! Kaimelas? That was a fantastic chapter.

Author's reply

Yep, Kaimelas! Thanks!

Fantasia · 24 October 2008 · Chapter 20: An Unlikely Alliance

I'm glad that you have updated. Hope that everything is OK in your live and I'm happy that your muse returned. AS always, love the chapter, glad that Thranduil is better around the dwarves. I have many things to say, but too little time (I'm working) just if you kill Kaimelas I'll hunt your muse and find her whereever she hide, not matter how far...Thanks, someday I'll write a propper review...

Author's reply

LOL, thanks, Fantasia! I'm not too happy with my muse right now, either.

pennywhistle · 24 October 2008 · Chapter 20: An Unlikely Alliance

Oh, thank you for this chapter! I knew you wouldn't leave us with this tale unfinished, and it's been worthe the wait. It's a very satisfying installment; someone has finally been able to take a swing at the Master of Esgaroth, but you've left us in a most uncomfortable spot. Anxiety shall reign high until the next chapter. Thanks for sharing this with us, and we'll be here when you return with more of this fine story.

Author's reply

Thank you, Pennywhistle! I'm working on Ch. 21 as we speak. I'm hoping to have it back from the beta by next week.

I hope very much that real life has not becomme too overwhelming. I have been waiting so long for a update, or my fix as my kids call it. I am sending good thoughts and prayers your way, in hopes that all will be well soon, and your muse will return with many ideas and you might feel like taking pen to paper again soon. You have never not finished a story, and I am sure you will not leaving us hanging, I just hope all is well in the land of Le Rouret and family.

CandissD · 26 August 2008 · Chapter 19: The Elvenking

Oh my! You can't stop now :) Poor Thranduil! Please update soon! :D

Nieriel Raina · 24 August 2008 · Chapter 19: The Elvenking

I loved this chapter! I think it was a much needed tension break, and Kaimelas was just the one to give it to us...along with a mountain full of dwarves. :) I am very very worried about Thranduil, and just how he got into this position (or whatever position that witch had him in! :[ ) I'm so glad Thorin is there to help Thranduil as Gimli is helping Legolas. I wonder why the dwarves aren't susceptible but the elves and men are. I'm very much looking forward to the next chapter and have informed RL it will have to wait next time. :) Excellent stuff!

Thundera Tiger · 23 August 2008 · Chapter 19: The Elvenking

It seems that a drunken dwarf makes for a mellow dwarf. At least, that appears to be the case for Dwalin, and I'm sure he's got company. Fabulous chapter from start to finish! The image of various cutlery and condiments being used to illustrate battle plans made me laugh. Only Kaimelas! Well, and Thorin, too, I guess. I'm really enjoying your characterization of him, by the way. He feels very much like his father. In particular, I'm thinking of the time when Dain was practical enough to tell Thrain that reclaiming Moria would be a stupid idea. Thorin seems to have inherited that same practicality, and he's using it well. I'm very interested to know what the group from Dale was after. I'm still undecided as to whether or not Girion has thrown his lot in with Malbeach. Thorin didn't give them much of a chance to explain themselves, and if they're not in league with Malbeach, they're certainly not going to want to make more enemies by coming between the dwarves and elves. Fascinating little political scenario you're weaving here! The rest of the chapter proceeded very LotR-esque, but which I mean to say that it was narrated in broad, sweeping strokes. We moved forward very quickly, and I think that's exactly what you want at this point. I can sense something building, and this faster narrative put an edge of tension on that feeling. Baranil's dark hints didn't help make the story any lighter, though I am relieved to see that many of the elves seem ready to welcome the dwarves. That makes me happy. But that last section... Wow! Now I really want to know what's happened to Thranduil. And what in the world could possess him to seek out a dwarf! Argh, it's not a true cliffhanger (nobody's dying and Thranduil has improved), but nevertheless, I desperately want to know what happens next.

Dreamflower · 23 August 2008 · Chapter 19: The Elvenking

Oh my word! It's worse than I could possibly have imagined! What *has* Malbeach (or his wife) done to Thranduil? But it's a very hopeful sign that he recognizes Thorin as a friend and ally. And what's up with Girion, and Girion's son? Girion's in "poor health"? Could he too, be ensorcelled? But I'm glad that Kaimelas brought the Dwarves through safely, and that they are acknowledged as allies and not foes!

