that was intriguing and creepy as well. I wonder what is living there and just who is selecting the movies at this place. Hmmm... the plot thickens, the water deepens, and the watchers gain more eyes...

Author's reply

Hi ellie. Glad you found the chapter intriguing and creepy. I think the Elves are beginning to realize that more is going on than they ever suspected and that there may be a darker purpose for their being where they are. We'll see how it turns out by story's end.

Parmalokwen · 13 December 2009 · Chapter 10: Winterdark Tarn

Whoops! Almost slipped there, Glorfindel. Just what did Jud think he heard when he heard Glorfindel say "Mo..." I wonder? Mithrellas and Nimrodel pretending to be cold was rather funny. What is the Thing by the Tarn? I know, I know, I must be patient... Sigh. I suppose it was too much to hope for that Marian and Deirdre would take the protest lying down. They were so proud of those horrid costumes, and they can't like losing control of the Academy like this. That said, unless Marian is an administrator of the Northern Lights Community College and has jurisdiction over non-classtime activities, I am not entirely certain that she was within her authority to do anything more than take back the stolen costume, until such time as the petition was actually presented to her. If she wasn't, shame on her. Speaking of the stolen costume, I neglected to mention my glee in my previous review when I saw that Elladan and Elrohir have embraced the very peculiar family tradition of Noble Burglary, in the footsteps of Beren and Isildur. Amusing though this take on elves-pretending-to-be-mortals is, I really do hope the Elves get to go home, either in this story or in a sequel. Because whenever I get to thinking too much about them, modern day Elf stories universally take on a certain bitterness, even if it wasn't really intended by the author. Personally, the idea of having to spend years pretending to be someone or something other than myself isn't my idea of a good time; it's really more of a nightmare. Since they aren't open about their immortality, they can't form anything more than a casual friendship with any mortal, as they have to remake their identities every 20 or so years to keep anyone from noticing that they aren't aging. The consequences of discovery, and the reason for their subterfuge, are more chilling: If they were discovered by the wrong people, and it was decided they weren't human, and therefore not people...well, that is when people do the most terrible things to each other.

Author's reply

Hi Parmalokwen. Yes, things are pretty tricky for the Elves, especially in this day and age with computers and passports and all that. As to what the fate of these particular Elves will be, that remains to be seen, but I think you will not find it objectionable. Marian probably overstepped her authority, but the damage was already done so I don't think anyone really cared. We will see in the next chapter how Glorfindel solves the uniform problem to the satisfaction of the students if not the administration. *grin*

Dreamflower · 13 December 2009 · Chapter 10: Winterdark Tarn

Oooh! More mystery! Something sleeps there... hmm... And I am curious to see the reaction to the Fashion Rebellion! The administration has got to be a little ticked off... but what did they expect?

Author's reply

Hi, Dreamflower. Yes, more mystery! *grin* We will see in the next chapter what the outcome of the Fashion Rebellion is. The Elves are on the warpath and there is no stopping them now. *grin*

Lynn H · 13 December 2009 · Chapter 10: Winterdark Tarn

The Watcher in the Water is creepy to think about, and I hope it stays asleep. However, I think some of the trees are already a little awake because they aren't trees. Most of the Elves took ship, but what about the other more-or-less immortals? Like Fanghorn and the Huorns?

Author's reply

Hi Lynn. Well, I am not sure if Ents and Huorns survived into the present age, but certainly the trees are coming awake with the presence of the Elves and perhaps the Valar. As for the Watcher in the Water.... hopefully it will remain asleep for a very long time unless someone stupidly disturbs it the way the Dwarves of Moria disturbed the Balrog by digging too deeply.

6336 · 13 December 2009 · Chapter 10: Winterdark Tarn

Hm, seems that Melkor is still making his presence felt. Ski suits sound like a good idea, maybe they can get a discounr from the manufacturer for wearing them? Got to save a few pennies some where! Lynda

Author's reply

We will see in the next chapter what Glorfindel and the others come up with in terms of an Elf Guide uniform. And of course, as Tolkien tells us, all of Arda is Morgoth's Ring, so his presence is felt even if he no longer exists in this universe.

Larner · 13 December 2009 · Chapter 10: Winterdark Tarn

Considering these will be operating in arctic conditions, ski outfits would be far more appropriate than red and green Hobbit outfits! Heh! As for the monster at Winterdark Tarn--sounds as if the tarn were properly named, at least.

