Pearl Took · 11 December 2005 · Chapter 8: Reality Bites
It's a good thing for Penny that she is into the languages more than I am :) :) She managed a lot more than I would have.

Perfect!! How far would re-enactors go? To the point of a broken nose? This is sooooo good :) :)
daw the minstrel · 11 December 2005 · Chapter 23: So Long, Farewell...
How hard. Emotional things are tough enough without the added complications here.
daw the minstrel · 11 December 2005 · Chapter 22: A Friend In Need
Poor Penny. Knowing Halbarad's fate would be hard indeed because she got attached to him before she fully realized what was happening.
Bodkin · 11 December 2005 · Chapter 24: ... Auf Wiedersehen, Adieu!
What a difficult farewell. And they will be bound to resent her silence at times - when something particularly awful has happened. However much they know she is right to keep quiety about the outcomes.
Bodkin · 11 December 2005 · Chapter 23: So Long, Farewell...
Well. I'm glad she got that message across to Halbarad. And I suspect having told someone will be a huge relief. Even if it's only one thing of many.
Bodkin · 11 December 2005 · Chapter 22: A Friend In Need
I love Penny's fractured Sindarin. And her sudden realisation of the true difficulty facing Arwen - as a real person, one she knew. Not to mention confronting the fate of Halbarad and Boromir. She's settling in nicely though.
meckinock · 10 December 2005 · Chapter 6: Pennies Dropping
So Penny and Halbarad are still taking turns weirding the pants off each other. "Nazgul" sure got his attentin! But it was sweet of him to nurse her when she was sick.
Pearl Took · 10 December 2005 · Chapter 3: The Horror of Bree
"He thought he was a bloody Ranger. My God. Historical reconstructionists were bad enough. She of all people should know. But reconstructing a world that never existed...! She roared with laughter at him and Halbarad just stared at her in disbelief." Wonderful!! This is very theraputic :)
Pearl Took · 10 December 2005 · Chapter 1: You Have To Be Kidding
Ok . . . I'm hooked. This is delightful :) :) I was thinking this better be good if she's made an exception for it - and it is very good. Well Done, Boz4PM!! EEEEWWWW!!!! Leeches!!
Bodkin · 10 December 2005 · Chapter 21: The Prodigal Son
The idea of trying to use a cut-throat razor on various regions of the body is quite scary. I'm surprised the elves don't have a herbal paste that can solve the problem for her. Perhaps someone should think about it. And set up an industry in the post-war Minas Tirith. Arwen could see to it. And the conversation with Legolas must have been fascinating. I'm not surprised she wants to keep the results to herself. And the Boromir conversation - (do you think he would make a good PM? I think he might be a bit too authoritarian, myself. Not too accustomed to working with elected representatives.) - the I-love-another conversation. Poor Penny. Hard when you know he's doomed. Doooomed. He's dooooooomed, Captain Mainwaring.
Bodkin · 10 December 2005 · Chapter 19: Another Fine Mess
Yes, Penny. Chickens come with feathers. There are cultures that would slot into Middle Earth reasonably well - as far as the practical side of life goes, anyway. But western city-dweller ain't one of them. I like it that Legolas is observant enough to know something's wrong with her - and it's not so hard getting it across to him, since Elrond and Mithrandir believe her.
daw the minstrel · 10 December 2005 · Chapter 21: The Prodigal Son
Loved the way you dodged the Legolas questions! I guess Penny would smell by our standards with no deodorant and all that physical labor and the difficulty in bathing.
Bodkin · 10 December 2005 · Chapter 20: Open Mouth, Change Feet
Poor Penny. Trying to avoid the Son of Gondor - and now he thinks she fancies him. And he's being kind. It's almost enough to make you want to go up to the big lug and tell him he's not long for the world. I don't blame her for putting the linguistic boot in on Lindir. Bad enough being embarrassed in the first place - with a sight that could cause hot flushes and nightmares - but to have the elf harping on about it! Good bit of ammunition provided by Arwen there.

I don't blame her for putting the linguistic boot in on Lindir. Bad enough being embarrassed in the first place - with a sight that could cause hot flushes and nightmares - but to have the elf harping on about it! It also sets up the basis of their friendship - an important element in the sequel.
Bodkin · 10 December 2005 · Chapter 18: Sense and Sensibilities
Oh my. Hearing the tale of The Hobbit from Bilbo, Gandalf, Gloin and Legolas. Couldn't be better.