Fantasia · 22 August 2008 · Chapter 19: The Elvenking

I was right to be worry for Thranduil. Whatever spell is over him, it is very bad if his wife can't do anything for him. He remind me of Legolas when he couldn't sleep or eat, well he really seems worst, you description of him is scary. At least, he knows that he is not himself; I was thinking before this chapter that he wasn't even aware of what was happening to him. So, it seems that dwarves are immune to whatever black magic is in the air, Thorin effect in Thranduil was alike to Gimli's effect in Legolas during that dinner in Dale. I’m glad that the King has found help with Thorin, someone to break thru the fog. Now, as I said before, go to Dale and kill some people over there, it will be good if the Ithilien elf and men armies show up, that will be a great help. (Maybe will give Fastred an opportunity to reconcile with Tamir and I like Faramir and his friendship with legolas, so I would like to see him again) Waiting for next chapter, how are Durfinwen and the other ones? Kaimelas is not counting with them...I want to see Legolas and company in action. I did not comment previous chapter, but I love Kaimelas in his new role and it seems that he will keep it for a while, thanks to Thorin. As always, thanks for your story, love your writing, thanks too to your beta, she does a wonderful job, and keep posting. Fantasia

Naledi · 22 August 2008 · Chapter 19: The Elvenking

Oh, poor Thranduil! After the relative lightheartedness of the previous chapter it came as a real shock to see Thranduil in such a terrible state. I can't help feeling that it's of vital importance that Thorin's presence seems to have got through to Thranduil when no one else has been able to. But I haven't a clue why that should be. Best of luck for your child at the weekend!

Ithilien · 20 August 2008 · Chapter 18: A Thorn Amongst the Roses

I really didn't know Kaimelas well before reading this chapter, but I get a very good sense of him now. He truly speaks his mind, doesn't he? Poor Legolas having to put up with such a personality. Of course, Kaimelas says the same about his having to put up with Legolas, so all is fair and equal I guess. Thank you for this charming chapter! Now I wonder what they will face when they meet up with the elven king. It appears Thorin has been in a curmudgeonly mood, but Thranduil, from what has been written, appears vexed by some witchery. I'm hoping it's not true as things might not go as planned if the king cannot be opened to reason. There really is something wrong this side of the forest. I apologize for not reviewing the last chapter but I've been traveling a bit lately. Still, I do recall Legolas' dream rather well and I'm thinking I might be able to interpret portions of it. The snake... I'm thinking that is Malbeach. And the wasp is Renna. Those two are at odds but carry the same harm -- poison either way. The snake however is revealed to be only a caterpillar (or worm if you will) when the bird (Legolas' strength?) begins to direct his actions. Birds eat both worms and wasps, and the vexing ceases. I'm hoping Legolas can destroy his current foes, but truly have no idea what will happen next so will just wait to see if my interpretation of the dream is correct. More soon when you can!

Author's reply

Hello, Ithilien! Or should I call you Belteshazzar? Dream interpretation is a tricky thing, and oftimes what seems right to us one day will be disproved the next; other times we realize we are spot on and wish we'd paid attention. I will not tell you into which category your interpretation falls; like Nebuchadnezzar I like a little leeway. Now that Kaimelas has developed in this story, I'm getting a yen to go back to the original Green Knight story and make sure his personality adds up! Thanks for reviewing, Le Rouret

Naledi · 18 August 2008 · Chapter 18: A Thorn Amongst the Roses

*giggle* A valambassador - I like it! I think Legolas should make the title official as soon as things are back to normal. Certainly an ambassador would not use such language as 'bugger' but it seemed to do the trick far more effectively than an ambassador would have managed. Kaimelas is on fine form here. Now lets just hope that the Dwarves can knock some sense into the others.

Author's reply

I kind of like "valambassador" too; it sounds like "ambassador with the Valar's blessing." Though I doubt Kaimelas would see it that way! Dwarves are good at knocking things about; a little common sense would not go amiss here, would it? The next chapter is at the beta's and awaiting approval. Hopefully I'll get it up soon. Thanks for reviewing!

Robinscat · 13 August 2008 · Chapter 18: A Thorn Amongst the Roses

Oh! but this was a great chapter. I love Kaimelas! He is becoming one of my favorites. Right behind Legolas and Gimli. He handled Thorin beautifully. Idiots all of them. I love it!

Author's reply

When I was writing "The Green Knight and the Heir of Meduseld" and got to Chapter 9 in which Legolas and Théalof engage in courtly sparring, my brain actually got a severe cramp due to all the high-falutin' language. I determined that I would NOT do that to Kaimelas (or myself). If you'll recall from The Hobbit, Thorin Oakenshield could lay it on pretty thick; but I surmised that Dain's son might be a tad more earthy and less pompous, and therefore more appreciative of a "valambassador," as opposed to the garden variety. The balance of Elf to Dwarf is a tricky one, but enjoyable to explore. I'm glad you're enjoying it, too. Thanks for reviewing!