Author's reply

Yes, the ski outfits will be more appropriate. What they come up with for a uniform will be revealed in the next chapter. And the tarn was properly named though whichever Mortal gave it its name probably did so without conscious thought as to why.

sazza · 13 December 2009 · Chapter 10: Winterdark Tarn

wow, this is really good. in fact, I think I will create an account here just to get alerts when you update! It has everything a good story needs, and it is just so intriguing, I just want to keep reading it, to know what happens next!

Author's reply

Hello, Sazza. Well, that is great news. I am so glad that you find this story so intriguing. I hope you do create an account and perhaps once you have finished reading this story you might take a look at some of my other stories as well. THank you so much for leaving this review. I really appreciate it.

harrowcat · 13 December 2009 · Chapter 10: Winterdark Tarn

More than coincidences I am thinking! Loved the Hobbit and Mirkwood reference. Thinking of the Elves, and particularly Glorfindel, as on-going stewards of Creation is a comforting thought.

Author's reply

Hi, Harrowcat. Yes, it's more than coincidence, since, as Gandalf was fond of saying, there is no such thing. I am glad you find it comforting to think of the Elves as on-going stewards of Creation, especially Glorfindel. I find it comforting as well.

Kitty · 13 December 2009 · Chapter 9: Red Is So Not My Color

Love the idea with the snow globe, and I liked the archery lesson. The Elves seem to have fun with these lessons, and I am sure their students have fun, too. Ha, I knew it, I knew it! The costumes the school had designed had to be something absolutely terrible and embarassing! So I absolutely enjoyed the student's reaction. This time the Elves hadn't even to be the first one to rebel, the Mortals did a good job at this! And it was fun to watch everyone back away from Glorfindel. He has to be quite intimidating when he's in – can I call that 'balrog-slayer mode'? Interesting to watch how everyone – and not only the Elves – expect Glorfindel to take care of the situation and make things better. And from the looks of it, they're right. I enjoyed everything they did to get out of these ridiculous costumes! Thank you for a particularly enjoyable chapter! I love this story more and more with each chapter :-)

Author's reply

Hi, Kitty. You are most welcome. I am glad you found this chapter particularly enjoyable and that you love this story more and more with every chapter. I did have some doubts as to how well received this story would be considering that it is so completely different from what I normally write so I am glad people are enjoying it very much. Glorfindel is such a natural leader that even the Mortals unconsciously sense it and respond to it, as they do here. And he is quite intimidating even when he isn't in 'balrog-slayer mode'. *LOL*

Kitty · 13 December 2009 · Chapter 8: Conversation In a Café

So Glorfindel is too young to be troubled? *LOL* Considering he has to be well over 10.000 years old that's too funny! That was an interesting conversation. When the waitress started talking about auras I got suspicious, and what she said further made me wonder even more. But even I didn't expect her to turn out to be Estë! That was quite a surprise. And Námo's there as well? Just proves that I was right - it was *not* a coincidence that they all lost their jobs at the same time. Well, I had already wondered if somehow any Valar and Maiar will turn up in the end, only I hadn't expected them to be there so early on! Now I just wonder what they are planning – do they want the six to finally go to Valinor or have they something different in mind? Can't wait to find out! And her advice that he's being too careful to hide his identity is interesting. Another thing I am curious to find out how it is going!

Author's reply

Hi Kitty. I suspect some readers had their suspicions about 'Esther' but it seems no one thought that it could really be Este in disguise, though given the similarities in the names.... Anyway I am glad I surprised you. That was my intent all along. As to what the Valar are planning for our six Elves remains to be seen but I promise that by the end of the story we will know just why they all lost their jobs and ended up at the Elf Academy.

rick · 12 December 2009 · Chapter 8: Conversation In a Café

Hi, Fiondil, This whole story is such a hoot - and now the dei ex machina come into play. I have this weird vision in my head of Este & Namo rubbing their hands together & cackling a la Snidely Whiplash & the A Team - they love it when a plan comes together. In previous chapters, I also really liked Glorfindel & Daeron reacting to the twins' hairstyle wistfulness - I remember my Dad reacting pretty much the same way, a long time ago.

Author's reply

Hi Rick. I am glad you still find this story a hoot. The Valar do love it when a plan comes together, but I doubt Lord Manwe lights up a cigar when it does. *LOL* Thanks for letting me know how much you are enjoying this story. I really appreciate it.

