Elf Academy 3: The Enemy Within  by Fiondil 19 Review(s)

I'm so relieved that no one died. This glimpse (or maybe more than a glimpse) of Elrond is so telling -- he is wise, and humble, and probably more helpful than he'd give himself credit for.

How his sons must have missed him, over the centuries. I'm glad to see the family reunited, and do hope that Elrond and Celebrian can obtain "permanent visitors" status, and not get sent back with the rest.

As to the accident... and acceptance of the elves by the townspeople... and the upcoming election... Wheels within wheels within wheels. Nice bit of spinning. Looking forward to more.

Author Reply: Hi Lindelea. Yes, it is a relief that none of the children died. I'm glad you enjoyed this glimpse of one of our favorite Elves. Elrond is indeed wise and humble and we'll learn more about his time in Aman in the next chapter when he reveals to his sons what happened during his apprenticeship with Lord Irmo.

There are indeed wheels within wheels within wheels. I'm glad you're looking forward to more. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it.

Elrond in Wonderland... how very apt! I hope he will be allowed to stay, eventually. This word - and Wiseman in particular - could use someone "as kind as summer".

Author Reply: More correctly, Oz, as in the "Wizard of Oz" but the two places are certainly almost synonymous in the minds of many. And yes, they could all use someone "as kind as summer". Thanks for reading and reviewing, Soledad. I appreciate it.

Elrond is admirably adaptable in being able to rush off into a completely unfamiliar world and still keep his head. I doubt many, if any of the others could have done that with such aplomb. Not surprised he's so good with the little ones, as he has a huge advantage in having raised at least one and probably more than one Mortal through the ages. He proves to be so helpful and kind as always, and even useful in a way he can't understand yet, as Olórin says. I'm really excited to have him in Wiseman (if he does stay, and I'm guessing he will). There are plenty of people in Wiseman who can forcefully blast their way through rocky situations, but Elrond can be the water to wear down rock, as we see with the Stillmans.

What a horrible accident, certainly it's a good thing that it was all hands on deck.

I admit I have to wonder why, if the Maiar can't help, they brought several dozen warriors to ring around the camp? Or maybe they've designated that as holy ground of a sort, no trouble allowed, and it's the rest of the world that's hands-off?

Elrod the noble counselor, how about that, remove one letter and he's all set! Funny coincidence.

Heh, true, Elrohir's days of running off with his brother are numbered, maybe Glorfindel will feel a little bit of relief when he gets to hand the reins over to Serindë. He's her problem now. *grin*

Did you enjoy Yule in the barony? I'm more of a Charlie Brown Christmas girl, but that sounds like a lot of fun. Hope you have a great week, looking forward to more Elrond in the next chapter!

-Kevana

Author Reply: Hi Kevana. Well, I think it helps that he is actually returning to his birth world, so to speak, having been born in Middle-earth rather than in Valinor. So, I suspect he feels as if he's come home in a way. The Maiar are there to protect the encampment, but if the Elves venture forth from there then they are essentially on their own. Although, as we will see later on, that's not strictly true. The Valar are quite free to change the rules to suit themselves. *grin*

Anyway, I guess Elrohir's days of running off with his brother are indeed numbered, unless Serindë joins them. *grin*

I had a lovely time at the Yule festivities, thank you. Beside having venison stew, I got to try bear meatballs (from a real bear, btw,) with lingonberry sauce and also elk! as well as salmon. All typical Norse fare (it was a Norse-themed event).

Thanks for commenting. I appreciate you taking the time to do so.

"Elrond in Oz," indeed! LOL! In fact, he must have felt as if he'd stepped into the Twilight Zone. =)

The parents of those injured children are very fortunate, even though at least certain ones don't recognize it. Elrond's Song of Power was able to calm the children down. What did is something no mortal doctor would be able to do.

Elrond's got a lot to learn about the advances of medicine since his previous time on earth, doesn't he? He is, indeed, a master healer in his own right, and he has trained other master healers such as his sons and Aragorn, but modern medicine is something he knows nothing about. He's going to have to learn about germs, for one thing: what they are, how they cause disease, and how the body fights them.

One thing's for sure: if Elrond does stay, he won't be able to set up a retreat such as he had in Rivendell. He'll have to learn how to live in the modern world, and to do what he can to keep evil at bay without the aid of an Elvish Ring of Power. (At least, he won't have to worry about orcs or Ringwraiths anymore! =))

Author Reply: Hi KathyG. Elrond does have much to learn but he has much to teach as well, so it'll be a good trad-off. And I think he knows all about germs and such. Elvish medicine is quite advanced after all these ages and Elvish medical techniques are very effective and less invasive than most mortal medical techniques. Still, they don't have the same need to know about diseases that we have to deal with. At any rate, you're right that he will have to learn to live more closely with the Mortals if he stays. Edhellond will be as close to Imladris as he will ever get now, I think.

