Well, this was painful to read the third time around too! Poor Sinnarn! Have I said that enough? Can you write faster, so that the truth can be foudn out? PoI felt his pain - this was gut wrenching to read :S

Author Reply: It was painful to write! I was so depressed about halfway through that I just wanted to go to bed and stay there. Just remember: Emmelin loves him and doesn't care!

I hope poor Sinnarn gets a chance to do something heroic before the story is over just to move him up a little in everyone's eyes. Course, on the other hand, people who are as desperately disappointed in themselves as Sinnarn must be tend to make poor decisions. Probably best to keep him out of harms way.

Author Reply: It does seem as if someone in Sinnarn's situation might be looking for a chance to prove themselves, doesn't it? And Mirkwood is still a dangerous place. That could cause problems.

Thank you so much for being extra fast with this. We were all dying. This is perfect too. Sinnarn needed a serious punishment. The military can not play around with this type of mistake. People's lives depend on you. Even one cup was too much. So the punishment is appropriate. But it is also wicked. To be lower than Tinár is seriously humiliating. On the other hand, Sinnarn's family needs to support him and help him learn. And that is what they did. Thranduil was perfect, I think. And so was Emmelin. She seems like her father's daughter. A very sweet girl and loyal to Sinnarn like her father was to Legolas. Loved this chapter. I don't think there is anything you could change to make it more perfect.

Author Reply: Yes, that's what I thought too. His officers really had to treat this seriously. Being drunk on duty could cause serious problems. Well, actually of course, it did! The prisoners escaped.

Tinar would be the worst part of this, wouldn't he? What a jerk. Thank goodness Sinnarn's family made it clear that they loved him, even though they were horrified. But Emmelin, the sweetie, didn't even take the time to tell him he'd done wrong. She didn't care. She loved him anyway. Thank god. By the time I got to writing that part of the chapter, I was as glad to see her as Sinnarn was. I like your observation that she's like Annael. That seems true to me.

Thank you for your kind words.

Aww! Now I feel even more sorry for poor Sinnarn! Nobody believes that he only had one cup! I'm so glad Emmelin doesn't care about what happened! Now we know that she probably actually does love him! I thought it was good of Thranduil to say that to Sinnarn. It made him feel worse...but then he felt better afterwards. I feel sorry for Calith too, having to deal with Tinar all day. That poor, poor soul. Well, I loved this, update asap!

Author Reply: I feel bad for him too. My beta's main comment on this chapter was "poor Sinnarn!" Emmelin's unconditional love must be a great comfort to him. His whole family made it clear they loved him, I think. They just couldn't stop the sky from falling on him. And yes, Tinar would be the worst part.

Discipline is always best meted out when one is suffering from a hangover. Everything is 10 times worse. I guess it is one ailment that the elves suffer from just like mortals. Poor Sinnarn - the old "I'm very disappointed in you" routine is always worse than a cursing fit. I am sure both his parents are disappointed in him.

Amdir was indeed a good friend to accompany Sinnarn into the office. It would have been easier to turn around or sit somewhere else. I know the young elf appreciated it. Legolas tried to stand up for him but there was really no way to defend the elf's actions. Poor Sinnarn. You are truly evil when it comes to dishing out punishment. Being forced to serve as a lowly courier is humiliating. Having to face his father on a daily basis and be reminded of his mistake is terrible. But by far the worst thing is having to see Tinar on a regular basis. How cruel can you be?!

Thranduil handled the young one well. Yes, he made a mistake but it is not the end of the world. I am quite sure he learned from it. Please don't put him in charge of guarding Gollum. I think that would be a good job for Tinar. It was good to have Emmelin waiting for him at the end of the day. He needs a nice shoulder to cry on.

Author Reply: I think discipline (such as a partner's outraged comments on behavior at a party) gets meted out when one is suffering from a hangover because what one did while drunk was probably stupid. :-)

Can you imagine having Tinar lording it over you? I couldn't stand it. I sent him off to the wilds for four or five days, and if he doesn't behave himself, I'm going to kill him. He is on my last nerve.

Thranduil was wise and knew that Sinnarn already had a father and a captain. What he needed was someone to offer him good advice. And Emmelin turned out to be one of those girls who finds bad boys attractive. Annael is lying down with a cold cloth on his head.

What can I say but POOR SINNARN! Do you think if I scream really loudly from where I am that it's not really his fault, that the elves would hear me and ease off on poor Sinnarn? The humiliation that Sinnarn is feeling must be totally overwhelming. I was overwhelmed by it. But he dealt with it quite courageously, I thought and I really hope he's given another chance to redeem himself. Thank goodness for Thranduil and Emmelin. Their standing by him must be enough to pull him back from total dispair. And Legolas' compassion shows through again. A really great chapter even though it made me feel Sinnarn's humiliation and pain every word of the way.

Author Reply: I know. It made me squirm to write this stuff. I tried to make it clear that Sinnarn's family loves him but feels they can't spare him this. There's nothing they can do once things have been set in motion. Sigh.
