I should be studying, but the sound of voices draws me to the window. Sam is planting as he listens to Bilbo telling him a story of Elves.

I smile. Bilbo loves telling Sam stories, for Sam is the best audience. He laughs at the funny parts and weeps at the sad parts. And I know he isn't simply being polite, for I know Sam. He can't hide what he feels, and he feels everything.

I have heard the Gaffer telling him to mind only his work. But I think that Sam has a heart big enough both for cabbages and potatoes, and for Elves and starlight.
