O.M.G.! What were they thinking? Good on Glorfi for refusing to waer them!
I have been thinking about what I would have them wear and came up with:Dark green leggings and jerkin over a dark red shirt, 'leaf' boots and maybe a 'Robin Hood' hat with a feather for indoor wear with heavy green pants and a bright red Parka with white fur trimming plus heavy boots for outdoors. The red Parka because it would be easy to spot in the snow! No reason why the ladies could not wear something similar.
That's my two cents!
Lynda
Author's reply
We will see what Glorfindel and the others come up with soon enough, Lynda. Your own suggestions are certainly more reasonable than what the administration came up with, that's for sure.

What was those costumes??? I am consumed with curiosity!!
A brass bikini and a brass codpiece??
Author's reply
Not sure what you mean, Sunny. I think the description of the costumes was clear enough. No mention of bikinis or codpieces, brass or otherwise, that I recall. *grin*

*squeaks happily* I dunno why, but I love the phrase you use, "a conspiracy of love". ...I really had nothing more constructive to say than that. Merry Christmas!

That you took the time to say it, bookworm, is good enough. Thanks for letting me know. And Merry Christmas to you, as well.

Námo and Estë? That's a twist! Can they change their appearance? I thought Glorfindel would have recognized him at least.
I am definitely enjoying this thus far!
Author's reply
Tolkien states that the Valar could take any form they wished (he describes Yavanna as sometimes taking the form of a tree) but that normally they chose to use one form out of habit, but there is nothing that says they couldn't disguise themselves to look human so that even Glorfindel would not recognize them. Besides, in our own world we often hear stories of angels in the guise of humans helping people out, so why not the Valar?
Anyway, I am glad you are still enjoying this story, Shyler. Thanks for letting me know. I really appreciate it.

I like Esther. Hooray for Valar as waitresses! Namo was hoot as Nate, too. I can't wiat to find out who or what else may be behind all that has happened to our intrepid elves.
Author's reply
We will certainly find out before the end, I promise. Glad you found Este and Namo a hoot in their Esther and Nate disguises. Even I wasn't entirely sure if they were really Valar or not until near the end of writing the chapter. Those Valar are a tricky lot. *grin*

Oh, the Valar are taking an interest in them... I like that! :) I guess I should say an active interest, I'm sure they've always been interested even if from a distant! Amusing image of them in the cafe like that. :)

Thanks, Radbooks. I am glad you liked this. Yes, the Valar have always taken an interest, especially in Glorfindel.

This was funny the first time. It was hilarious the second time. Námo and Estë in a closed café serving pie and tea and drinking coffee and dispensing wisdom disguised as pop psychology, complete with Shakespeare quotes. They played their parts perfectly.
Will the elves get to go home at the end of this story? I hope they do.
Author's reply
Thanks, Pamalokwen. I am glad you found this so hilarious. It was amusing for me to portray these two Valar as if they were humans, especially Este. As for what will happen to the Elves at the end of the story... you will just have to wait and see. *grin*

Hm, do I get the impression that 'Someone' has decided it is time for Glorfindel and Company to come Home?
They have been away for far to long.
Namo has always had a soft spot for Glorfindel in spite or may be because of all the problems he caused.
Besides it is time the Twins went home, their Naneth has been waiting far to long for them!
More please,
Lynda
Author's reply
As to whether the Elves end up going Home remains to be seen. The Valar may have other plans for them.

I'm going to be a bit late for work between weather and giving in to the impulse to read this now, but I had to tell you that this was exactly what I needed to read today.
I was feeling a bit like Glorfindel for various reasons I won't bore you with, and this vicarious chat with "Esther" cheered me up, and got me looking forward to the day instead of continuing in the discontented way it was looking to be.
I love this story, Fiondil. Thank you so much for each new chapter!

It is rather obvious now that there _is_ a conspiracy - even if Glorfindel is merely suspicious, and not to the point of raging paranoia as yet.
I wondered if perhaps Olórin was going to pop up to, ah, pester one of the Elves. Instead it was two of the Valar.
It shall be interesting to see what they are plotting ;-)
And which of the Valar is going no show up next?

