Far Horizons  by Bodkin 178 Review(s)

Another good chapter - the plans are coming on well. Poor Elrohir - even as he protested the work he'd have to do, he proved how good he'd be. I loved his reaction when Elladan tried to wriggle out of it. I sympathise though - I think they'd be far better suited to an active role in the exploration than organising and planing. I like the way both wives know how they would fret if left behind.

Author Reply: Poor Elrohir indeed - but you can't spend all your immortal life chasing orcs, especially not there aren't any! I don't think Elladan will be able to get out of the boring side of this altogether, but I'm sure they'll be able see some action. Their wives want to keep them happy, and are prepared to let them go off and play.

(The whole tale is getting a bit complicated, with a cast of thousands. I'm starting to panic.)

I love these stories and was happy to see another part. I can't help it though, I like Thranduil and see his point. Galadriel is a hypocrite. She is "pretending" to sit back while runnning the show. Thranduil would have had more respect (if still been annoyed) if she had taken part. In trying to placate him, she has insulted his intelligence.

Why didn't the others understand why Thranduil took Galadriel saying he was like her brother as an insult when she flat out said, she meant it as an insult.

Sirinthiel was great. I loved that she called Galadriel on questing whether or not she trusted her grandsons and Legolas.

Celeborn is great. He has come into his own.

Can't wait for the next part. I hope it has my favorite Mirtwood Elves in it.

Thanks

Jule

Author Reply: Do I get the feeling that you are not among Galadriel's fans? Galadriel isn't exactly running the show - not with elves like Celeborn, Thranduil and Elrond around. Negotiation would be the order of the day, I'm afraid.

I know saying that someone is like your brother can be a bit of an insult, but brothers aren't usually that bad!

I'm hoping that Galadriel and Thranduil manage to come to a bit of an accommodation - but it won't be easy, they're both rather dogmatic, proud and bossy.

I rather like the twins' wives (although they're invented and Not Canon).

And Celeborn is great - he understands Galadriel (as she does him) and they can cope with each other. After x thousand years, you would hope that would be the case.

The Mirkwood elves are appearing - but the cast of characters is spiralling rather.

Thank you for reading.

Oh, Glorfindel! 'we can always make up the records later' - spoken like a true 'get the job done' kind of elf!

This looks to be a great expedition - and its good to give a Balrog slayer a bit of excitement in his life. Annoying techincal specialists are always amusing :D

Author Reply: Records - who needs 'em! The best ones are always fudged later - when things are happening, who has time to write them down!

Glorfindel is quite excited by the opportunity - and very happy he has not got stuck behind organising things. It would be the technical specialists making difficulties - too keen to show of their expertise.

Omigod, you work with either engineers or computer folks, don't you? I laughed when I got to the part about how it would be the technical specialists who caused problems. Ain't that the truth!

Author Reply: I don't actually - but they are just the sort of people . . . (massive generalisation, any personal intention denied!!)

But it would be them, wouldn't it?

Oh, I do like this! It's nice to see Thranduil, Elrond and Celeborn trying to agree on anything :) It must have been a bit like this during the White Council meetings, except that I bet Galadriel didn't have the patience to sit them out for the sake of unity. You're absolutely right - they have to have something to do now, and it's going to take years (if ever) of working together before they forget their differences. You're making me very curious though, as to what did happen to Thranduil's wife!

It's getting embarrassing - this business of me asking if I can put everything you write on my website, but I must do it again, as this it such a great series. Do make it a long story if you can - I'd love to know what happens next. And can I please put this on the website?

Author Reply: Yes, of course you can put it on your website - although I can make no guarantees about how long or interesting it will turn out. This is probably the first thing I'm trying where I can't hold the whole thing in my head in one go, and that could spell disaster.

I don't know how long Galadriel will be able to keep her temper - and Mrs. Thranduil might well feature in some way. Afraid I'm still rather woolly over some of the threads.

Oh, the elven lords can still snipe at each other! Go Glorfindel! He is free and unattached and can go off on adventures. I want to go with. I am sure I could add soem value.

This is exciting to think about, with the elves of middle-earth, long wearied and in need of healing, to find their own place in the Undying Lands.

I like your Celeborn and Galadriel more and more, too.

Author Reply: I'm sure you could add value to Glorfindel's trip, too. He's feeling very smug at being the one to get to go and have fun. They could do with taking some ellyth.

I have trouble with the idea of Valinor - all these elves turning up - what do they do? Where do they go? Who feeds them? Houses them? Where does the food come from? It's like 'happy ever after'. There must be something that comes next.

The Middle Earth elves just wouldn't be happy, would they? Especially the likes of Thranduil, Celeborn and Galadriel. Elrond, Celebrian and Glorfindel might be more accommodating. They need their own place.

I like C and G - I think they must be an amazing love story after all those millennia.

Thank you for your kind words. I'll try to keep it going then.

Oh yes, the beginning of a long fic. Lovely scene setting in this one, a bit of tension and a bit of romance and intrigue. Goody goody.
Bring it on.

PS: Your writing just gets better and better. Not a wasted word I love it.

Author Reply: Note the disbelieving blushes.

I hope this will work out - it's all a bit foggy a little further down the line. (Plotting not my forte.) But they've all been saying they want to go!

This was intriguing. As you might expect, I particularly enjoyed the characterization of Thranduil. He'd rather act than sit around planning? No! Who could have guessed? :-)

Celeborn the Wise comes across nicely too. He handled everything very well.

Author Reply: Intriguing? Thranduil's not one to go for consensus, is he? Council meetings are probably marginally more tolerable if you can put your foot down. (Though only marginally.) Good for Celeborn - an elf with enough nerve to hold this together.

I quite want to develop this and take the wagon train west - but I'm not sure if I can hack the sustained story telling. (Too much organisation and memory required.)
