Larner · 13 June 2012 · Chapter 41: Adamanta's Children: Buttercup

Oh, how wonderful as this little Luthien among Hobbits found her own place and charmed everyone!

Author's reply

She is a sweetheart! I was trying to show her with some of the traits that appear in her descendants, but also, her character was somewhat inspired by the character of "Phronsie" in Five Little Peppers, who always charmed everyone with her sweetness.

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 12 June 2012 · Chapter 41: Adamanta's Children: Buttercup

Updating the timeline...assuming you meant "four years after Kali and Ban's birth." Also, I like Great-Aunt Gerda's softening, and Buttercup's disposition of expecting everyone to like her, and liking her in turn...I have to say, Buttercup sounds quite a lot like me! :D (If I'm part hobbit, maybe I'm descended from her? I *am* part Scot...it's not too much of a stretch to imagine I'm part Took!) 0 - Briar Rose's birth. She has blue eyes (like movie!Frodo, heh :) ) and dark hair. 3 - Briar Rose becomes a faunt. Raz is born. This is probably around the time Briar Rose follows Tuk about, receiving trinkets from him to keep. 5 - Adamanta "Addie" is born. 6/7 - Around this time, Kali and Ban are born. 7 - Raz burns his fingers, wheedling biscuits from his gammer and ending up with an upset stomach. 8 - Addie is learning to talk and sing. 10/11 - Buttercup is born. 15 - The Wood-elf Galasgil comes to the village and makes a set of shepherd's pipes for Addie. He teaches her, as well as her brothers and sisters to read and write. 16/17 - Around now, Galasgil departs, much to everyone's (but especially Addie's) dismay.

Author's reply

I am really enjoying your timeline! BTW, in my reply to your last review, I meant THIRD Age, not Second! *facepalm*

Virtuella · 9 June 2012 · Chapter 40: Adamanta's Children: Kali and Ban

I found it fascinating to observe my children's development when they were little - with twins it must be doubly fascinating!

Author's reply

I think it must be! I Googled some articles on twins, and was surprised by how often they do some things at the same time, especially physical things such as needing changing!

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 9 June 2012 · Chapter 40: Adamanta's Children: Kali and Ban

Kali and Ban, hmm? I recognized those names as soon as I saw them in the chapter title. :) Interesting that Ban was thought to be *more* clever than Kali, as Banazir/Samwise was called 'Halfwise' and thought to be less clever than his 'betters'. (I wonder how 'Panthael' translates into Hobbitish, as Samwise is 'Perhael'? Hrm...) Anyway, Merry and Sam as twin brothers...heh! I like it! Although I find it funny that Pip is the oldest brother here, lol! :) In case you're interested (and I'm sure you are) it's hard to do this without a birthyear for Briar Rose, but I'll just make 0 the 'year' Tuk and Adamanta had Briar Rose... 0 - Briar Rose's birth. 15 - The Wood-elf Galasgil comes to the village and makes a set of shepherd's pipes for Addie. He teaches her, as well as her brothers and sisters to read and write. 16/17 - Around now, Galasgil departs, much to everyone's (but especially Addie's) dismay. (More to come with more chapters/clarifications, Dreamflower! *grin*) Kaylee!

Author's reply

Ban was thought to be more clever because he got in less trouble, LOL! I've always had the notion that in very many ways Sam and Merry are much alike in their personalities-- so I thought it would be fun to see what the dynamic would have been if they were twin brothers! I like your timeline. I have not set an exact year for Tuk and Adamanta's meeting, but I am thinking it was probably within the first century of the Second Age, but sometime during the last quarter of that century. And I believe that Briar Rose was born in the third year of their marriage.

GamgeeFest · 6 June 2012 · Chapter 40: Adamanta's Children: Kali and Ban

What a treat getting to hear about Adamanta's brood. They certainly kept her busy! How very wise of Kali to learn to listen to Ban. I'm sure that kept him out of all sorts of trouble he would have otherwise gotten into.

Author's reply

Well, I think it was a good idea for Kali to listen to his brother. (Just imagine if Merry and Sam had been twin brothers...)

GamgeeFest · 6 June 2012 · Chapter 39: Adamanta's Children: Addie

Interesting that even back in those days, learning ones letters was considered trouble. ;) The only thing that changed is that it's now considered trouble only for some of the working-class hobbits.

Author's reply

Well, back in those days it was unheard of for any hobbits! Galasgil had a very important role to play in hobbit history!

GamgeeFest · 6 June 2012 · Chapter 38: Adamanta's Children: Raz

Raz sounds like a handful! But an adorable handful. Like father, like son, eh? ;)

Author's reply

Definitely "like father like son"!

