That had been ill news indeed that Gildor had brought him: the Nine riding once more. He shook his head. And now strange incomprehensible women appearing from nowhere. *snork* This is proceeding nicely! I, unlike Bodkin, have not read this elsewhere, so I am all the more looking forward to the next update. The only jarring note is that I doubt that water from a water-skin would taste all that fresh and sweet. To my recollection, there would be a tang of leathery taste, and the water would not taste "cool and fresh", no matter how delectable the spring he filled the skin from was. Having "roughed it" in my youth am finding this story a blast. (As I sit in my heated home with a cup of steaming tea at my elbow, anticipating hot breakfast)

Thank you for that comment - as and when I get a chance to edit (I am in the throes of the sequel at the moment and have limited computer time), I will change that bit. :) Glad you are enjoying it so far.

Why him? Now you have me wondering what other lunatics Halbarad has rescued. Women in distress? Hal, you really ought to listen to the Elves. Would it kill you to carry a packet of salt in your pack? Salt doesn't weigh all that much and a pinch goes a long way.

you've left me laughing. Very authentic! And the little "Mary Sue" at the beginning only serves to spotlight the contrast. Poor Halbarad! (I wonder what he would do if, like "Crocodile Dundee", he were suddenly thrust into the modern world. Why do I fear he wouldn't fare well, probably end up in a straight-jacket in some mental institution?)

Leeches. Can things get worse? .... Yes, I think they can!

Author's reply

Oh, indeed they can, and still are doing so in the sequel. I have very evil plans afoot, precious... very evil indeed. *grins*

There is something about Halbarad's ineptness with cuisine that is remarkably amusing. Would it hurt him to carry some seasoning? Except in his masculinity.

Oh I am so pleased to see this! It's absolutely brilliant! I read the whole thing - and as much of the next as is written - when Nilmandra recommended it and it is an absolute delight. Poor Penny. Even poorer Halbarad. He must think he's in the middle of a nightmare. Just as she does, of course. I look forward to reading this again. I spent far too much time reading it last week and now I can repeat the process rather more slowly.
