I was absolutely delighted to see a new chapter posted. (I had just been thinking about you.) Poor Haleth; she and Inglor are still locking horns so to speak.
Author's reply
Thank-you, Tari. Poor Haleth. She still doesn't know what Inglor is up to and she still has to live with the consequences.

Aha! Good to finally see them being thrown together like this - I hope they can sort something out before either has the urge to drown the other one...
Author's reply
Inglor probably wouldn't let Haleth drown; he's had a couple of chances to do so and didn't. I'm not so sure about Haleth...

I love everything about this story. It's beautifully written, it is about an Elf and a mortal woman (a favourite subject of mine) and has to do with aging and how Elves lack the understanding of just what this means (another favourite subject of mine).
Haleth's feelings and Inglor's reactions to how she feels are fascinating and make me want to read on to find out how deeply their relationship and understanding of each other will develop.
Author's reply
Thank-you just-jenni.
Elves and Men are related closely enough to be able to communicate, but the immortal/mortal dichotomy makes for really large differences. Inglor isn't stupid. He's aware of how mortals physically age. He just doesn't understand how it affects them on the inside. They care for each other, but the differences in their world views keeps them apart but they communicate just well enough to not fully understand the gulf between them. (Does that even make sense?)
Thanks for taking the time to review.

Hurrah! I had a reminder for this chapter on Sunday morning but hadn't time to read - what a pleasure to remember it this evening.
Poor Haleth is having such trouble adjusting - and yet there are clearly other people who have their own sorrows, too like Anairë still mourning, and still with 'family problems' unresolved.
I presume Haleth is going to try to make the trip from Tol Eressëa to seek her long lost home - unless a hobbit or two can persuade her not to. There again it would be an awfully big adventure - she might have a couple of stow-aways!
I am still fretting over where Inglor is, of course.
Author's reply
Hello Curiouswombat.
It has been quite a while since the last chapter was posted, hasn't it? I appreciate your extended patience.
Haleth really doesn't know if she's coming or going. If she were any less self-absorbed, she might try to think of a way to help Anaire.
You're right. Haleth has ulterior motives for going to Tol Eressea.
Inglor will be back soon.
Thank-you for reviewing.

Now I would like to know more about these tapestries that seem to move. And now we find that Anaire, too, has problems of her own. Perhaps it's a family thing?? Looking forward to more, as always.
Author's reply
Hello Freyalyn
I didn't make up the tapestries. They're mentioned somewhere in one of the Books of Lost Tales. I feel for Anaire and for the otherw who stayed. They all lost so much but the loss was communal and private at the same time. Everyone would have lost someone. Most people would have lost quite a few. I think of it as a reflection of British society after World War I when so many men were gone.
Thank-you for taking the time to review.

So glad to see more!
And it seems some progress is being made. More mysteries, inevitably.
but the time is not yet right -- Well, I hope it will be right soon! Can't meet her own great-grandson yet ... good heavens ... *grumble grumble* And she could meet the hobbits too! *seriously wonders if Anairë is nuts*
Author's reply
Thank-you eiluj. There are many mysteries in the Undying Lands. If Haleth weren't so self-absorbed, she might find unravelling them interesting.
Anaire's attitude is purely the result of authorial invention. I know that most fan fiction set in Valinor has the Exiles settled on the main continent with varying degrees of conflict between those who stayed and those who went to Middle-earth. I approach the situation from a slightly different angle.
Thanks for reviewing.

At long last, a new chapter! An interesting, if brief, scene between Haleth and Anairë and her discussion about her family. I look forward to reading more, especially Haleth's return to Tol Eressëa. I wonder if Inglor will follow her there? He is such an enigma at times.
Author's reply
I almost fell over when I realized the chapter before this had been posted in April. Inglor has been conspicuous by his absence. He'll be back soon. I seldom try to write from his POV because I find it very difficult to get into the head of a several thousand year old individual. What would that be like? The mental landscape would be quite alien, but not completely so.
Thank-you for taking the time to review Fiondil.

Author's reply
Hello, Galathil. Thank-you for being so patient. Anaire lost just about everything; her husband and all four of her children. Anyone who can survive that sort of loss without being twisted by bitterness is a stong person indeed. Although it would be difficult to complain when so many others had suffered the same and worse.
Inglor will be back soon.

I truly enjoy the depth you have been able to instill in the cultural differences not only between haleth and the edhel but between the different races of elves themselves. Watching Inglor and Haleth interact has brought both tears and laughter at times. My husband comes from a culture where some things are very different from my own. Even after thirty years of marriage we sometimes find ourselves at odds of cultural differences and/or misunderstandings. Some beliefs that one was raised with become so ingrained that you respond as a matter of course without even realizing it until later if at all.
Author's reply
Thank-you aelfwine. The cultural interactions are something I really try to think through before writing.
You're right about the cultural differences, they really have an affect, even in cases where you wouldn't think they'd still exist. I'm Canadian. My husband's parents and my parents were all born here, yet my husband's family's background is British. Mine isn't. Like with your husband and yourself, it's caused its share of misunderstandings and miscommunications.
I'm lucky in that my workplace is very multicultural. There are a lot of situations where we all react a little differently and then discuss it later. It's quite the eye opener.
Thank-you for the review.

