History Lessons: The Third Age  by Nilmandra 22 Review(s)

Marvelous chapter. You do a beautiful job opening to us Elrond's heart and mind as he chose (and allowed to be chosen) Frodo's Fellowship. I especially love these two passages:

“I will not be leaving your side until the fate of the One is known,” explained Glorfindel. “As long as it is in Imladris it is a temptation to any who know of its existence. If Frodo fails in his Quest and the One falls into the hands of one able to wield it, Vilya places you at risk.”

And...

“Aragorn restores what has been lost in this age, a rebirth of the dignity and glory of Númenor,” he said softly.

Elrond nodded. “That rebirth cannot be a gift this time; Men must earn it. Aragorn must earn it, for with it comes the whole of Middle-earth. Only a victory hard won will steer Men long into the future on the path of good.”

Author Reply: I really got to thinking about Men in this chapter - about how Tolkien saw their strengths and abilities compared to the elves - the freedom and the gift - and what role Aragorn played and what he and Arwen would bring to the future. I am glad you liked it (since Nothing Happened!).

Woot! I'll leave a better review in the morning after I have time to enjoy and digest...

Author Reply: LOL, I'm just hoping I didn't put you to sleep with it! It took me a lot of words to write how Absolutely Nothig Happened. :/