Dreamflower · 12 August 2008 · Chapter 18: A Thorn Amongst the Roses

ROTFL! I think I'm in love with Kaimelas! And he's a mathematician as well as a valambassador! *grin*

Author's reply

So many people have enjoyed my Kaimelas! His dialog is fun to write, too; almost as much fun as Bandy's. Thanks for reviewing! Chapter 19 is with my beta awaiting approval.

Thundera Tiger · 11 August 2008 · Chapter 18: A Thorn Amongst the Roses

I need to start this review out by confessing that I have been most remiss in my reviewing duties. I really should have been reviewing chapters as I caught up to them. Somehow, I cottoned on to this story rather late in the game, but I'm caught up now and I'm THOROUGHLY enjoying myself. What a tale you're weaving! All the important elements of plot and narrative are present and accounted for, but where you've really outdone yourself is with a host of distinctive, brilliantly drawn characters. This chapter, in particular, caught my attention and I was falling out of my seat laughing every time the valambassador said something. Poor Kaimelas. You have a gift for wry, deadpan humor! Love it! But perhaps most impressive of all is your ability to so quickly change the mood of a story. What started as a strange and bumbling attempt at diplomacy quickly turned to humor and then ultimately turned to a rousing call for action. And that's just this chapter. Your gift for turning on and off the intensity is almost matchless, and it's kept me on a roller coaster ride the entire way through. Thank you for such a fun journey so far, and here's hoping that it continues soon. I'm definitely on board for the duration!

Author's reply

Thank you; thank you! I'm flattered and very surprised by your review! You've been one of my "Author's Favorites" since I first started reading fanfiction in 2004 (in fact, "With Many 'Fond' Acknowledgements" is one of my all-time favorite short stories. “I was saddened to find no mention of Pippin inadvertently using Boromir’s shield as a sledge” remains one of the funniest lines in LotR fanfiction, in my opinion). I took my inspiration for the writing of "Soap Bubbles" from your method of "inserting" your fics within the confines of Tolkien's stories in "While the Ring Went South" and "During a Journey in the Dark," and your grammatical expositions in "Hewing Naught but Wood" and "Smiting Ruin" tickled the English Major Funny Bone in me. Like you, I am very bad at reviewing; thank you for taking the time to review this fic. The next chapter is with Nieriel Raina being beta'ed, and as soon as I feel it's ready to post, I'll put it up. Keep writing! Le Rouret

Nieriel Raina · 11 August 2008 · Chapter 18: A Thorn Amongst the Roses

Have I mentioned I like Kaimelas??? *grin* This is a nice and much needed interlude from the angst! I just adore your dwarves! You get them spot on, and I particularly loved Thorin! Now I can't wait to see how they sneak an army of dwarves by the men of Dale (I do not like Girion's letter!!!) and into the Elvenking's domain. Poor Kaimelas! Now, where is Durfinwen? If you have harmed her.... *glares at Le Rouret* wonderful chapter! May your muse find lots of time to write with the elfling in school.

Author's reply

You're starting to make me nervous about Dúrfinwen ... I had no idea you liked her so much. *gulps* Can an author not treat her characters as she pleases?! (Considering how I got cyber-lynched during Pottymouth, obviously not.) I sat under AC Crispin for a writer's workshop at Dragon*Con last year, and one of the many excellent bits of advice she gave us concerns dramatic tension. She said that our characters should, at any time during our narratives, wish to kill us if they came to life and realized we were responsible for their condition. At the moment, I think my characters would happily string me up by my toes and use my navel as target practice. So I think I got Crispin's advice right, at least on that point. Working on Ch. 20! Just remember, things have to go from bad to worse before they get better ...

Naledi · 1 August 2008 · Chapter 17: An Impromptu Council

Thank you for another enthralling chapter. Legolas' last thought here is worrying - if Legolas is losing his belief in a happy resolution then the situation must be bleak indeed. You've really built up the tension, especially with the various dark dreams that Legolas has been having. I like the fact that we don't know yet whether they are warnings, guidance or if they are sent to deceive him. Certainly the dream that the chapter opens with has an evil, menacing feel to it. I hope Legolas is doing the right thing by letting himself be guided by it. Gimli is wonderful here. Trust him to know that Legolas would want him to be discreet about the ring. My heart's in my mouth - please don't keep us waiting too long for the next chapter!

Author's reply

Thank you, Naledi! Don't worry; Gimli will always be there to help Legolas. And as far as the dreams go ... well, we'll just have to see about that, won't we? The next chapter is up. Thanks for reviewing!