Sunny · 12 December 2009 · Chapter 9: Red Is So Not My Color

My brain really wasn't online yesterday - I spent the day mostly with my duvet and two woolen blankets pulled up all the way to my nose, shivering. I have reread the chapter today. No, I wouldn't want to be caought dead in something like that either. Still, the image of Glorfindel in a brass codpiece - and not much more - is interesting, though... ;-)

Author's reply

I can quite understand, Sunny. I hope you are feeling better today. Yes, Glorfindel in a brass codpiece does evoke interesting images. *grin*

eliza · 11 December 2009 · Chapter 9: Red Is So Not My Color

LOL, love, love, love Elrohir and Elladan. I would have ducked and cover too. An angry Glorindel is not some thing I would want to be any where near either. Immensely enjoying this story.

Author's reply

Thanks, Eliza. I am glad you are enjoying this story. I appreciate you taking the time to let me know.

Fantasia · 11 December 2009 · Chapter 9: Red Is So Not My Color

Fiondil, I don't know why I never read this before. It is so crazy and perfect. I'm at work and reading and trying not to laugh so loud!!! I can't wait for more chapters.... Good that the Valar are still around looking for our elves...

Author's reply

Well, this story has only been up for a few weeks and will be done with in a few weeks more. I am glad you found it and are enjoying it. Thanks for letting me know. I greatly appreciate it.

Parmalokwen · 11 December 2009 · Chapter 9: Red Is So Not My Color

Oy vey. The Elf Academy is in its first year, isn't it? That would explain so many silly things. Wow. EVERYTHING about those costumes is awful. The design, and the materials (felt deforms easily, the knees on those pants will look baggy in about two hours and will not go back, and it'll likely gather dirt like a vacuum cleaner), and that it's dry clean only.

Author's reply

I tried to make the costumes as bad as possible. I am glad you agree. *grin*

Tari · 11 December 2009 · Chapter 5: Elf Legends and Legendary Elves

Words of wisdom from Glorfindel; Eru (God) can create or do anything he chooses. This archery match sounds like so much fun. Too bad it’s not real. I tried archery myself two or three times and really loved it. Of course it was not enough to become very good. Maybe I just didn’t have the right teacher. (giggles)

Author's reply

I have dabbled in archery myself but I am really no good at it. You may be right, though, about having the right teacher. *grin*

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 11 December 2009 · Chapter 9: Red Is So Not My Color

ROFLOL!!!!! It seems Glorfi & co. don't need to take over the classes anymore, the Mortals do a good job of it on their own! And honestly, those uniforms? Ick! Seriously ick. Good for them, protesting it all! (By the way, love the snowglobe. I love snowglobes!!! Especially musical ones!) Can't wait to see what happens next! This time next week will be my last day before winter break, and when I come back, there will be a new teacher...my instructor's accepted a new job in Ventura, and she's leaving us! :( Eagerly awaiting the next installment! Tye-melin, Atar indonyo! Kaylee

Author's reply

I don't think any sane person would want to wear those uniforms, anyway, so it is a good thing the Mortals are taking their cue from the Elves about taking over the classes and protesting. Glad you are still enjoying this, Kaylee. Good luck with your new teacher.

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 11 December 2009 · Chapter 8: Conversation In a Café

I have to admit, you got me with this one. Around about the time the 'aura' bit came into the conversation, I started realizing something was 'off' about "Esther", and perhaps she was a Maia or Valie, or something. But when I got to the end and it said "Este", I felt so ridiculous for not realizing it sooner! Her name was a dead giveaway (oh, and since Esther I believe means "Star", a nice nod to Gil-Estel...Hope is what Glorfi and company need right now, hope and renewed faith!) I should have realized it was Este...and can you believe it, I never figured out Namo at all? Not until you said his name! I guess I didn't really expect Este and Namo to be hanging out in an abandoned cafe...Este wearing gingham, the mind boggles. Tye-melin, Kaylee! *off to read current chapter*

Author's reply

Very astute of you, Kaylee, to see the connection between the meaning of Esther's name and Gil-Estel. Yes, Hope is what Glorfi and the other Elves all need and maybe with this little conversation, Hope is what they will find, or at least, what Glorfi will find. I think I pretty much fooled everyone who read this chapter, so don't feel too bad about it. Even I didn't know for sure who Esther and Nate really were until I got to the end with their conversation after Glorfi leaves the cafe.

harrowcat · 11 December 2009 · Chapter 9: Red Is So Not My Color

This was fun. My colleague was helping out Father Christmas at our local Christmas Fair last Saturday and wanted me to give him a white face with flour and a red nose. We had quite a discussion about the differences between Brazillian, American and British Santas.

