stuff.)
The Green Knight universe, I have to say, amazes me. I confess that at first I thought it was an utterly ridiculous idea. Tournaments and jousts in Middle-Earth? But after a while the idea grew on me. Tolkien after all referred to Imrahil's "knights", and there was always a sense (for me, at least), that Middle Earth was in our distant past. And given that (in our more *recent* past) the European knights (at least) did have tournaments and jousting (or so the literature suggests)... one could make a plausible argument in favor of jousting tournaments in Gondor.
What first sold me on it, I think, was the absolutely wonderful descriptions of the horses. I am a city girl myself, and know nothing about horses, but you brought them to life and gave them their own distinct characters astonishingly well. Hatchet was a favorite of mine, his mad bellowing charges a delight to read, and I was sad at his demise (and latter, Pikukka's).
The twists and turns and intrigues and escalating danger of the GK tournament also ensnared me. Who's the villian? What next? And when Legolas went to his esquire's rescue and was (at least to those of his fellow knights who went to his aid) unmasked - that was an awesome scene.
The friendship between Legolas and his mortal neighbors is a wonderful part of the GK universe (and it is a nice change that among the canonical characters it is (also very logically) focused on Faramir and Eowyn, instead of Aragorn and Arwen).
The supporting OCs are all well characterized and (excepting the villians) sympathetic. Tamin is charming, Fastred sulky (I have a teen and I know what that is like), Legolas' fellow knights (I loved the story of Mardil's courtship) and the Dol Galenehtar Elves all a pleasure to read about.
This particular story, while perhaps the darkest of those you have written so far, has also got its grip on me. I fear what has happened to Thranduil (that he mercifully does not recall) and the townspeople of Esgaroth (and now, perhaps, Dale). I *love* the Erebor Dwarves! Malbeach and Renna are horrid, and need to be dealt with promptly (I like the Dwarvish solution). I fear for Durfinwen (I suspect Legolas is sweeter on her than he knows) and Kaimelas (NO! NOT KASSAH!).
In short, I look forward to the continuation of this excellent action/adventure/drama story, and hopefully for more GK stories to follow.
Author's reply
Wow! I was very overwhelmed at first with this review; then I saw that you were in essence reviewing all of my fics at once.
First of all, thank you for taking the time to not only read my scribblings, but to tell me what you think of them. I'm very flattered, and appreciate your comments. I too love my OCs, my horses, and the Green Knight universe.
Secondly, "Pottymouth" was a (very old) experiment; I've played around with sequels, but I've kind of grown cold on it. It was fun, full stop; I think there's more potential for both humor and pathos is direct narrative. And yes, there are parts that I dislike about it, too, upon reflection.
Thirdly ... yes, I shall continue! Chapter 21 is in the works and I hope to finish it this week.
Thank you, again, for your comprehensive review!
