Another wonderful chapter! What a wonderful big brother Elrohir is-reading books and acting out parts, what fun. The second age story was sad and a foretaste of the sadness yet to come in all of their lives. Well done.

It is a dark and stormy morning where I am, so the end of the chapter dovetailed nicely with my current environment!

Great job as always and can't wait for more.

Author Reply: Oh, isn't the weater a wonderful source of external conflict? We had nearly 4 inches of rain yesterday and flood warnings, tornado and thunderstorms again too. At least we had no destruction, unlike Kansas last night :(

I am goad you liked the second age part - I am having great fun imagining Celebrian as a child.

I'm sorry but the wretched little boys deserved to land in the manure. You go, Celebrian!

I usually like the Second Age stuff the best in this story (as I like the First Age stuff in "History Lessons"), but the moment when Galadriel approaches Elrond about using the rings was an intriguing one. I can see her doing it. And I can see Celeborn being worried.

When we read LOTR, the rings of power are just given facts and we know about them, but when you put yourself in the place of the people just learning about them, you have to wonder how they ever figured them out. No one knew about them, after all. They were a new threat. And usually with new threats, you only know how bad they are after it's too late to do you any good.

Author Reply: As you know, I was rather surprised to try to put myself in their shoes and figure out what they knew, when they knew it and then what to do about it. Sauron is gone, they have no idea where he lives or if he has 'people' or strength, or if his desire was to take his knowledge elsewhere or descend back on the elves. Very intriguing.

And yes, I rather think no one pushed Celebrian around!

Is Galadriel being devious here and trying to work on Elrond so they can work as a team to tackle Celeborn's objections to using the rings?

You have made me feel sorry for Celebrimbor. That was a terrible burden of knowledge and guilt for him to bear.

I love the family interaction: Arwen's devotion to her daernaneth, Celeborn's love of his daughter, Elrond relaxing in Celebrian's joyous company, Elladan recovering his sense of humour - poor Elrohir still suffering, but enjoying himself with his little sister. So often the whole family is only seen in conjunction with Serious Events, yet there must have been centuries without those happening.

I love Celebrian singing 'certain verses' of the Dwarfs walking song - I take it the verses more suited to polite company? And the stories of her as a child - fighting with the ellyn because they were rude about her adar! Perhaps she deserved to have little monkeys like Elladan and Elrohir!

Lovely mesh of light and dark, serious and playful.

Author Reply: Sometimes one wonders about Galadriel! That foresight and all...she can be fun to write because you don't really know about her motives - what can look selfish and like a grab for power can be something done for the good of all middle-earth and so on.

And I think Celebrian more than deserved her twins. It was humor on the part of the Valar after the mischief she was in as a child :-)
