Hm..well, all and all, his situation seemed somewhat improved. A terrific chapter. :-)
Author's reply
I like your term 'somewhat improved'. I think if I had the choice between being eaten and being crushed instantly, I'd take the latter. Of course, Legolas doesn't know that the howlers would be eating him alive. But even not knowing that, I still think I'd choose the rock. :o)
Thank you.

I want to say to Legolas, "scream again so they can find you" but if he does that will alert the howlers and thats not good at all. Great chapter. More soon.

That would be great advice, if he didn't have gruesome creatures looking for him. However, the kind of pain he's in doesn't always give you a choice. :o)

· Chapter 10
It must be sort of dead - because once they bite it off the living creature, it's not strictly speaking . . . What a gruesome set of howlers you have invented. The sort of creature that wakes you up at night with nasty dreams.
Poor Aragorn - wallowing in guilt about it being his fault (true, in a way). If they had only responded more quickly to that cry and found poor L. Now they've taken his knives (although I suppose he didn't actually have them, so it's not that much of a problem - yet). They didn't find Legolas's bow - but I can't see him being able to use that, even if a howler was to hand it over with a polite bow and offer to do a William Tell.
The wound is currently being a plus point - and possibly the freezing weather will hold back the spread of infection, but he does need treatment - and with E2A aka E3 traipsing off back down the morning, the only current help around is equipped with nasty sets of teeth that look on our hero as lunch.
Get that elf some help! Soon - before he a) freezes b) gets gangrene c) is found by the howlers or d) is used as a trap.
Author's reply
Not to be too gruesome, but I pictured the howlers layiing into their living meals so fast and furious that they would consume a good deal before their poor prey died. Sorry about that image. That would probably give anyone nightmares.
Good points about Legolas's weapons. You are right. He couldn't have used his bow with his infected shoulder and could probably only manage one knife. Right now, being unarmed is the least of his problems.
Surely you don't think E3 will get away. I think, I hope, you know me better than that.
Great choices. I think I'd opt for becoming an elfcicle, to save myself from choices b, c, and d.

*sniff* The first part of this chapter, with Aragorn and the twins so distraught over the 'death' of their friend was wonderfully sad. If only Elladan had looked more closely at that rock! If only they had turned back when they heard the cry!
I find myself hoping that Elladan, Elrohir and Aragorn are captured by the howlers - if they leave the mountain, Legolas has no chance. And he's unarmed, since Aragorn took his knives back with him :(
Great chapter!

Thank you. I was going for intense grief all the way. Yes, if only...
Something happens in the next chapter, which was foreshadowed at the very beginning of the story, that will change everything.

Well that was a nasty thought at the end: Howlers don't eat dead meat.
You toyed with us there, White Wolf! Letting us think that they might find Legolas and then making them not do it. Maybe it's for the best though if the howlers are watching them.
Author's reply
That *was* nasty, wasn't it? I don't want people thinking that because the howlers were once men, there is any humanity left in them. I want them to be pure...uh...nastiness.
A bit of toying is fun. As for the howlers, they are always watching. No one has ever escaped them. We'll have to see how this expedition turns out.

No, he's not dead yet, you idiots!!!! :) I understand that sentiment has been expressed before. :)
Poor poor baby.....but I'm no mathematics major; I hate Algebra, so I'm just going to leave those numbers alone.
Hm...did *all* the howlers leave to look for Legolas? If not, E, E & A could be in trouble. But then what?
So...you said Legolas would be sorry he didn't take the cloth...is that because then A and the twins wouldn't have thought he was dead? Or is the blood on the cloth contaminated by some poison in Legolas' blood? In that case, Aragorn could get really sick from pressing it against his forehead. Oh, the possibilities are endless.
More soon!
Author's reply
Yes. Isn't it fun when we know something the characters don't? I couldn't resist doing that. Aragorn does guilt sooo well.
I know from experience how high your 'poor babies' can go. Let's just say they are out of sight. :o)
You will find out what happens with AE2 and the howlers. I can say no more.
That idea of contaminated blood on the piece of unic is an interesting one. I hadn't thought of that, so of course, that isn't it. It was just a means of letting AE2 think Legolas is dead. They find more 'proof' in the next chapter.

YOU'RE JUMPING TO CONCLUSIONS, E2A!! A bit of cloth is, at best, a piece of circumstantial evidence.
Do you think they heard? I don't think even elves can afford to drop off to sleep in the snow when they are injured - don't say that looking forward to the howlers finding Legolas still alive is the best we can hope for.
Author's reply
They did jump to the wrong conclusion, however it will be re-enforced shortly with another piece of circumstantial evidence.
No, I don't think they did. The way I see it, there are four choices: Legolas's friends find him, the howlwers find him, he escapes or he dies. one good and three bad. (Even if he escapes,he may not survive the infection and the snow by himself.)

Oh dear. I realised about halfway through what the significance of that scrap of cloth must be. How horrible for Aragorn and the twins - and if they believe Legolas dead, they won't look for him anymore, will they? And he is now fast asleep, hidden from view, in the falling snow.
This Does Not Look Good :(
Jay
Author's reply
I'm glad you realized the significance of the torn fabric. It seemed the most logical way for A&2E to think they had lost Legolas. No they won't look for him.
Legolas hid himself too well, I'm afraid. As you say, it does not look good.

Bad place to end it! Legolas is doing so well by getting loose from the tie to the wall, but these guards look like a different story. I was also interested in the speculation about what was causing the infection.
Author's reply
Oh shucks. I rather liked where I ended the chapter. :o) It's amazing what a wounded and sick elf can do, when he knows he's on the menu of his captors. Getting away will be another matter. I said the blood and bite would be significant. Legolas's fate may hinge on them.

I'm not happy about this! How is the poor elf going to escape from the creepy creatures when he is coming down with potential gangrene! E2A need to get there and rescue him. Mind you, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't end up chained to the same wall.
And there must be MORE TO IT THAN THAT. Even if they fish him out there are going to be long-term problems from him having been creepy creature's lunch-time snack, I'm sure of it.
Author's reply
That's a very good question. I hope Aragorn brought his athelas, providing he even *finds* Legolas. We'll have to see whether or not E2A can avoid being captured.

Freaky freaky freaky! Nice, lovely Legolas angst!! :P
I hope A, E&E aren't stupid enough to get caught too. They don't, do they? Oh dear, you aren't going to answer that question, are you?
The whole thing with the blood and stuff makes me feel absolutely sick. And I didn't even swallow it! I can't wait to know what it's full significance is.
Hm....I'm getting a really awful thought...what if the ingestion of the blood starts to trasform Legolas into a howler? That would explain the absence of other people on the mountain, and it would explain the ability to speak Westron. Sorry, thinking out loud. :P

Glad ;you like the angst. There's more in store for our dear elf.
No, I'm not.
Being bitten and then swallowing howler blood is not a good thing, I can tell yo that. It *is* sickening, isn't it?

You and me both. All questions will be answered before the end of the story.

Your idea of Legolas being able to understand the howlers because of swallowing the blood is an interesting one. I hadn't thought of that, so of course, that means that isn't the answer. The blood and the bite *are* significant, however.

I really don't like the sound of those nasty creatures - they sounded fairly yuk, moving to very yuk when they showed their teeth and mega-yuk when Legolas tasted them. I'm rather worried that swallowing yukky-creature juice might do unpleasant things to our wonder-elf. Not to mention having been munched by one.
Elrohir, Elladan and Aragorn need to come to the rescue pretty darned soon if you ask me.
