History Lessons: The Second Age  by Nilmandra 13 Review(s)

I particularly liked Elrond worrying about whether he and Celebrian had been quiet. He is so endearing. The working of the family bond were interesting here too: Celebrian and Elrond bonded to one another and being damaged when the bond was disrupted, and the children being bonded to both.

And I am so glad to be back in the Second Age. I expect to learn a lot.

Author Reply: This combing of fea is interesting to ponder - so is the idea that jewel-smiths built power into metal and jewels! Both astound me and I wonder how in the world we try to explain such things?

Nice to see that even now (well, Third Age) elves can make mistakes - sometimes it seems that only the earlier elves messed up :)

Never much of a tv watcher, I nevertheless must have been particularly keen to resume my online reading last Saturday night (ignoring a documentary I would, normally, have been keen to watch), and my son asked what I was reading .... and so toddled back to school on Sunday evening with History Lessons on his laptop (they have only sporadic internet access, and never in the dorm). He only got as far as Chapter 4 during the week, but is enjoying it, especially the "modern" storyline (I thought he would prefer the "historical" one, but I think he is taken with your Elladan and Elrohir!). So, another convert to the wonder that is Tolkien fanfiction!

Thank you, for entertaining me ... and now, himself!

Author Reply: Wow - I am glad you have found someone else to enjoy the story! I have another reader who reads this aloud to her husband, which thrills me too. Thank you for letting me know this!

I've never followed a non-hobbit story for so long, and with such awe and delight. You are truly a master storyteller, Nilmandra. I'm just captivated by passages such as these:

"The sudden presence of a fourth surprised her, but it was Elladan’s fëa that drew Elrohir back to them. Celebrían could see the beauty and strength of their fëar together, and she watched as Elladan took away some of Elrohir’s pain and confusion, bearing it himself and relieving his twin of some of his burden. In that lightened state, Elrohir could now sense the fëar of his parents and draw near to them. Elrond’s disbelief and wonder at this relationship between his sons flowed through to her, and Celebrían reached physically for Elladan’s hand.

After Elrohir’s feä again grew strong, Elrond pulled away and Celebrían could feel that he was utterly spent. She opened her eyes to meet his, and saw a depth of weariness that frightened her, and a depth of love that consumed her."

My goodness. Just lovely.

Author Reply: Thanks, Shirebound - I consider it a real compliment that you are reading when there is not even a hobbit on the horizon! But, how amazing to think it is these same characters that will help Frodo many years in the future. I am glad you are still enjoying this.
