I closed this window without writing anything a couple of times, because I didn't know what to say. This chapter is the first you have written that has made my eyes wet. It gave an unusually clear mental image, and brought back memories of another funeral several years ago.
At least we know that they will be reunited.
Author's reply
Hi Siiw. It does make for difficult reading, especially for those of us who have lost loved ones. But this is the last of the "3-hanky" scenes, you might say. *grin* The rest of the story is less sad as we see Ingwë as Ingaran once again. Thanks for reading and reviewing. It's much appreciated.

Oh, that was so beautiful, I've got the sniffles!
I think, maybe, that Ingwion is finally coming to realise that his brother is dead, hopefully the start of his healing.
I think Ingwe was correct in including his brother and his wife in the ceremony, maybe seeing the results of his machinations will bring home to him the seriousness of the problems facing him.
Now to see how the trial unfolds.
Huggs,
Lynda
Author's reply
Hi Lynda. Ingwion is indeed beginning to recognize and accept that his brother is dead and healing has begun, though we know he still has a long way to go. And yes, the trial begins and we'll see how that unfolds. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

I'm in tears, crying like a baby. It is like I'm saying goodbye to a family member.
Bad thing is that I'm at work....It is so sad.
Great chapter.

Hi Fantasia. I know just how you mean and you will never know how long I agonized over Ingalaurë dying and what would follow afterwards, but it was already established in "Elf, Interrupted" and so it had to be done.
Hopefully your coworkers were sympathetic. *grin*

At least Ingwion has realized and acknowledged that his brother is dead. I don't think anybody is going to call off his Maiarin guards anytime soon, though! He is still quite a long way from being sane, and under the circumstances, I think unexpected behavior is more or less to be expected.
Author's reply
Hi Sunny. Yes, Ingwion has begun to acknowledge that Ingalaurë is indeed dead, but no one is going to call off the Maiarin guards just yet. He does indeed have a long way to go before he can be declared "safe", as we will see in subsequent chapters. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

Yay for Valandur, thinking clearly even in a situation like this. He has really become one of my favourite characters. :)
Author's reply
Hi Siiw. I'm glad Valandur has become one of your favorite characters. He's one of my favorite characters, too, and someday I hope to write his story. I'm curious to know how he came to marry the eldest daughter of Finwë and Indis and became Ingwë's chief loremaster and I'm sure others are equally curious.

now Ingwion´s sanity has departed, or? What when he remembers? Will he snap or come back to his senses? Poor ellon!I doubt that it will be wise to let him come to the trial. Serves Ingoldo right. Hope he has felt what fear is! Gripping chapter. Thank you. Lai
Author's reply
Hi Lai. Ingwion is obviously not working with a full deck and no one is quite sure how to deal with the situation. There will be some judgments of error on the part of certain people concerning Ingwion in the future as we will see. Glad you found the chapter gripping. Thanks for letting me know. No, Ingwion is definitely not all there right now. And as for the search, seeing as it was so unsuccessful at first, the elves just aren't used to such extreme situations, and also unused to people who aren't sane. Seeing Ingwion crouching over his uncle like that, pressing a knife to his throat must have been horrifying - especially with his almost elfling-like behavior about killing his uncle.
And it was his mother who got him - sort of - out of it. Or at least got him to behave himself. Smart of Ingwë to send for her!
I suspect Ingoldo is right now rummaging through his clothes for a new pair of pants. ;-)
Author's reply
You're right about that, Sunny. And we see here just why Ingoldo fears his nephew, knowing what he is truly capable of doing. And Ingwë's no fool. He knows how to get his children to behave - send them to Ammë. *LOL!* Thanks for reading and reviewing. It's much appreciated.