Author's reply

Yes, there are a great deal of differences in how Santa or Father Christmas is portrayed throughout the world. I personally like the Father Christmas image rather than Santa Claus. Here in Germany he is actually called St. Nicholas and is dressed as a bishop.

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 11 December 2009 · Chapter 7: How the Rest of the Week Went

Penny whistles? I had to look those up to see what you meant, Atar Fiondil. *grin* I've not heard much about them, but they look nice, maybe I should ask for one for Christmas... The trees are awakening and there's a watcher in the woods...hmm... On to the next chapter then! Tye-melin, Kaylee!

Author's reply

I am sure you would do very well on the penny whistle, Kaylee. *grin*

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 11 December 2009 · Chapter 6: So Which One of These Is Rudolph?

Oh...just *wow*, Atar Fiondil. Right now I'm trying not to fall to the floor laughing at this re-read (the same reaction I had the first time, though I couldn't review then *grin* I have a feeling it'll get me every time!) The Lord of Forests and Lord of the Dead...lol! And Gandalf being gelded...I am sure Olorin would not appreciate hearing THAT one...*snicker* Elves are Elves no matter how much they try not to be! Noldor a strange bunch...hee...I think Peredhil are even worse *lol* but only in a good way! I love the twins and the way they treated the twin reindeer, with respect as they should. :) Tye-melin, Kaylee

Author's reply

Glad you found this chapter so hysterical, Kaylee. That was the general intent, especially the dig at Gandalf. *LOL*

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 11 December 2009 · Chapter 5: Elf Legends and Legendary Elves

*snort* Talk about showing off! Especially Glorfi...*grin* I loved the chapter, Atar Fiondil, I could just see it! I bet the others are sorry they missed out on the fun! Kaylee

Author's reply

Thanks, Kaylee. I am glad you love this chapter, especially Glorfi showing off.

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 11 December 2009 · Chapter 4: Elf Etiquette and Other Lessons

Oh no. Language lessons from the twins! ROFL, those poor Mortals, or should I say poor twins when Glorfi finally gets them alone...if they ever make it to Aman, just wait until Elrond and Celebrian hear THIS one...and them taking over the class was hysterical. "Greetings, fair mortals"? Right. *snort* Tye-melin, Kaylee!

Author's reply

I am sure Glorfi gave them a fine lecture when he got them alone later, one they are not likely to forget anytime soon. *Grin*

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 11 December 2009 · Chapter 3: Getting Acquainted

Atar Fiondil, I've been reading as the chapters are posted. Just catching up on reviews. Oh sweet Valar, this was hysterical! I can't believe the twins actually got drunk...and here again is the (in)famous "The Elf and the Fruit Vendor"! And of course verse thirty-one! Which has something to do with turnips, lol. Oh well, we'll get it out of your Muse someday...maybe... Considering your Muse appears to be Lord Namo, he must know the song very, VERY well and is just not telling you. *considers said conversation with Lord Namo* *Kaylee goes up to Lord Namo, not really afraid of him because he's not (usually) as scary as he's painted* My Lord, would you mind teaching your Mortal admirers the words to verse thirty-one? *Namo raises eyebrow at Kaylee and other Mortal friends and says nothing* Hm, yes, he says nothing, Atar Fiondil. Maybe Varda told him not to tell. *pouts* Tye-melin, Kaylee!

Author's reply

Hi, Kaylee. Considering that most of the song is pretty much X-rated, I doubt it will ever be published on this or any other site. *grin*

Dreamflower · 11 December 2009 · Chapter 9: Red Is So Not My Color

Oh dear! Oh dear! Oh dear! ROTFL! Open rebellion! The descriptions were even worse than what I was first imagining-- something like that ridiculous outfit Will Farrel wore in "Elf" had come to mind. At least they didn't seem to come with red-and-green striped stockings-- though perhaps those had not come in yet...

Author's reply

I am glad I was able to make the descriptions even worse than what you were imagining, Dreamflower. I tried to make them as disgusting as possible. And if there had been red-and-green stockings I think there would have been murder done. *grin*