Larner · 6 June 2012 · Chapter 40: Adamanta's Children: Kali and Ban

Oh, but they do sound like a handful indeed, these two! But they must have been wonderful at the same time they could be doubly aggravating!

Author's reply

I am quite sure that you are right about that. Even millenia later you can see Adamanta's combination of pride and exasperation as she speaks of them, LOL!

Virtuella · 5 June 2012 · Chapter 39: Adamanta's Children: Addie

Ah, I'm delighted to see that this series is not abandoned! Like the casual way literacy came to the Shire!

Author's reply

Never abandoned! In fact I have been working on it for a while. I decided to just go ahead and get all the chapters about Adamanta's children done without worrying about word count, and then go back and tweak each one to 300 words, instead of trying to get each one perfect one at a time. Slower updates to begin with, but much quicker in the end. It is rather casual. But I thought it might be plausible.

Andrea · 5 June 2012 · Chapter 39: Adamanta's Children: Addie

Now this is interesting! In Addie I can see two of our favourite hobbits: Pippin, because she loves to sing and play instruments and Frodo, because she loves to write. And she's fascinated with (or is it "by"?)Elves.

Author's reply

Yes, the musical side will probably show up in Pippin's line at some point or another. Both "with" and "by" are correct, but "by" is more common.

Andrea · 5 June 2012 · Chapter 38: Adamanta's Children: Raz

"Insatiable curiosity", green eyes, "Little Tûk" - Raz is definitely Pippin's ancestor :-) His older sister Briar Rose with blue eyes and dark hair and a rather quiet nature reminds me of Frodo.

Author's reply

Oh, Raz is DEFINITELY Pippin's ancestor: just look at his name, LOL! She is rather reminiscent of Frodo, but you will find that true of more than one of Adamanta's children.

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 5 June 2012 · Chapter 39: Adamanta's Children: Addie

Dreamflower, I forgot to mention in Raz's review. "insatiable curiousity"? Sounds like someone loves Kipling as much as I do (he's my second favourite author/poet, no prizes for guessing first favourite, hmm?) Anyway, on to Addie. I love love LOVE this nickname. Adamanta Took! Ah, but it's easy to see Frodo in her. I love her taking to the Elf so! I wonder what her brothers and sisters that follow will be like. :) Kaylee P.S. How are *you* faring, Dreamflower? It's been ages since I've written to you, and it seems like eons since you've posted on this story - heh! I do hope you are doing well...I had a scare with Atto Fiondil when he ended up in the hospital. But he's all right now. Are you all right?

Author's reply

LOL! Well, Tooks pretty much were insatiable. Do you suppose the Elephant Child was a descendant? LOL! You will see each of the five main hobbits in several of the children, but some more than others. Keep your eyes peeled: I expect you to notice a certain genealogical pattern to the birth order AND the names. I'm fine. I've had a lot of writing to do that's kept me away from some of my WIPs, but I actually had been working on this story. I decided that rather than trying to get each one word perfect one at a time, I was going to do all of the children's chapters done, and THEN start in on getting them to 300 words exactly. Some of the chapters still need tweaking by a few words more or less, but that won't take long. I had some non-fanfic writing I am working on, plus I had a b2mem story I wanted to complete for the finishathon, but I soon realized that it was just too much for the deadline, so I emailed the mod yesterday to drop out. I will still finish that story, but not till I get more of my OTHER fics done.

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 5 June 2012 · Chapter 38: Adamanta's Children: Raz

"Raz"! Ah, for Razanur! I only just realized that, how silly of me...but indeed this must be the ancestor of our Pippin! *grin* I do love the children of Adamanta, and I suppose it's no surprise that I'm eagerly awaiting Raz's (and Addie's, but I'll get to her) brothers and sisters! (And more "Prisoner"...yes, yes, I'm never satisfied LOL!!!!! Sorry!!!! Heh, you know me, I love your work!) Kaylee

Author's reply

Yep. You got it bang on! I think you are the first person to guess. Yes, there will be more "Prisoner" very soon, in fact. Bilbo just got a new letter from "D.L. Sauron" only just yesterday, and is getting ready to write his reply.

Larner · 5 June 2012 · Chapter 36: Luncheon Conversation (part 2)

Oh, but I love hearing the similarities between Tuk and these, his descendants! And I'm glad she sees him in Frodo and Bilbo. If only she could have met Merry and Pippin as well! Although I'm sure that in time she will meet our Sam!

Author's reply

She will meet Sam in time; I don't suppose that's a spoiler at all. I hope my readers will have fun in these next few chapters in picking out the Tookish traits and in guessing who is the ancestor of whom. (Although through the centuries there will be more than a little intermingling of these various descendants).

