A Fire Long Kindled  by Nilmandra 57 Review(s)
Eruanneth_LuinReviewed Chapter: 1 on 12/13/2005
Oh, what an absolutely perfect gifting for those of us so honored with your dedication. This tale is evocative, tender and a lovely example of the effectiveness of understatement in provoking the senses. Blue and I both enjoyed the restrained, yet obviously passionate, attraction between Elrond and Celebrían. You would have enjoyed Blue’s varied facial expressions and outright laughter.

Trust Glorfindel to bring to light the heart of the matter in such a subtle, yet piercing manner, allowing Elrond to ‘see’ the solution. Celeborn as chaperone is priceless and delightful. Celebrían stating that her Adar found grass growing a more stimulating pastime was so funny I laughed out loud. The idea that the fire between them was so intense that they looked for ‘burn marks’ on one another certainly suggested that elves are not without passion nor immune to physical arousal.

Celebrían commenting that Elrond might have discovered the hiding place of her ring for him was pleasantly risqué. I am glad to see that Celebrían is not a shy demure maiden, but one definitely equal to the loving of a powerful Elf-lord. But then one only has to look at her parents to understand her complimentary attributes when combined with the unusual heredity of her betrothed. Yes, it is clear to all that she will not hesitate to take the initiative in their relationship. Glorfindel’s whispered ‘impatient old elves’ had me giggling like an elfling.

We await with eager anticipation the posting of the next chapter.

Author Reply: I hope that you enjoy what I have tried to make a passionate and amusing tale of their love. I enjoyed imagining what Celebrian might have been like - surely to catch the eye and heart of a powerful elf lord she was something special. Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary!

After a whole century Glorfindel still had Elrond to nudge into the right direction? Well, I can understand he was unsure if it is right to bind himself to Celebrían after all his losses. Still, it's about time.

It's funny to have chaperones watching them because they are no elflings any longer! But I love it, particluarly as long Celeborn is the chaperone, that was fun. I have to admit, I would've been terribly intimidated to have Celeborn and Galadriel as my parents-in-law! It's good Celebrían knows her Adar so well and doesn't take him too seriously.

Their betrothal was wonderful, and of course the tender interlude before and their realization they *were* chaperoned :) It's intriguing how long this was prepared if they had even Círdan's blessing. Somehow I have the feeling Glorfindel and the others have conspired to get them married!

Author Reply: I like to think that Elrond, whilehe may have been bereft of near kin, had a number of dear friends who loved him and looked out for him. This look is not entirely serious, but then, elves were supposed to be joyful mirth loving creatures, right? LOL, well, this is the best I can do! I am glad you like it so far.

I like the way this is turning out. It's interesting to see these two with elven control of their bodies, yet feeling deeper desire as they admit their love and move toward marriage.

Author Reply: I think elven control of the body can be used for restraint... and for great passion. Of course, the best I can do is imagine this... which I have greatly enjoyed. :D

Elrond is so formal and proper, and Celebrian seems like just the right sort of person to bring out his playful side. You already know that she has him wrapped around her little finger (as well as other portions of her anatomy). And she has a fair amount of self-possession, to be able to court Elrond as saucily as she does knowing that her parents are chaperoning her.

But it looks like Elrond is capable of holding his own, as his proposal proves, even though by the end, he gets outmaneuvered by every important person in his life. As well he should be.

Author Reply: I like this Celebrian (good, since I sort of created her, but she really has developed in my mind over time)... she is self-possessed and that works when one considers she is the child of Galadriel and Celeborn. And she is good for Elrond.

LOL at out-maneuvered Elrond. Yes he was. And it as it should be. They might have to nudge him occasionally, but they love him. :D

Sweet and romantic. Lovely.

Author Reply: Thank you. It does heat up a bit in the chapters to come :)

I love the thought of Glorfindel being able to make Elrond want to squirm like an elfling. And also that Elrond is disciplined enough to be able to resist the compulsion.

And doesn't Glorfindel know and understand Elrond well! He is so right - Elrond finds it easier to give than receive - and letting someone in far enough to hurt him is frightening for one who has been left so often. And he will bask in the sun, leaving Elrond to bask in something different. Celebrian has been very patient. And tolerant. (I would think that, had she known it had taken Glorfindel to point out the obvious, she might have wanted to land a small fist somewhere - before being thankful that something had stimulated Elrond to take action.)

Chaperoned! Do chaperones only come out when 'courting' is acknowledged? So non-courting elves can be alone? It must contribute to the squirming-elfling in Elrond - except that these chaperones are so clearly in favour of the match. Even Celeborn. Mind you, he's had long enough to get used to the idea. Probably beginning to think that Elrond would never get off his ... chair and start the courting. And they're all conspiring against Elrond - for his own good!

The betrothal - hot, Nilmandra! And yet controlled and loving .... and observed. Back to the squirming! I love the try for an abbreviated betrothal. And that Elrond had had family consent for a century - and that Glorfindel had it tucked away ready. Celeborn and Celebrian's relationship is delightful - and she can twist him round her little finger. I think Arwen can probably do the same in the years to come, too. As well as with her Adar.

And Noldor, Teleri and Vanyar blessings on them.

I think they might need the chaperones over the next year though. Despite their self-control.

Author Reply: It is interesting to try to write the Eldar, knowing that they are so long lived that some of these customs or ideas must seem ludicrous! The whole thought of chaperones is hilarious, but I couldn't resist. I imagine that its hard to get much alone time in Imladris unless one is in their own chambers, due to living in a community house, so likely everyone is 'chaperoned' all the time unless they take steps to avoid it. Poor Elrond... and Celeborn enjoyed it. And I enjoyed Glorfindel and Celeborn scheming together, though I'm sure Galadriel might have liked to knock their heads together.

Celeborn and Celebrian's relationship is delightful - and she can twist him round her little finger. I think Arwen can probably do the same in the years to come, too. As well as with her Adar.

Definitely true... Arwen learns from a master. She has merely to observe her mother wrapping both husband and father around her finger to know how its done. :D

That was so cute! I love the interaction between Celebrian and Elrond. They have such distinct personalities that it's fun to watch them bounce off each other a little. On the other hand, I don't know who would be scarier to have viewing a courtship. Celeborn or Glorfindel. For Elrond, I'm sure it's Celeborn. But I like how you show that Celeborn is willing to let Celebrian marry yet he is still protective of her. Elrond can sure get flustered. It's a great story and I look forward to the next chapter. ^_^

Author Reply: I think Celebrian did have her father well wrapped around her little finger (at least in my world)! This was fun to write - Elrond has all these powerful Eldar watching over his shoulder, and yet they were hardly hormonal teenagers in need of a chaperone. There is some silliness in this story, but it s all in good fun. Nice to hear from you!
