*ROFL*
Larner, that was priceless! All these wizards, arguing about cooking! *snicker*
It reminded me so much of Asterix – the one where all the druids meet to a competition in brewing potions. Only this time it’s chili, not potions, and the winner was Frodo, not Miraculix. *Of course* Frodo had to win – how can any wizard think to be a better cook than a hobbit? Even Dumbledore, Merlin and Gandalf together couldn’t beat him. Not with mushrooms in it *grin* - being able to do magic isn’t enough!
Now I’m imagining Frodo and Sam giving cooking lessons to wizards and elves alike for the rest of their life on Tol Eressëa!
Thank you, this brightened a grey, rainy day considerably!
Author's reply
Well, what else do famous wizards throughout the omniverse argue about, other than the best chili recipe? I can't think what sparked this one--it just sneaked up on me, I fear; but somehow it went along with pizza and surfboarding. Am so glad it gave so many a good laugh. Our weather has finally cleared after a week of grey, and I sort of needed a laugh as well.
Yes, Asterix and the druids' potion-brewing competition--it's been a long time since I read that one. Heh!

And they thought Frodo's chili was good! What a cute story - of course a hobbit would win - I love the idea of watching him cook.

Well, of COURSE a Hobbit would win that contest! Who else?
And glad it gave you a chuckle!

Oh my, such a surprise! And what a tasty one--now I'm hungry! *teehee* But is it really not gonna happen? Awwwww....Have to admit, Red Cloud sounds kinda sexy;);) Pity Dumbledore won't get to stick around forever, when Sauron changes his name to "Voldemort" and makes a comeback.........oh well!
Terrific piece, thanks! LOLOL And I imagine Sam is gonna really enjoy himself once he gets used to the idea! lol

Well, it MIGHT have happened--we don't really know, of course.
So, you're drawn to Red Cloud, are you? And not Ptolemy?
You're welcome! As for Sam--at least he knows his beloved friend has his sense of mischief back! Heh!

"...a twisting in the fabric of the space-time continuum from having brought so much focus of pathos to one place." BWAHAHAHA!
Love this, Larner...and that it's in the Jasper Fforde wing is just perfect. Would love to see Frodo find himself in the Library, talking to the Unitary Authority of Warrington Cat. As it is, I think he's going to demand a wing all to himself, for Blameless Tragic Heroes Who Have Endured Unimaginable Suffering That No One Else Can Possibly Understand.
MEFA duties have once again left me woefully behind on reading, but this was a quick, fun diversion!
Author's reply
So glad you had time to read this, Inkling. Loved finding ways to reference Fforde, Pratchet, and a few others here along the way. And the particular wing where he might have dwelt--that itself is just priceless!
As for finding oneself hopelessly behind in reading--Oh, do I know that one. And those that appear here are intended as quick diversions, after all.

*Falls over laughing* That was absolutely brilliant! Poor Gilderoy! That should teach him to study the circumstances of his new would-be employer, first. *Snort*
Great idea! Love it!
Author's reply
Yes--that would be something to see, wouldn't it--Gilderoy Lockheart assuming all will welcome him on the basis of his own self-promotion and his five-time winner of the Witch Weekly Most Charming Smile Award! I'd just been listening to the Jim Dale reading of "Chamber of Secrets" again, and this one appeared to be dying to be written. Heh!

Lovely choice of tragic characters. I'm off to Derby for the day tomorrow for a meeting so I might spend the three hour drive contemplating who else he might have met! Perhaps the odd red-shirted security type from Star Trek?
Currently listening to HP again prior to the last book coming out!
Author's reply
Glad you approve! It was fun for me trying to figure out who might have been included. And certainly the security folk from Star Trek did tend to have a remarkably high mortality rate!
I've been tempted to reread book five over the next few trips to work and back myself in anticipation of the movie, followed by six in anticipation of the book. Although each time I face Dumbledore's fall it shakes me. But phoenix song was involved--it must mean something!