It is so good to see Haleth is back. I missed her.
Her discontent is understandable to a degree. Were I in her shoes, I would be delighted to live among the elves, at leaat I think I would.
Author's reply
Hello, Tari
Thank-you for reviewing. Haleth knows she's lucky to be where she is. She knows that almost everyone on Middle-earth would happily change places with her. But she's not happy. It's the height of ingratitude and really rude to not be gracious about where she is and what's been done to her, so she can't speak of her unhappiness.
Which leaves the poor Elves with nothing to understand her and no way to help her. In spite of the huge cultural differences, they must be able to see that something's wrong. Most of them (Not including Finarfin, it's good to be King) don't want to ask her why she is unhappy because she's so insistent that she can't be unhappy. She's really painted herself into an emotional corner.
Thanks for reviewing.

I wish she would talk plainly about her problems! Maybe she could move on Tol Eressëa for some time! And Inglor could visit every day! I truly hope she'll get better, otherwise there will be no progress at all between them!
Oh! And I forgot about the engagement ring ... Oh dear ...
Love your story !!!
Author's reply
Hello, Silmarien. Thank-you for reviewing...in both places.
Haleth comes from a culture where people didn't tend to talk about their problems, especially when she's in a position that her countrymen literally died to be in.

It looks like some progress is about to be made.
Haleth is showing a bit of sense (wanting to visit Frodo and Bilbo). Maybe they or Elrond will be able to help.
Hopefully the escort will include Inglor.
A pity Finarfin didn't think to tell the Telerin ambassador she's descended from Elwë.
Author's reply
A pity Finarfin didn't think to tell the Telerin ambassador she's descended from Elwë.
For whatever reason, I completely failed to remember that little tidbit of information. That does bring up a few interesting questions, though. What would the Telerin royal house think of a Secondborn relative? Would they put more weight on the relationship with Elwe? Or would they group her with the Noldorin ancestors? Given her recent ship-thieving escapade, I'm inclined to pick B. How would all of the mortal blood figure into her standing with them?
This bring up some interesting potential political fallout later in the story. Thank-you for reminding me!

And of course, no mention of the betrothal. *Shakes head* This is a real fine mess Haleth is in. I loved Finarfin here. He's trying to understand but Haleth isn't giving him much to go on. Silly girl. She's as bad as Inglor. I think they both need someone to read them the riot act separately and together, then maybe things will get better for the poor dears. Good chapter, Haleth. Hope to see more soon.
Author's reply
Poor Finarfin. He really does want to help. Unfortunately, Haleth has a deep-seated suspicion of powerful people.
I think even if someone did sit them down and tell them what was going on that they'd still find a way to make a mess. This sounds like a challenge to me!
Thanks for the idea!

I just realised that one of your stories (Castamir's heir) was not posted over there! I nearly missed it !!!
It was fantastic, and it makes me even more curious about Haleth!
You wrote that she has green eyes and reddish hair, that's very peculiar for a Númenórean ...
First Caranthir and Fingolfin ... Who is she?
You're a great writer! Hope reading the next chapter soon!

I can't believe Haleth is so upset by the thought of being married to Inglor for the rest of eternity. I should think that would be a wonderful fate. Or is something else bothering her, something yet to be revealed.

Hahahahaha! Always Haleth and Inglor are soooo........unknowing of each other, it's like they can't see each other. Well Haleth had better buck up and accept things...right? But being Haleth this may be a problem. LOL Hugs The Imp P.S. I am going to reread this whole story, I think I need to, to remember some of the details and of course for the enjoyment.

They do have a difficult time understanding each other. It doesn't help that neither of them is willing to directly speak of their feelings to each other.
The slow pace that the story is being posted at makes it difficult to keep track. I'm sorry for that. Editting isn't something that comes easily.

Now isn't that just typical of Inglor! Honestly, I'm surprised he's allowed out without a leash. He can be such a jackass, even for an Elf. Poor Haleth. This should be very interesting.
Author's reply
Inglor makes a lot of assumptions. If Haleth wan an elf, she would have a better chance of understanding his behavior. But she isn't and she isn't that familiar with his culture. Meanings that are as plain as day to him fly right over her head. The two of them do not communicate well with each other.

Oh how very Haleth. To finally have proof positive that Inglor loves her - but not to really notice as her mind picks up a possible negative side to it all.
Mind you, when it occurs to her that it clearly means he really does want to marry her, the idea of being stuck at the Noldor court for all infinity would be truly frightening!
Author's reply
Looking back on it now, I should have written this chapter a bit differently and given Haleth more of a reason to be upset. I should go back and edit it.
Still, Haleth does have a real talent for seeing the downside in everything and Inglor doesn't communicate well with her.
I can see your point, too. Who would want to be on display at court for all of eternity where every single aspect of your behavior is analyzed and judged?
Thank-you for reviewing and thank-you for the idea.

Haleth's memory has never been good. Now that the memories seem to be coming back, she's not sure if they're real. Inglor can't be very happy, either; Haleth isn't happy with the decision he made for her. The two of them could have advanced degrees in lack of communication and miscommunication.
