As we are about to set off at last from Lothlórien, I see Frodo hesitate, his face unreadable. Then, with that now-familiar squaring of his shoulders, he silently accepts my hand and settles into the boat.

Only later do I learn, from Merry, how Frodo's parents died. I had not known before.

Frodo had not set foot in a boat since that tragedy. And yet today he simply accepted the necessity of doing so, and did it without a word.

Just when I thought that my wonder at the amazing courage of this one small person could grow no further, I find myself mistaken yet again.
