The River  by Indigo Bunting 22 Review(s)
French PonyReviewed Chapter: 9 on 11/17/2005
I was beginning to wonder at the overconfidence of the Men who would tie Sam and Legolas together instead of separating them. But it did allow Sam to pass on those crucial bits of information, and any weakness that the Men might show is useful at this point.

Legolas seems to have passed beyond courage into the land of Nothing Left To Lose. This is going to make him a supremely dangerous foe tomorrow morning (assuming he isn't too stiff to move). But Sam's stubborn loyalty is just as strong, and he'll have a hard time leaving through any hole in the wall that Legolas might create.

Seems that Dorlic has a History with Elves. It'll be interesting to find out what that is.

Author Reply: This chapter actually underwent a major revision when I realized that I had done things out of order. At first Garan let into Sam as soon as camp was set, and then tied him back together with Legolas, but then I changed my mind and let Garan take Dorlic’s advice (to keep them separated). Garan still thinks he’s got them twined around his little finger, but he wouldn’t tempt fate, not when Legolas is as angry as Dorlic says. He doesn’t care if Sam and Legolas talk before he strikes Sam because he thinks that all they have to talk about is escaping, which he doesn’t think they can manage. He doesn’t know that Sam overheard him talking to Dorlic about Saruman and his interest in orcs; if he did, he would never have let Sam and Legolas speak to each other again, because you’re right – the news really has pushed Legolas to a dangerous point.

*shudders*

What a horrible fate for Legolas to have to comtemplate! And wonderful, loyal Sam trying to make sure they both get free.

Another wonderful chapter, although an evil cliffhanger!

Author Reply: Thanks, SurgicalSteel. A cliffhanger, yes, but things are coming to a point now. Not much longer at all before the storm breaks.
