Petal  by Armariel 90 Review(s)

Ah, the poor lad! I hope she will come to him and tell him all will be alright or some sort of sign. Indeed a heavy, heavy loss.

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: Stay tuned:) Yes, quite a loss...and as his guardian angel she has her work cut out for her. Thanks for commenting!

Quite a difference between the mortals and the fairy-folk, the use of thanks. And I love the idea of her suggesting painting a streak of gold in this unnamed Hobbit's hair, for some reason.

Author Reply: I came across that tidbit while researching fairy lore yesterday, and it inspired me. And perhaps painting the gold streak will help Butternut overcome his pique in a more creative and constructive way than tying elf-locks!

Thanks so much for your input, Larner!

And how true THAT proved! And she will grow hair upon her feet if it pleases him and he wishes it? She must be very smitten with him indeed!

Author Reply: Somehow I think he will not wish it. I dare say she'll feel obligated to suppress certain of her Fairy characteristics, in order to fit in with his people, but I'm thinking he'll like her feet as they are. What his mother thinks, on the other hand, might be a whole 'nother matter...............

What a perfect means of describing herself in relation to him, and their relationship with one another! And the wondering Took would capture her attention--and heart.

Author Reply: I'm thinking the Tooks are a sort of "chosen people"...and Petal is the one who will instill that specialness that will eventually give rise to a Bilbo, a Frodo, a Merry and a Pippin, the incipient saviors of Middle Earth. That specialness which will prove an inspiration to Sam and others, as well. I'm thinking that, as Vervain points out, most hobbits were pretty much dull before Petal came along, and she was responsible for making them what they would eventually become--lengendary.

And this was how she took a Took as her own love? And with a rose?

Author Reply: Well, roses are traditionally a symbol of love:) And so adorning herself thusly would be a logical step in the direction of capturing the heart of said Took...but only a step. There's more to it, to be sure;)

What a thought, to consider these images of the flowers she loves tattoos, and this one that reflects the blue of this special child's eyes a "mortal tattoo"! Delightful!

Author Reply: I'm guessing she thinks of Frodo as one destined for great things, a sort of spiritual son perhaps. Wearing flowers the color of his eyes is a special way of celebrating that connection. So glad it works for you!

I rejoice she sought to protect her own, and particularly saw Frodo as one of her charges. Is she related, do you think, to Anemone?

Author Reply: In the Armariel-verse, both fairies and waterfolk are a sort of Maiar, but they have different creators. Ulmo, of course, made the water people, including Goldberry, Nimrodel, and yes, Anemone. But fairies were made by Irmo, of whom Tolkien tells us his gardens were "filled with many spirits." Those spirits being what we would term Fairies.

So Petal and Anemone are similar, yet different. I'm thinking fairies are less attracted to mortals than are seafolk, which are greatly drawn to them in folklore, at least, usually to their detriment. Petal is a notable exception. I'm thinking she might be a sort of Eternal Feminine...yes, I guess I'm a bit hung up on the idea, but what the heck. We'll just see where it goes!

Thanks much for commenting Larner!

Oh, how wonderful to think that Frodo did indeed see a fairy dance--an ancestor to himself, Merry, and Pippin all three! Lovely! I'd forgotten that detail, but am glad you fleshed it out here.

Author Reply: Maybe it was in "Bear Me Away," come to think of it--I don't remember exactly, but he does definitely mention a fairy dancing on his lawn. I wasn't sure who she was then, myself. But now we know!:D

She does sound very beautiful, and the perfect one to capture the attention of a Took....

Author Reply: Greetings Larner and thanks! Glad you've decided to check this one out. I've had Petal in my head for nearly a year now; I originally conceived of her as a changeling, but scrapped that idea, deciding it wouldn't work. Then thought to write the story of her life with the Took. (It's been done before, I'm sure) And now you see what's come of it! Wasn't sure I could make a drabble-series about an OC work either, but decided to take a crack at it anyway. It was something different, at least! Writing 100-word vignettes takes some doing, but it's fun and challenging, and I thank you for inspiring me to do so;)
