Elemmírë · 20 December 2006 · Chapter 77: The Northern Lights
Ahh, that's the one dissapointment I had on my cruise to Alaska this past September. Every night was a cloudy one where we were sailing, so I was unable to catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis, aka the Northern Lights. I'm glad to be able to witness it here with my favorite hobbits, however :D ~Elemmírë~
Author's reply
Oooh, an Alaskan cruise, how exciting! Maybe someday you will go back and see the Northern Lights. I live in a big city, so there is no hope in seeing them here. But I hope I will have the opportunity someday! Thanks for reading, Elemmírë. I'm so glad you enjoyed :)
Lindelea · 20 December 2006 · Chapter 77: The Northern Lights
I too will not forget my sight of the Northern Lights. They were like shimmering transluscent curtains of palest green, blue, and violet. We could even *hear* them crackle in the stillness of the wilderness night sky. Amazing. Definitely worth waking up young hobbits for!
Author's reply
What a lovely sight! I hope to see it someday, in person rather than trying to find good images online! I'm very glad you enjoyed this - thank you so much!
Pearl Took · 20 December 2006 · Chapter 77: The Northern Lights
I've seen the Northern Lights - they are a wonder indeed! Well worth waking young hobbits up to see :-) Well Done, ST!

harrowcat · 20 December 2006 · Chapter 77: The Northern Lights
Now that is something I really would like to see myself. Worth getting up for, both for the hobbits and for me to get up and read this morning.

Aw, thanks so much, harrowcat! I appreciate it! :D
Larner · 19 December 2006 · Chapter 77: The Northern Lights
I've only seen the Northern Lights maybe twice in my life, and both times it was awe-inspiring indeed. Lovely that Bilbo and Frodo are doing their best to make certain that Merry and Pippin get to see them, too.
Author's reply
Thanks, Larner! I've never seen the Northern Lights in person but it is something I hope to do someday. I love writing about young hobbits learning from older ones, and I thought this was the perfect opportunity. Glad you enjoyed :)

Loved both of these ST. Sorry that it has taken so llong to review. Am sitting here with my lavendar candle burning in sympathy.

Bodkin · 15 December 2006 · Chapter 76: Baking Day
What better way to keep little Pippin out of the way! And ... peppermint candles - that sounds good!
Author's reply
Thanks, Bodkin! I got the idea for the peppermint candles from Gryffinjack, who originally suggested I use them in another story. They didn't work there, but fit in well with this scene. I'm glad you enjoyed! :)
Elemmírë · 13 December 2006 · Chapter 76: Baking Day
Yum!! How very sweet, Slightly Tookish! I can just smell the tantalizing aroma of freshly baked cookies emanating from Bilbo's cozy kitchen. Just as it's tradition in the Shire, my mother always makes a ton of Christmas cookies at this time of year. She's always baking something ... and my job is to decorate them, as I'm her official cookie decorator even now as an adult. Wee Pippin must feel very special indeed to have been asked by Bilbo to help with the Yule baking. I was beginning to wonder where Frodo and Merry were. How very smart of them to request that Bilbo keep Pippin occupied so as to wrap his Yule gifts. I bet they were wrapping Bilbo's too! LOL! I hope you have a nice holiday! ~Elemmírë~
Author's reply
Thanks very much, Elemmírë for your comments and also for sharing your own happy memories! I also was my mom's official cookie decorator and have many happy memories of that. Baking seems like such a hobbity activity, and I would imagine that the children are involved at a young age too :) I definitely think Frodo and Merry were wrapping Bilbo's gifts too, but they wouldn't tell a known sneak and burglar that! LOL! I hope you have a wonderful holiday as well! :)

Still another wonderful look at what that first meeting between the two close cousins might have been like. Yes, a marvelous meeting between Merry and Pippin, once Pippin decided to remain.

Larner · 21 November 2006 · Chapter 73: All in the Research
Oh, yes--they'd ONLY go that way to make certain the Golden Perch is up to Frodo's standards, once he removes to Buckland.... Heh!
Author's reply
Oh dear! I just discovered this comment today. Sorry to be so late but thanks very much Larner - I do appreciate it! :) And yes, of course Merry and Pippin would ONLY go that way for Frodo's sake. What other reason could they have? ;)

Antane · 11 November 2006 · Chapter 73: All in the Research
I do a lot of things 'for research purposes' too. :) Drinking is not one of them, but this is a cute story. Namarie, God bless, Antane :)
Author's reply
I don't drink at all, so I can't say that I relate to that sort of research! But the main point I wanted to express was how much Merry and Pippin wanted to help Frodo in any way they could, and if that included keeping him well-fed, well-rested and comfortable for as long as possible, they wanted to be ready for that. Thanks for reading!
harrowcat · 11 November 2006 · Chapter 73: All in the Research
Research and preparation - very definitely Merry traits. And flexible too. Loved the bit about being ready to walk long distances. Just as well that they didn't really know.
Author's reply
Thanks, harrowcat! Merry really thought through the Conspiracy and his preparations that I figured he must have taken into account that the journey would be a physically difficult one. You are right - it's best he didn't realize what really lay ahead.
Elemmírë · 9 November 2006 · Chapter 73: All in the Research
ROTFL!!!! I can soooo see Merry and Pippin engaging themselves in this sort of "research" ... all for Frodo, of course. *snort*
Author's reply
They would do anything for their cousin...which of course would include knowing where Frodo could find food, drink and rest :)
Andrea · 9 November 2006 · Chapter 73: All in the Research
So, they took exercise before they went with Frodo? That was definitely Merry's idea, wasn't it? But a very good idea, I must say. "Frodo might want something to eat or drink, or a bit of rest, along the way. I think we ought to investigate every inn between Bag End and Crickhollow, so we’ll be prepared.” It's very much like Pippin to combine practice with fun! Although, it didn't take him long to convince Merry as well - only for research, of course ;-)
Author's reply
I think it's very plausible that Merry and Pippin would have made every effort to be as prepared as possible. They would have wanted to prove to Frodo that they could keep up and be useful or else they would have been a liability. What I really wanted to show here was that Merry and Pippin were serious about accompanying Frodo on the Quest and would do anything to help him. Thanks for reading, Andrea! :)
