Ok, in my head now, Ithilden gets passed down as a family name for that little family of villagers. And Rodda's wife loves the sound of the name Annael for a boy and so that name starts to get used in Esgaroth as well. So basically gradually over time elvish names become more and more common among humans.

This was so great! I don't know what's wrong with me, but I love seeing Turgon annoy Ithilden. I just find a frustrated Ithilden so entertaining because he's usually able to order the world so very easily.

I hope that Legolas/Annael/Turgon did get to see Rodda again eventually

Author Reply: What a great idea about the names! Hey, maybe if you go back far enough, Alice and daw are elvish names too. :-)

I'm with you on how much fun it is to annoy Ithilden, especially when he can't do anything about it. Turgon just doesn't care.

Thanks for the review, Alice.

After years, literally years, of lurking on SOA (though not much recently) this new story has prompted me to register a user name so I can leave a review. I should've done it long ago, but busy with life...blah, blah, blah...there's really no excuse. Well, it's not exactly a review, it's a thank you for sharing your time, talent, and the wonderful characters you've created. I read, and thoroughly enjoyed, your stories years and years ago. For some reason, I was drawn back to SOA recently and what do I find? New work from Daw! I didn't realize how much I've missed Elian, Ithilden and the rest of Legolas's family. This story has prompted me to reread all your stories, which I've just started. They're as delightful as I remember them. Maybe even more so because I'm taking my time and not speeding through them just to see what happens next. One last thing...MORE, please! :)

Author Reply: Holy crow, this is very nice! I missed writing about these guys too. It's hard though because I've already written so much, as you are undoubtedly finding.

And some of what you'll find was the first fiction I ever wrote, so it's rough. Occasionally I consider deleting a story or two, but I can't bring myself to do it.

I have one story in mind. I have to fit it around some other writing I need to get done, but it'll be there eventually, I think.

Thank you for taking the time to tell me this.

I remember telling my children that this was the description of adulthood to which I subscribed. They are now in mid-forties, and they are still such children at times!

Love how the need to protect has been described here.

Author Reply: Maybe we're all such children at times! I find it very hard to be the adult sometimes, myself.

It's always seemed to me that children deserve adult protection. Animals seem to feel that need to protect the young instinctively.

Wow, daw, we should make Nilmandra have a birthday every week if this is the kind of story we can expect out of you. I laughed so hard at Legolas's frustration with being treated like an elfling. I thought I missed Eilian the most, but it seems I missed Ithilden (big Ithilden, not Squirt Ithilden) even more. And Thanduil, trying to wrangle them all. Your action scenes are really tight; I suppose they always were but these were especially good. Legolas's reunion with Squirt Ithilden and his parents (and big Ithilden's shock at knowing he has a namesake) were really touching, as was the discussion of what makes a grownup and Legolas's surprise at learning he has crossed some kind of threshold he didn't see in front of him. Thank you for one more outing with these wonderful characters.

Author Reply: I'm glad you enjoyed it.

It took me a while to appreciate Ithilden. Oddly, I was thinking of him, Eilian, and Legolas last week when I was reading THE OUTSIDERS. It's that same dynamic of three brothers, an oldest responsible one, a second sociable one, and a youngest more sensitive baby. Maybe it's some sort of archetype.

What a terrific adventure! The one I feel sorry for is poor Rodda, who was probably looking forward to seeing his Elven friends again!

I love Legolas' name for the younger Ithilden, "Squirt Ithilden"! LOL!

And of course, Turgon was trouble...when was he ever not?

Author Reply: I wonder what this all looks like from Rodda's POV. Legolas and his buddies are still kids, and Rodda must see that. But still, they saved him at the worst moment of his life. So maybe not kids after all. Or not "just" kids.

Glad you liked it, Dreamflower.

This brings me such happiness! I loved seeing minor characters brought back into the light :)

Author Reply: I have minor characters galore. There's always one I can trot out. It drives me crazy sometimes actually.

Glad you liked it, Faith. It was fun to write.

I had to go skim some of the other stories to remember the situations where little Ithilden was born and Rodda met. I was thinking he was the little boy from the flooded settlement where Legolas met Tuilinn at first. .This is funny but I have to say that as I reach the ripe old age of 50 there's nothing I would rather be than "such an elfling" LOL. It was good to see the three brothers as well as the three feiends. You could really work this up into a full short story, there are so many great threads. This was a wonderful glimpse, thank you

Author Reply: I guess I've written a lot of little boys over the years, both Elven and Mannish. What I liked about the opening of this story was the idea of Eilian giving Legolas romantic advice. Thranduil would spit a molar if he knew.

You could really work this up into a full short story, there are so many great threads

This made me laugh. It is such a Nilmandra the Beta for Daw comment. You were always telling me I dropped threads and was in too big a hurry. I miss it.

Much love to you.

This becoming an adult thing is so much more an art than a science....

And how good to catch up on both Rodda and Squirt-Ithilden in one go!

Thank you.

Author Reply: Becoming an adult turns out to be really hard! LOL

I was happy when I figured out the relative ages of Rodda and Squirt-Ithilden. Legolas can contemplate a Man in comparison to whom he's still a child, and another who needs the protection all children deserve.

Glad you liked it.

Oh my, what a harrowing adventure for a youngling! "Squirt Ithilden" is adorable. I'm just completing a short tale about Legolas finding peace with entangling his heart with mortals, so I appreciate your story very much.

Author Reply: It's difficult to figure out how elven ages work, and then to fit them to friendships with mortals. Loss is inevitable, and it has to be so puzzling to elves, at least at first.

I love writing about little kids. I find them touching.

Glad you liked it.

Loved this! I grinned from start to finish. Even with the scary bits ;-)

Poor Legolas is so completely clueless about the ways of females and yet he's well able to cajole his father and, as it turns out, step up and take responsibility when needs be. Of course, Thranduil wouldn't have given in if he didn't want to. No matter how logical his three sons were being...

Oh, how wonderful to see them all. I think this is my favourite bit of the whole thing:
"I do what you tell me?" Eilian asked. "Or they do what I tell them?"

"You know what I meant," Ithilden said.

"I'm not sure I do," Eilian said.
LOL. I miss those two.

It did break my heart a bit to see Turgon and hear all the talk of him being a warrior. But I couldn't help laughing at him and Ithilden winding each other up. Poor Ithilden. I'm sure he'd rather a whole patrol to look after. Annael is lovely and sensible and kind as ever.

I love that Little Squirt Ithilden is not entirely unlike Real Ithilden in his exasperation at younger siblings not behaving as they should.

I have to say, my heart was in my mouth when they were trying to get away from the spider. Two brave kids. And Alitha! Lovely to see her again. How on earth did you think to re-visit them?

His brother's grip loosened, as did his clenched jaw. "Ithilden?" he repeated. "She really named him that?" *melts*

I could yap about this story all day but lucky for you, I'm in a rush :-) I don't know if you understand just how wonderful it is to be back amongst these characters again. It was a great story, full of fun and with the undercurrent of the threat to the forest and the warnings of friendships with mortals.

I'm sure Nilmandra will be thrilled.

Author Reply: I knew you wouldn't be thrilled by the spider stuff, but I needed danger, Dot! Legolas needed to be an aspiring hero and save someone younger.

I thought this story would be fun to write because everyone is younger, there are no wives or children, and it would be just the three brothers. But then the crowd kept growing. So I'm glad you were happy to see them all because sometimes I feel like my cast is as out of control as GRRM's.

Friendships with mortals must have been hard on elves. They're hard enough on fellow mortals.

Thanks for the beta read and the kind words, Dot.