Oh, good, they did make it in time, I am not too fond of Ratty but slitting his throat would be too easy for him, putting him on bread and water for a yen or two might help!
Ingwion, Ingwion, Ingwion what are we to do with you child? I am glad Elindis was able to bring him out of his madness and that he is an honorable ellon and will abide by his promise. Let's hope Manveru and Eunaro will be able to help him in their own unique way.
I think Ingwe would have gone to see Lemenyon's family eventually, he does have a lot on his mind, what with the trial and the farewell to Ingalure to plan.
Huggs,

Hi Lynda. Yes, they made it just in time, though not in time to prevent Ingwion from putting the fear of Ingwion into Ingoldo. *grin*. We will see how everyone deals with Ingwion's mental state as the rest of this story continues. If he is reacting this way without remembering that Ingil id death, how will he react when he remember? Ingoldo trail will be a real trial to everybody.
And all the royals will be present. It is interesting that all the Kings have family member lost in this darkness, for sure they will understand each other better.
Author's reply
Hi Fantasia. Ingwion still believes that Ingalaurë is alive but Ingoldo has hidden him somewhere and he is trying to convince his uncle to tell him what he's done with his twin. Ingwion is definitely one frie short of a happy meal, as Jack O'Neil would say. *grin*
And you are correct. All the Royals have lost family members, either from death or what they assume is permanent exile, so they can find comfort from each other and give one another support, which is very important for anyone suffering a loss.

Atto,
I'm still reeling a bit from this chapter and the next one. They're both very well-written, but very sad, and I ache for Ingwi, not to mention the rest of the family...and the Vanyar. "The rest of the family" pointedly excluding a certain Ratty and his wife (but not son), of course. (Ratty is a good name for that piece of work!)
So. Is Ratty going to get in trouble then? One would think so, even hope so. The one thing that lightened my mood a bit was the whole "bossy Maia" thing. I am still convinced Marilla & Marillien are one and the same, you know.
Tye-melin, Atto. Sorry for the delay.

OMG!!! You really know how to finish a chapter!! All was so sad, calm, and quiet. I was in tears and thinking that Ingwon was sedated. And then, he did exactly what they were trying to prevent. At least, the whole palace is full of Valars and I can see why Ingoldo is afraid of him.
Poor, poor Ingwon. I cannot understand elves; of course, their fading is such an alien concept to humans, something similar to suicide. It seems that they are not equipped with the survival mechanisms that humans have, maybe because they immortality. I'm thinking that maybe was better to him to fade instead of being half mad with grief.
The details about where to bury the body was creepy, I never thought about the detail of the reborn walking past their grave. Cremation could have being a good solution, I think.
Now, until Monday...
Thank you.
Author's reply
Hi Fantasia. Well, Námo adamantly refused to all Ingwion the luxury (and that's what it is) of fading, knowing that his presence would be vital in the future when Glorfindel shows up in Vanyamar. I dread to think what might have happened if Ingwion hadn't been there to help Finrod with Glorfindel.
And yes, the burial thing is a bit creepy when you think about it. In Middle-earth it wouldn't be a problem since those reborn (with the one exception) would never return there and Glorfindel's grave would not be accessible, being under water.
Until Monday... thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it.

Oh S**t! It looks like Ingwion is a bit more with it than we thought! I hope somebody thinks to check on Ratty in time, Ingwe does not want a Kinslayer for a son.
Yes, that would be a bit weird, "...and this is where we had you buried, son"
is not a comment a father would want to make while strolling through the gardens with said son!
Poor Ingwion, I seem to be saying that a lot lately, he will need a lot of love and sympathy to get through this, maybe a trip to Nienna's or a stay in Lorien?

Hm. I am reminded of this quote: "The prospect of being hanged focuses the mind wonderfully." Ingoldo is not facing a noose, but an enraged nephew with a sharp knife, who is very willing to use that knife on Ingoldo.
No wonder Ingoldo fears his nephew - as soon as he was able to create a chance, Ingwion went after Ingoldo, quite efficiently and purposefully, and quite rational in his madness.
Well, we know Ingwion did not get to kill Ingoldo, but perhaps Ingoldo at least got a scar or two as a memento of this day. *feeling bloodthirsty*
Author's reply
Hi Sunny. I'm sure Ingoldo would agree with that quote. LOL! And we can see why Ingoldo fears his nephew more than his brother the High King. Ingwion may be insane but within his insanity he has a cold clarity of purpose, as we can see. We'll see how things turn out in the next chapter. Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it.

