The River  by Indigo Bunting 13 Review(s)

I always love when things are shown from Gandalf's POV, as JRRT hardly ever let us inside his head--only once, I think, when Frodo wakes at Rivendell. The decisions he must make now are truly wrenching.

I am very intrigued by these Men--who are they? who sent them? It's quite clear they *will* be coming across Legolas and Sam at some point in time.

And I hope we get *back* to Legolas and Sam in the next chapter, pretty please.

Author Reply: Oh, if you only knew how difficult it was for me to get inside Gandalf’s head! This story was stalled for fully three months while I tried to write chapter 5. I ended up writing large chunks of later chapters because I barely made any progress on the task at hand. Gandalf was a VERY tough nut to crack, and it’s a relief to have his chapter done. He’s not slated to have another.

You know how fanfiction works, all right. :-) And chapter 6 is from Sam’s POV.

"Gandalf was not finding it easy to concentrate. The moment he finally had his cloak better positioned, his back began to irritate him. He stood up and walked a few paces to stretch it out, only to be reminded that his feet were tired. He sat down on the boulder again, found it uncomfortable, and was forced to maneuver about to locate the flat, smooth seat he had labored to find the first time."

I really enjoyed your description of Gandalf's many discomforts. Not only was it very realistic, (you must have spent some time camping), but it put me firmly inside Gandalf's head. I also liked the fact that although Gimli didn't hide his hostility toward Legolas he wished no ill fate on him either. Through the whole chappter you maintained the feeling of uncertainty and muted distress. The Men seem an even greater threat now. This is a very engaging tale. I can't wait for your next chapter! ~TF

Author Reply: Thanks, Tithen! I’m glad that someone really noticed that paragraph. I was trying to fully convey Gandalf’s restlessness in this chapter – not just in his mind, but in his body, too. Yes, I have spent lots of time camping! Boulders aren’t much fun to sit on. The moment you move, you lose whatever comfortable seat you managed to find to begin with. The backdrop for this story – namely, the gorge and the river – is taken from my own memories of hiking and climbing in such places.

Deliciously exciting!

This premature breaking of the Fellowship is so wrenching, but something that they were always likely to face at some point. I like seeing them being brave about possibly losing their relatives and friends, not to mention valued members of the Fellowship.

Author Reply: Thank you, Amy, and welcome! I think it’s easier for everyone to be brave about the possibility of losing their friends now when they still have some time to search. If Gandalf decided that time was up… well, that would be truly hard to bear.