Larner · 5 June 2012 · Chapter 39: Adamanta's Children: Addie

What a lovely description of the child, and somehow she reminds me very much of Frodo. But the Fallohide strain was strong in the Tooks and in Frodo as well, of course.

Author's reply

The Fallohide strain will show its influence among all of these children and their descendants. Of course, in "my" universe, Frodo is a throwback to almost the pure Fallohide type; he got just the right combination of genes through his various relations who all had part of the Fallohide strain in them to come together in him. In fact my idea of Tuk is that he looks exactly like his descendant Frodo except for the color of his eyes, which are brown. (The notion being that the lighter eye-colors found among the gentry are a result of Adamanta's influence.)

Larner · 5 June 2012 · Chapter 38: Adamanta's Children: Raz

Ah, he sounds like quite the scamp, and so much like we imagine Pippin in many ways!

Author's reply

so much like we imagine Pippin in many ways *grin* Yes, you see proto-Took here! Pay close attention to the children's names and to the birth order of Adamanta's sons and daughters and their descriptions...

Larner · 5 June 2012 · Chapter 37: Adamanta's Children: Briar Rose

Friends have said similarly. And how delightful, the relationship between Briar Rose and her parents!

Author's reply

It is a common reaction! And I hope that you will see the pattern in Adamanta and Tuk's children...

Andrea · 27 October 2011 · Chapter 37: Adamanta's Children: Briar Rose

Nice to learn more about Adamanta's children! She learned to speak early, but she was not talkative Well, I know at least one of Briar Rose's great-great-...-great-nephews who has definitely NOT inherited that quality ;-) Let's see how her siblings are characterised. I'm really curious!

Author's reply

I think you will have fun picking out the various qualities we see in a few of the hobbits we are more familiar with. Pay close attention to the birth order and the names-- you will see a pattern!

Antane · 26 October 2011 · Chapter 37: Adamanta's Children: Briar Rose

I love Adamanta being described as a hobbit, found that touching. She had an interesting daughter, didn't she? Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author's reply

Now that she has Frodo and Bilbo in her life, I think she will spend most, if not all, of her time clad as a hobbit. It's how she feels most comfortable. I think all of her children were probably interesting with such parents! But we'll see what you think as you meet the rest!

GamgeeFest · 25 October 2011 · Chapter 37: Adamanta's Children: Briar Rose

How fun to hear Adamanta talk about her children. Briar Rose sounds like a wise young lass.

Author's reply

I think she must be! And of course, she's the eldest of a soon-to-be-large brood, so she will probably have more wisdom thrust upon her...

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 25 October 2011 · Chapter 37: Adamanta's Children: Briar Rose

I wonder if little Briar Rose was named so to appease her grandmother as to the quick proposal? Heh! =) I wonder what her grandparents thought of her! I am eagerly waiting to hear all about her five sisters and six brothers, and their children!!! Kaylee

Author's reply

Possibly! There's a lot we will miss of the backstory due to the 300 word count restriction on the chapters. Which means there may be some side-stories once this one's finished! But we will get to meet each and every one of Adamanta's children in *this* story, I promise!

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 25 October 2011 · Chapter 36: Luncheon Conversation (part 2)

Yes, indeed! I'm sure we'd all love to hear about Adamanta's children (at least I know I would, but then I'm a genealogy fanatic...and I love my food...I must be half Elf, half Hobbit! Hehe!) Kaylee

Author's reply

Thank you so much, Kaylee, for the lovely family tree! I hope to enlighten everyone about the children of Adamanta and Tuk!

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 25 October 2011 · Chapter 35: Luncheon Conversation (part 1)

The food was varied and delicious; there were soups of clear broths, salads of young vegetables, cheeses, stuffed eggs, and yeasty smelling breads of many shapes and hues and in honor of the hobbit guests, a huge platter of mushrooms, all of it served with a pale golden mead that tasted of heather. I would say, would you please stop making me hungry, but if you did that you would have to stop writing Hobbits, and we can't have THAT! LOL! Lovely descriptions, as always! Kaylee

Author's reply

LOL! I don't think I'd be able to stop anyhow; food and hobbits just go together!

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 25 October 2011 · Chapter 34: A Mother is a Mother Still

What a sweet memory, Dreamflower! I wonder what exactly brought it to the fore?

Author's reply

I think it has to do with Adamanta's similarities to his own mother-- it's bringing her to the forefront of his mind.

Kaylee Arafinwiel · 25 October 2011 · Chapter 33: An Introduction

Of course! Who DOESN'T know her great-grandsons! How wonderful that she'd introduce them in that fashion! And I love her remarks to Galadriel! I am, as you know, a huge Galadriel fan! (Well, obviously! Hehe!) Kaylee

Author's reply

Of course they know them! Adamanta was, I think, staking a claim, LOL!
