The Barn  by Dot 12 Review(s)

In all of the sadness and the melancholy of the story, what shines through at the end is hope. And hope is everything. No matter how bad the days may seem and how hard the circumstances maybe there is something greater than ourselves out there, a hope of things unseen - though in this case, they are given a glimmer of hope in things seen. This is where the longevity of the else comes in, They have seen so much and been through so much, that they can offer so much. I really like that in the story, that they restore hope through their simple kind actions. It is so wonderful to see how much you have grown as a writer, how much story you convey in so short a time and space. Thank you for thinking of me.

Author Reply: I'm so glad that hope is what you took from it because that's what I intended. I wanted to show the reality of the lives people were living but how the kindness of others can set them back on a path where they can move forward. As you say, the elves can offer hope in whatever form it is needed, and I think they would.

It really pleases me that you enjoyed it :-)

The melancholy tone of this story is quite Tolkienish. Horror over what's been done to people they love mixed with love and care for baby Carin. I don't know how any parent puts something like that behind them, but apparently a lot of people do. And kindness must help, especially kindness from elves!

The decrepit barn sounds like one on my grandfather's farm. Here the broken boards make me think of broken bodies, which I guess is what Alen thinks too. But, ack! The rope. Thank the Valar Glorindel showed up when he did.

Innocents taken to play their part in something that has nothing to do with them.

If that doesn't just sum up what happens in war when powerful people decide everyone and everything else is a pawn.

Also I liked the dog that was afraid of cats.

Wonderful tone and voice, Dot. Great story.

Author Reply: Glorfindel had to show up - it's Nilmandra's birthday!

Thank you so much for your kind words. Ordinary people always seem to interest me in stories so I thought I'd try something simple. I'm with you - I don't know how people keep going in that circumstance. I guess I was trying not to have an ending where it was all miraculously fine. But hope is important and I thought the elves - and he who is full of joy - could give them that.