Bodkin · 10 December 2005 · Chapter 17: Beauties and Nincompoops
Have you seen the beautiful girl / handsome boy - come up for coffee ad? Where she eats Marmite and he makes like she tastes of poison? Poor Penny. A male elf overdose. Some people live through intolerable hardship.
Bodkin · 10 December 2005 · Chapter 16: The Mirror Cracked From Side to Side
Poor Erestor! He probably didn't know where to put himself!
Bodkin · 10 December 2005 · Chapter 15: DO Balrogs Have Wings?
Pen-ii's ability to deal with Frodo could be read by those in the know that he's going to come out of this . . . maybe. Although I'm pretty sure Gandalf can read her fairly well anyway. For the first time she was pleased to be here. Really, REALLY pleased to be here. Finding out all this detail would make it all worthwhile. Though, of course, should she return knowing it all, it would be meaningless - because she would be locked in a closed ward!
Bodkin · 10 December 2005 · Chapter 14: The Complete Set
Virtually none of her 21st skills have any use. And all those things like sewing and weaving and doing things with unconsidered bits of animal left-over are much more valuable. I like Legolas being nothing special. In Elven terms, anyway. And agree with avoiding poor Boromir - although it could be a bit obvious.
Bodkin · 10 December 2005 · Chapter 13: A Square Peg
So she would have to try and remember that that meant ‘come in’. Not ‘please dither about outside my door like a complete idiot’. And what is the Sindarin for the second? It could come in useful!
daw the minstrel · 9 December 2005 · Chapter 16: The Mirror Cracked From Side to Side
This chapter reminds me of an essay I once read talking about all the work that used to be involved in a simple thing like fixing a cup of tea--hew the wood, lay the fire, fetch the water, etc. Life was hard!
phoenix23531 · 9 December 2005 · Chapter 14: The Complete Set
Eep, and I forgot one thing for last chapter: what did Gandalf REALLY tell Penny to tell Elrohir... muahahaha~ Hehehe, oh the old testicle dish. Reminds me of the joke from Spain where they serve the bull's testicles as a delicacy. One day they're really small, and the diner asks why. The waiter says, "Well, sometimes the bull, he wins." Bad, I know, but always brings a chuckle. Penny's Sindarin lessons seem to be coming along far better than my own ever did. Understanding the grammar jargon is the worst part of learning it. I'd be interested to see how she deals with sentance structure and plural adjectives. Poor Erestor, does he know what he's getting into? I also loved that Penny is avoiding Boromir. Yep, if I knew someone was going to die & couldn't do anything to prevent it that's pretty much what I'd do. Still, I feel sorry for him, not knowing why she's avoiding him. Ah, well. congrats on another wonderful chapter. All the best, phoenix23531
phoenix23531 · 9 December 2005 · Chapter 13: A Square Peg
Ok, I remembered the review button this time. :-) Halbarad's "I don't know what she just said but she sounded just like my mother!" was priceless. I love the 'universality' of language, don't you. And the fact that it reminded Glorfindel of Elrond had me hooting. This chapter was wonderful, and I love that Penny is adjusting. As for the Aragorn and Co. leaving immediately, I have to go back and check on the wording when I get home, but if it says immediately, that can actually be quite subjective. Especially given that they are in an elven (and therefore 'timless') realm. Can't remember the exact way it's written, but I always got the impression that they left immediately = the day after, since the Council went on for ages and they would then need time to prepare their gear and routes and all. So I wouldn't be too worried about your suggestion. Just the logistics would require them to spend at least a day and even two days after. *rubs hands together* and now I can press the 'next' button. Weeee!
daw the minstrel · 8 December 2005 · Chapter 15: DO Balrogs Have Wings?
Penny's learning fast. I can see why they'd be fascinated by her too. So she's enforcing the Prime Directive? That's smart. And while it's true she may have no useable skills in their world, they'd be pretty lost in hers too.
Kitty · 8 December 2005 · Chapter 12: All Hell Breaks Loose
Penny did a great job in explaining all of this. I had wondered how on earth she would be able to explain anything with no knowledge of Westron or Sindarin and a story much too complicated to be told only with gestures. The idea with the timeline is great! Well, now they know. It should be a relief to poor Penny - they will understand her behaviour much better now.