I had to give myself a bit of space before commenting on this chapter.
Needless to say, I have fallen in love with the twins. The death of one, though foreshadowed throughout the previous chapters, was difficult to read. The grief of the remaining twin still hangs heavy over me. Kudos for great writing.
However, common law and those laws established more recently, consider Ingil's death a felony murder. And makes any participant in such a felony criminally liable for any deaths that occur during or in furtherance of that felony. The kidnapping makes this a felony murder.
Also, this was regicide. If Ingwe died during his own kidnapping and if Ingwion died during this time, Ingil would be king. Therefore, his death would be considered a form of regicide. An even more serious crime than felony murder.
Now - we, of course, have the odd fact that Ingil will return, physically, from Mandos sometime in the future.
Does that mean that Ingoldo should still not suffer death for the murder of Ingil? He too will enter Mandos' gates and return in time.
I know what you do to Ingoldo in Elf Interrupted, but I don't agree. You, however, are the author.... I must bow to the author's decision, but I don't agree.
Author's reply
Hello, Agape. It looks as if you caught up. *grin* You are, of course, free to disagree with how I've written certain things and I would be very surprised if everyone who read my stories did indeed agree with them (and me). That being said, I think you are missing the point here. You are speaking of laws that apply to us humans, or rather to our particular society (other societies would have different responses to these 'crimes'). But these are Elves, and they are not bound by our laws. And more importantly, these are Elves of Aman who have never (as far as we know) had to formulate laws about felony murder and regicide (and our own laws on these matters have been developing over the last 6000 years if you want to be anthropologically correct about it). This is terra incognita for these people, and, keeping in mind that these are indeed Elves and not humans, their own mindset and their responses with regards to all this will be totally different from ours, perhaps, even alien from our point of view. They barely have the vocabulary in which to discuss these matters yet.
How Ingwë resolves this will, of course, be shown in later chapters. Once Ingalaurë's funeral is done with there are only two other things which need to be dealt with before we can bring this story to a close: Ingoldo's trial and Arafinwë's coronation.
Thanks for taking the time to read and review. I really appreciate you doing so.

I cannot understand why everyone is so understanding with Ingoldo. He has caused so much trouble and grief and anger and sorrow and done so with full conscience. Ingwe should not trust him one bit. I hope he will not get dissapointed again. The reactions of Arafinwe and Ingwe on Eonwe´s announcement over the recorded oaths were amusing. Don´t make to many vows indeed! Thank you for another grieving but so good chapter. Lai
Author's reply
Hi Lai. It's not that everyone is understanding of Ingoldo, is that these people are operating from a custom of civility and a code of chivalry that our world has pretty much lost. Ingwë does not in fact trust his brother and we will see to what extent he does not in the next chapter. I thought it was amusing with everyone (not just Ingoldo) doing a quick examination of conscience at Eönwë's pronouncement. *grin* Thanks for reading and reviewing. I appreciate it very much.

· Chapter 118: Making Arrangements
Yes, Ingwion is definitely a mental basket case right now. And we also know that the road to healing is going to be a long one. And no wonder he is having amnesia about Ingalaurë's death - he has been very deeply traumatized, but he will need to remember it in order to function.
One part of him certainly knows, though - or else he wouldn't have had that kind of reaction to the mere mention of Ingoldo's name. And that reaction also gives notice that Ingoldo and Ingwion need to be kept apart, lest Ingwion tries to kill his uncle. I wonder if perhaps that has been slightly less than successful - in IE it is clearly stated that Ingoldo fears Ingwion. Ingwion did attack his uncle when his brother died, and that plus perhaps one or two additional berserker attacks qould certainly account for his fear.
The setting between the "just a chat" between Ingwë and Ingodo certainly looks fairly trial-like - I suspect it was arranged so to put Ingoldo in the right frame of mind. And it is clear that Ingwë is not feeling particularly charitable towards his brother right now.
and it was good of Eönwë to show himself while he was there on business. I think Ingoldo needed to be told that his oath was known and recorded. So hopefully he will behave himself. For now.
Author's reply
Hi Sunny. Yes, Ingwion is definitely a mental basket case and we'll see just how mental he really is in subsequent chapters and what happens between him and Ingoldo when no one is looking. *grin*
And the 'chat' was deliberately set up to show Ingoldo that his brother was very serious about what was happening and will happen. And actually, I think they all needed Eönwë's little lesson. *grin*