Ithilien · 31 July 2008 · Chapter 17: An Impromptu Council

Greetings to you and your wonderful beta! Niri has recommended your stories many times over but in honesty this is the first of them I have read. All the same, once I started reading this fic I became hopelessly hooked; I will confess that I have been impatiently waiting for an update (logging in to this site daily and sometimes twice daily for a couple of weeks now). So I was delighted to see a new chapter here. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I LOVE this story! I wasn't sure at first about the premise of knights and jousting and esquires, valets, pages, and such, especially in Tolkien's world. Those are very medieval qualities, not something of elves I would normally have imagined, but somehow you've made them fit. I think it's the language you pull in that keeps it tight. Most of us give up on the singsong manner of speech Tolkien used in order to keep the quality of the story modern. You keep the phrasing and bend the story to it. I really am liking that approach. And for me, the dark adventure of this story is intriguing. I will confess that pain/comfort scenarios stir me, and Legolas appears to be on the cusp of some black agonies. I can't even imagine what you have in mind for him and his mighty entourage, but it looks to be grim and exciting at the same time. I can almost imagine the snake writhing within, and I will be patient -- promise! -- to learn the realities of that. I wonder too about Thranduil and his situation. Witchery seems to be afoot, and I wonder if some spell has been placed upon him by Renna or Malbeach or both in order that he might be so complacent. There is MUCH to be unveiled and I'm looking forward to more. Thank you for the masterful job you have done in writing this story!

Author's reply

I ... am gobsmacked. Do you realize, Ithilien, that "The Hunting Trip" is the VERY FIRST FANFIC I ever read? And that upon reading it I was inspired to write my own? And that "The Green Knight" grew out of the realization that fanfic was fun, because after all, "The Hunting Trip" was such a great story? In short, do you realize that I owe the birth of The Green Knight universe to you and you alone? Bet you didn't ... bet you have no idea how thrilled, surprised, excited, and - yes - awed that you're reading my story. It's stunning and gratifying that you've taken the time to read it, and that you enjoy it enough to leave such a comprehensive and detailed review. As an aside, "Free to Good Home" is one of my favorite "fanfics." Love the plot bunnies! I think you set a few free in my house, the day I was flipping through pictures and websites about LotR and saw a plug for Ithilien's "The Hunting Trip." They hooked me, and they haven't left me alone since. Thank you, thank you for taking the time to tell me how you like my story. And I'll have to remember to thank Niri for recommending me to you. Happy writing!

Emily · 30 July 2008 · Chapter 17: An Impromptu Council

My computer died, and so I missed the last update before this one. So I got two for the price of one today! Yeeha. But I'm sorry, this is going to be a short review. It's getting late, and I have to be up very early *wince* tomorrow. So. Highlights. The dream. I think there might be hope yet! I was very relieved that there might be a way to slay the serpent. The Dwarves. I liked their comments around Tamin's speech and Legolas's speech. Their entire deportment reminded me of a coworker (a delightfully and wonderfully cranky old man) and myself. The esquire. Still so innocent. Glad to see that. The little father. Gloin is almost as grand as his son. I'm so glad to meet him in person and find where Gimli got his charm. Here's to hoping that Galas decides to chase after his recalcitrant lord...with a very large army.

Author's reply

Yes; Legolas could use Galás right now, couldn't he? A shame he only brought a Hobbit, a young Elf, and a Dwarf with him. But he has his dreams, and Glóin is faithful at least. Thanks for reviewing! The next chapter is up!

Nieriel Raina · 30 July 2008 · Chapter 17: An Impromptu Council

I hate leaving short reviews, but I have no time to go into depth. And you know how much I love this tale! Loved the dwarves and Tamin in this. And Bandy! Gosh, I love that hobbit! But Gimli once again shines here. I am very very worried about Legolas. *bites nails* Don't leave me in suspense too long! *hugs*

Author's reply

Well, at least you get to figure out what happens before everyone else, don't you? *hugs back* Thanks for all your hard work!

CandissD · 30 July 2008 · Chapter 17: An Impromptu Council

I loved this chapter! I love the 2 dwarves Nir and Ibun :D and I am glad Gloin was with them to help sort out this mess. My absolute favorite part was little Tamin's temper tantrum! That little foot stamping about did me in :D I cannot wait to read more and see what happens when they travel east.

Author's reply

Thank you, Candiss! This latest chapter was fun to write. I hope you don't mind going north and not east!

Naledi · 3 July 2008 · Chapter 16: The Green Knight's Esquires

Bandobras was just in time - I was terrified for poor Tamin there. The situation just seems to be getting darker all the time. I do hope we get some answers soon.