Well, Sunny, as to who may show up later on in the story remains to be seen, but I think you will be pleasantly surprised. *grin*

· Chapter 6: So Which One of These Is Rudolph?
This chapter was priceless! The song, the reindeer names, and the Elves just can't stop being Elvish, can they? I love the way Glorfi allows the others to tease him, but it is nie to think that the reason these Elves have not faded is that they still have a great enthusiasm for life.
Hmmmm. Not sure Gandalf would be very happy about the fate of the reindeer bearing his name. I was a veterinary nurse and one client brought her two cats (Merry and Pippin) in for neutering. The post-op advice sheet made for very amusing reading!
Author's reply
Glad you found this chapter priceless, Baggins Babe. I had a great time with it, as I am sure you can tell. *grin* I am sure you are correct that the Elves' great enthusiasm for life is what has kept them from fading. Thanks for reviewing. I really appreciate it.

They just couldn't resist, could they? *grin* Still, it must be very wearing, hiding one's true identity for hundreds of years. I do like to see Glorfindel doing well!
It is strange how the legends have diminished the Elves over the years. The Irish stories were very clear that they were tall and powerful, not the little creatures the Victorians were so fond of. Perhaps they confused their Elves and hobbits.............
Author's reply
Hi, Baggins Babe. Yes it is strange how the legends have diminished the Elves. Even the Germanic Elves were tall and powerful. I am afraid that Victorian sentimentality got in the way of the truth. And you might be correct about confusing Elves with Hobbits. After all, they both have pointed ears. *grin*

You asked what DelaFiore is
You yourself said "Dela" is "of the"
Fiore is the Italian word for flower, though in this case it may be plural, so "Of the Flowers".
(I hope I have this right, Fiondil) :]
At any rate I love the name...
btw, isn't Glorfindel from "The House of the Golden Flower"? Or is that Lothlorien with Galadriel?
Author's reply
Yes, the name translates as 'of the flower(s)', which is appropriate since Glorfindel was the Lord of the House of the Golden Flower in Gondolin. This was about as close as I could come to creating an appropriate surname that would reflect something of his background, much as I have done to some extent with the 'mortal' names of the other Elves.

This is probably one of the most amusing sentences I have yet seen (in reference to elves):
"The three ellyn climbed into Glorfindel’s mini-van..."
=]
I really like the story thus far. It is really interesting to see them portrayed in modern times. You've certainly captured my attention now with whoever was watching them... and I am curious also as to the hint at why they all 'happened' to loose their jobs at the same time.
Síocháin!
Author's reply
Hi, Shyler. Yes, that is a rather amusing sentence and image. I am glad you are enjoying this story. As to why they all happened to lose their jobs at the same time... that will be revealed before the end. More is going on than even Glorfindel suspects. This watcher busines is all very curious indeed. I wonder who is behind this school if the "coincidence" of "The Watcher in the Woods" being shown isn't lost on the Elves. I want to know why the watcher felt familiar to Glorfy. Can't he extend his sensitivites as the others cannot and discern more about the watcher?
I like the way Daeron is trying to help the stutterer. I also like the names you have given the teachers such as the nod to Robin Goodfellow from A Midsummer's Night's Dream. I meant to comment on this before.
BTW, what was Delafiore mean? Dela is of the, but I don't know what Fiore means.
Author's reply
Hi ellie. All your questions (or most of them) will be answered eventually, I promise.
As for the names.... DelaFiore means 'of the flower(s)' in Italian. As Glorfindel was the Lord of the House of the Golden Flower, this is an appropriate surname for him. The names of the Mortals, however, are drawn more from my own childhood or from present circumstances. Marian's surname was the name of classmates of mine, Debbie and Michael Goodfellow, who were twins. Michael was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was 12 and so I gave Marian his name in memory of him. On the other hand, I named Max and Lucy who own the reindeer farm after two horses here at the farm where I am presently living. *grin*

First the musician Darien with the almost elven skill...and now it sounds like there is another elf visiting the area. Maybe elves have lived there for a longer time, interacting with the locals? I am trying to think of who else didn't sail... I do think that if it had been a Maia, Glorfindel would have been the only one to sense it clearly.
The chapter with the reindeer and their names had me laughing loudly at the screen at work, btw!
Author's reply
Hi, Siiw. As for your guesses, we will see eventually who it might have been. And if it was a Maia, he or she might have allowed the other Elves to sense him or her on purpose.

I have really liked this whole story so far - and add me to the list of those intrigued by the mystery. I'm sort of hoping Maglor will come out of the woodwork (well, forest), but I guess we'll see.
On a nitpicky note, you have "the other three were right on his heals." I think you meant the kind of heel you have on your foot...no biggie. You know I'm like that.
Keep up the good work & I'm glad this story is moving so rapidly!

Thanks, Dreamflower.
