All Those Who Wander  by daw the minstrel 25 Review(s)

Oh, heck. Nimloth's not going? And Thranduil says 'We can manage'? Is this a case of famous last words?

And Maltanaur. He's not conscious yet? How long has it been? No wonder Eilian is in such a state.

I'm afraid there are times I want to slap Thranduil for his blindness when it comes to his middle son. “Do not be impertinent,” Thranduil snapped. Not 'Thank you for agreeing to stay home tonight; for reading to Legolas; for getting him to read again on his own.' No, just 'Do not be impertinent'. Poor Eilian.

Author Reply: Thranduil hasn't been a single parent for very long. He may be overestimating the amount of control he has over any of his sons! I think sometimes bad relations between family become a habit almost. People want to be different but there's all that weight of history pushing against their efforts to change.

It's wonderful to see a new story here DAW! I have missed your tales all summer.
Orc spit not withstanding, I don't think Ithilden has enough guards to go on this trip with Eilian and Legolas. With no Nimloth to pack and take care of Legolas, I have a feeling that the blankie is going to get left behind or someone forgets to pack enough tunics and pants for a small boy who will be into everything in the forest. And no Malanthar to make sure that Eilian doesn't get into the trouble that he always finds.
Eilian will certainly look after his brother, as he and Legolas are closer than Ithilden and Legolas. But even one small elfling is going to give Eilian a new perspective on what he does to Malanthar. And even Thranduil is going to be challenged with thinking up ways to say no before Legolas can think to answer the questions.
Even though you are headed to some scary moments here, I can also see some very funny events happening. Maybe it would be better if the village leaders came to Thranduil's fortress rather than the group head out to meet the village leaders?

Author Reply: I missed writing about these characters all summer! I spent the time converting "Growing Under Shadow" into an original young adult fantasy novel that I'm now trying to convince some agent to take on. That was fun, but I did miss this family a whole lot.

Thranduil is still learning to be a single father, so he may not quite realize how much he's taken on here.

Maybe it would be better if the village leaders came to Thranduil's fortress rather than the group head out to meet the village leaders?

Good point! Thranduil will take it under consideration for the future.

Oh dear! Without Nimloth, this is going to be a disaster! But first things first--you are mean dribbling out what happened to Maltanaur! I love Eilian's connection to the forest as you show it in a lot of parts of this--but his reactions around Maltanaur and his wife are driving me crazy with curiosity!

And I liked see a bit of tension between Thranduil and Ithilden--it is unusual between them and it was fun. They are both still searching for a way to deal with things so the tension seemed very realistic. It is also fun to see someone spar a bit with Thranduil and basically get away with it in addition to actually holding their own. ;-)

Legolas and that pony! Poor Thranduil. But Eilian was very sweet to agree to stay--not all older brothers would have the patience.

I loved the flashback to Eilian first spider hunt. Poor Lorellin. And it was particularly good contrasted with Thranduil and Eilian--it makes you really see why Eilian would be so lost after the death of his mother--she really was the one member of the family that understood him other than a young child. I think that is why I love Eilian so much. He is a very complex character.

Great chapter--I'm almost afraid to see how badly lost a small child with only males to watch him is going to be. *Shakes head.* :-)

Author Reply: I originally intended this story to be all about Legolas, but then I saw how I could tell parts of Eilian's story that I've only hinted at in the past -- how did he come to such good terms with Maltanaur, how did he act when he first came of age and Ithilden wound up deciding to send him south, what was Naneth like with him. When I started to work with it, I could see that the flashbacks might get confusing so I hesitated, but then I decided what the heck. I want to tell this story so I might as well.

Ithilden is as close to a confidante as Thranduil has, I think. They understand one another pretty well and Thranduil does let him say things he'd never accept from Eilian. But then Ithilden is 600 years older and has proved himself pretty well.

Horrors. I said ;) when I meant :( . Methinks I need typing lessons.

Author Reply: LOL. I knew that was what you meant. I didn't think you were so cruel!

Uh, oh.

Males of any culture are constitutionally incapable of keeping track of small children, IMHO. When my son was at the stage that Legolas is at now, his father lost him in a shopping mall for fifteen terrifying minutes. The presence of additional male family members would not have prevented this. And Mirkwood is no shopping mall!

"For a wistful moment, Thranduil considered trying to get Eilian to confide in him, but he knew the effort would be pointless. He and Eilian had never understood one another. They had always relied on Lorellin to help them grope their way toward truce, and now she was gone and they had lost their way."

So sad. ;) Eilian is still so young and so alone.

Author Reply: Holy cow. I would have had to damage my husband if he did that. It's true though that kids are slippery. They just don't think and they kind of dart away. And Thranduil is still learning what it means to be a single father.

I felt really sorry for Thranduil in that passage. He loves his son and wants to be close to him, but they just can't do it. And you're right that Eilian is still really young, only 70.
