Of all the things I expected on this journey, the last was that I would suddenly look at my gardener and see a completely different Sam Gamgee. Has two nights on the road already changed him? Or is this who he has always been, and I never noticed?

How did I earn such a companion? I have treated him well enough through the years, I know, but was a smile, a shared meal, an encouraging remark on the flowers really worth this? Does he even know what he is pledging himself to? Or that he might pay for it with his life?