How about Frodo and Feanor meeting? Now that I would like to see, both being possessed by their possessions. I've got an idea about that, but it's a very shy bunny who normally like to do nothing but hide under the bed.

p.s. would have to add my Denny to the list, the "alternate reality" Denny, that is, except that he'd be cracking jokes and punning and teaching the youngsters how to gamble and quite disrupting the place. Perhaps it's a good thing after all that he wasn't killed off in "Glisters".

Larner, the ideas you come up with for this one are priceless! By the time I reached Cedric I was laughing, and couldn't truly stop during the rest of the fic.
Nasty thing to do--kill me just like that before I’d had a chance to be taken by that Ring, after all *snicker* What a thing to complain about! Every sensible hobbit should have been *glad* about it!
Hmmm ... why do I get the feeling Frodo will not be very happy there and go on soon, save he gets to know some who suffered at the hands of Sauron and Morgoth, too, and not only had to look pitiful to get there? After his talk with Tiny Tim and the Little Match Girl he has to feel rather out of place!
Author's reply
So glad this gave you a good laugh. Sometimes absurd thoughts hit me, and this one's been working on me for several days.
I get the feeling Deagol's not too terrifically bright--please forgive him! ;->

Poor Frodo; this bunch of hapless innocents isn't up to snuff, or so he thinks.
Though he might be unwise to make condescending remarks that include "Miss Nienor", considering who her brother is. I wouldn't want Turin angry with me, even in the Halls of Mandos.
Perhaps Mandos can set it up so that Frodo bunks with Finrod!
Author's reply
Actually, he never made a condescending remark toward Miss Nienor, particularly as it was Tiny Tim who used that title for her. Don't know that he felt these weren't up to snuff as much as the fact he had to go through SO much to get here, and all this poor kid had to do was appear pitiable! Although I'm certain you're right about Turin's likelihood of avenging any perceived slight toward his sister.
As for Frodo bunking with Finrod.... HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE! That would be something!

I'm with Frodo! *NOT* fair indeed! Perhaps he needs to have a chat with Dumbledore, who might remind him of Gandalf. Let's see--who's suffered a lot? Little Nell, maybe? Or Anakin Skywalker? Of course, he brought most of his suffering on himself, but I don't suppose he had it easty...
Of course! From his *own* universe: TURIN!

Uh-oh! *snicker* I know this is the anthology for your AUs, but I just *couldn't* imagine what was AU about this one--until the very end!
Poor Elanor! What a time she had! But it would be kind of interesting to see what the other children do while in the charge of their rather--unusual caretaker, LOL!
Author's reply
We know that only Sam, Rosie, and Elanor are reported to have gone, and that they returned with little Tolman in hand, but we don't truly know the disposition of the rest of the children while they were gone, of course. And as Nanny McPhee has been knocking at my door with increasing insistence lately, plot bunny in hand, I found this insisted on being written. So glad you enjoyed it.

Wonderful, Larner! Poor Elanor...doomed by good and responsible behavior! My grandkids (five lovely darlins' from ages 12 to 2 years) have engaged in the same games, ganging up on the one in favor. *sighs in fond exasperation* Aren't kids great??
I, for one, would love to see this scenario played out - maybe with the Valar noting Lord Perhael's difficulties with his offspring and sending a Maia in the guise of Nanny McPhee to sort the children out! After all, Sam won't accept honor (or if he does, only grudgingly)...I would love to see his face when he returns to a changed household! LOL *sends a bunny or two scampering Larner's way* I even have a birthday...sometime...:-) *bats eyes entreatingly* (just kidding...well...sort of.....)
Great story..full of potential...see what you have reduced me to?
Linda
Author's reply
Oh, Linda, it's great to hear from you again! We didn't tend to do this, but I've certainly heard of families where it was done regularly to send a child to Coventry (one of the official titles for shunning someone in this manner). The others aren't being fair, of course, and it's certainly not Elanor's fault the rest of them are in trouble.
To go through the rest of the story would necessitate posting on another site, and of course I'll consider it, but I do have so many legitimate plot bunnies and nuzguls working at me! The newest nuzgul at least isn't shaming himself by wearing false ears, but is perched atop the bookcase that holds the true-crime collection, and it's proving hard to resist him right now and get on with the Tenant and Rings!
