Only when Legolas stops me, speaking urgently, do I notice that Frodo and Sam have fallen behind the rest of us in our weary flight to Lothlórien. I do believe that they would have gone on until they dropped, never saying a word, and we would have reached our goal less one Ring-bearer and one faithful gardener, if not for our Elf.

What am I to do with such foolish, if admirable, stoicism?

Then -- after some persuasion -- I finally remove Frodo's jacket and tunic, and laugh to find him wearing Bilbo's mithril shirt.

Hobbits truly are full of surprises, and this hobbit most especially.