Author's reply

Yes, nick-of-time rescues appear to be Bandobras' specialty! Don't worry, answers are forthcoming! Thanks for reviewing.

annajane · 2 July 2008 · Chapter 16: The Green Knight's Esquires

I'm going to post a quick-ish review because it's getting absurd - I've read all of the "Green Knight" stories in recent weeks, at a v. rapid pace, and could write pages and pages about what I like about them, and why. But since I AM supposed to be working and being a mom and buying groceries and what-not, that's not going to happen in the foreseeable future. As I wrote in my initial review of the brilliant "Pottymouth" over at LOTR, I'm late to this party, having only very recently started to look at Lord of the Rings fanfiction. Other commenters here have a deeper knowledge of both the canon (though I have read the books, more than once) and the other fanfic that's out there. And other commenters have already praised large-scale and small-scale aspects of your work that I also like very much. So I don't want to get repetitious at you. But I have to say, this is wonderful work - in ANY genre. You can really, really write, and in the case of these stories you've mastered a difficult style and breathed new life into it. The characters and stories feel immediate and real - quite a feat given the plots you're spinning! I've seen you remark that you like your OC's best, and I do like them very much as well (am in love with Bandobras and fast falling for Tamin). But it is a delight as well to read your beautiful, fractious, tender, fierce Legolas, as well as your Gimli, Faramir, Eowyn. There are tons of terrific little details in every chapter - and each one informs the characters and/or plot. As for this particular story ... well, I'll avoid inserting any emoticons or typing "OMG!!!!" over and over again like your 21st-century Lottie. But it is seriously doing me in. I've become terribly spoiled, reading one of your stories after another in the full knowledge that the last chapter has long since been posted. Now I'm caught up and trapped as surely as one of Shelob's victims. It's agony not to know what's coming next, and yet there's a certain pleasure mixed with the pain. NB you've written some of the hottest and most delightful bedroom (and everywhere else room) scenes I've ever read, and now, in the preceding chapter, you've written one of the absolute ickiest. Ugh! You've got some serious range. Shears and magical hair - hmm. Oropher's ring. Bad water. A torture chamber. Strange dwarves to the rescue. And surely Faramir and even Aragorn not TOO far behind? But I can't see how this is going to get sorted; I just have to trust you to do so! OK, I have so little time that I am going on and on. Please forgive, and please keep writing and writing and writing! And thank Nieriel Raina for me, because she's clearly doing fantastic work too. P.S. Everything I wrote about "Pottymouth" still stands, though I keep planning to write a more detailed review for you about that story and its sequel. Although I know the series are unrelated, it's interesting how many aspects of Legolas the Green Knight appear as well in Legolas the Elven Ass. You've really got him figured out.

Author's reply

WOW. That was such a detailed and well-thought out review that I have to sort of sit here and drink it in. Wait, no; then I'll get a big head, and that's a terrible thing to do to a fanfic writer. Thank you, THANK YOU for your positive and encouraging words! I take tentative pride in my work, and I'm pleased that my offerings are being read and appreciated. I'm sorry it's taking me such a long time to update this particular fic. I know how spoiled one can get, reading through completed works, and running headlong into a WIP can really set one back. But I promise you, like I've promised all the other "OMG UPDATE SOON!" reviewers, that this fic WILL get finished, and strangely enough, more plot bunnies are nibbling on my ankles, promising further Pottymouth and Green Knight fun. Again, thank you for your review! You've really made my day.

CandissD · 2 July 2008 · Chapter 16: The Green Knight's Esquires

Ah this story gets better and more mysterious with every chapter! :) I am glad Tamin, Bandy and the horses are ok after all of that. Now to find Legolas and the others! :D Can't wait for more!

Author's reply

Thank you, Candiss! I just updated, so have fun!

Dreamflower · 2 July 2008 · Chapter 16: The Green Knight's Esquires

There now! I *knew* Bandobras would come to the rescue!! *grin* I just loved seeing him in action and saving Tamin with only the help of a couple of strange Dwarves. The mystery you are weaving about the Master and his doings is getting deeper and murkier than ever! It's clear he's somehow enspelled the entire region, and has either chased off any Men of good will or managed by some sorcery to corrupt them all. And though some of what the "yellow-haired girl" feared was obvious, some of her other fears were far more cryptic. This is one cracking good thriller/adventure, you know! I think it's probably your best story so far!

Author's reply

Thank you, Dreamflower! I'm glad I seem to be keeping everyone on tenterhooks. This may not be, as you so kindly suggested, my best story so far, but it is certainly the most convoluted, and a real challenge to write. I'm so pleased you're enjoying it. Thanks for the review!
