One quibble--seems the Gaffer is in two places at once, one moment advising Sam to keep his cloak fastened as he sits at a booth, and the next being waved at as he speaks with the healer. Or is the healer sitting by him at the booth?

Sorry if it wasn't clear that time had passed. I tried to show the passage of time by talking about the leisurely shopping and cart-loading that was going on. The Gaffer had wandered down the street by then!

This is truly going to be one of my favorite stories from you, I suspect. I just love seeing the hobbits through the rangers' eyes and being a private witness to the goings-on of Hobbiton and Bywater. You do know your hobbits. And of course, this chapter literally ended with a bang---I am dumbstruck at the idea of delicious Aragorn h/c and delicious Frodo h/c both at the same time! It's chilling that this happened during the most innocent outing. Nobody will be expecting such a thing---in a way, the hobbits' innocence about weapons is coming back to haunt them, isn't it?
And it's just perfect, having Aragorn grabbing Frodo and most likely saving his life. Another bond between them. :) Now I'm on pins and needles, needing chapter three, of course.

Yikes! That was quite a description of the explosion, and then to have something hit him from behind as the ground rushed up to hit him from in front!! EEEE!! Not good! And... um.... hopefully poor wee Frodo isn't going to get squished between hard ground and harder *hmmmmm, pauses a moment to contemplate* Ranger!?
I love Halbarad, I love Sam's rendition of his old Gaffer, and especially I like Sam backpedaling as he sees he's worried Frodo with his descriptions of the birthing process. *giggles* I'm sure Sam's seen it plenty, but I guess maybe Frodo's missed the "messy" parts, hmm?
Ok... bring on the cuddling! *calls first shift for Ranger/hobbit cuddling*

And I'm going to be leaving soon to be gone all summer long, so it's likely I'm going to miss the rest of this till I get back! Oh, that is *evil*! *gives you the begging pup look* Oh, please update soon, pleeeeease? *sigh* Oh, well, this just gives me one more reason to write a story full of cliff-hangers, to put all those who ever tormented me with them through the agony! *grin*
"Scrap o' dog..." awww that's cute. I'd love to see the Gamgees get a pup. They just need to bring Gaffer into Bag End and "show" him the puppies, and then one could be really loving, and one of the kids could give him the begging look, and I bet he'd give in. :)
This is a charming Shire market. I just hope nobody got too seriously hurt!