Thanks for taking the time to review. I much appreciate it.

I love seeing this through Elrond's eyes! What a perfect title for this chapter. To see his wonder and amazement at the modern world mortals have devised was such fun.

I liked the encounter with the Stillmans; clearly the missus has a lot more sense than her husband, and her priorities straight. Hopefully she will be able to influence his opinions. This event is going to polarize the community even more, but the help from the Elves is definitely going to sway a lot of the fence sitters.

Oliver Grey is such a good name for Olorin/Gandalf. And he was truly very helpful, but I think my favorite part was the Song that he used to calm the roomful of frightened parents and children. Truly a beautiful moment!

Elrond is going to have a lot to process. But I do hope he and Celebrian are going to be allowed to stay with their sons.

Author Reply: Hi Dreamflower. I thought the title appropriate. Glad you liked it. We'll see more of the Stillmans in the next chapter and their reactions to the three Elves as they check on the Stillmans' daughter.

I'm glad you like Olórin's mortal name. However, he didn't do the singing to calm the children; that was Elrond. Olórin just directed the parents to where their children could be found.

Anyway, Elrond does indeed have a lot to process and we'll see how things go with him and Celebrían. I doubt they will return to Valinor without a fight, not after being reunited with their sons after so long.

Thanks for leaving a comment. I appreciate it very much.

Lots of strange things for Elrond to see and experience in the modern world. I supect he feels as if he has fallen down the rabbit hole! ;-) And even though Elrond wasn't permitted to actually treat any of the accident victims, he was certainly useful when it came to calming the distraught children.

I see Elrond is already preparing to dig in his heels in preparation for the departure of the Valinorean wedding guests. And I suspect Celebrían is going to dig in her heels as right next to him, especially if she thinks tht there just might be daerelflings coming along in a few years!

Author Reply: Yes, it has to be very strange for him and even frightening on one level, but I'm sure he'll adapt soon enough as will Celebrían. I doubt either of them will go back to Valinor now that they are reunited with their sons. That's one battle the Valar will be wise to concede. *grin* Thanks for reviewing, Sunny. It's much appreciated.

Thank you so much for that detailed story from Elrond's POV. I was so looking forward to reading about his impressions of the modern mortal world and being reunited with his twin sons, but i didn't have much hope since there are so many arrivals and more important ones at that.

And indeed, I hope that the Valar will allow him and Celebrian to stay. His family has been in imcomplete for far too long. If nothing else, he will be a good healer and the need for healers is greater here than in the Blessed Realm especially when the war comes. Maybe the Elves can now set up their own clinic! Some Mortals may not be willing to have Elven physicians touch their kids, but Mrs. Stillman is right. And I'd prefer Elven healers any day of the week haha.

Author Reply: Hi Celeth. I'm glad you liked the detail from Elrond's POV and we'll continue with him and his sons in the next chapter. I know many readers were anxious to see him reunited with his sons so I decided to devote a couple of chapters with him and we'll see him off-and-on throughout the rest of this story, never fear.

I have the feeling the Valar will have no choice but to allow Elrond and Celebrían to remain as it's unlikely Elladan and Elrohir will want to return to Valinor with them; their lives are here in Middle-earth and they have no intentions of giving up their dreams. And as you point out, they will need all the healers they can find especially when the war comes. We'll have to see how it all falls out.

Thanks for reviewing. It's much appreciated.

Hey, if some one had just saved my kids life I don't think I would complain about who or what he is!

I think, once he has a chance to get acclimatized Elrond will settle in very nicely. I can't wait to see what he thinks of the 'goose'!

Good to see that everybody was taken care of and that their were no fatalities.

See I said, if nothing else Elrond would be able to help keep the children and parents calm.

Huggs,
Lynda

Author Reply: Hi Lynda. I wouldn't complain either, but some people are naturally difficult just to be difficult. We'll see some more of the Stillmans in the next chapter. And you were right about what Elrond would be able to do when it would be unlikely he would actually be allowed to treat anyone.

Thanks for leaving a review. It's much appreciated. Hugs back.

I nearly left a review when all I read was the title! Loved it. Elrond's wonder was well captured through the fast moving chapter. He certainly received a quick lesson in many aspects of modern society, but he has more to come. I hope we get to see something of Celebrian and Galadriel's reactions as well. Thanks for a great chapter.

Author Reply: I'm glad you liked the title, UTfrog, and that you felt that Elrond's wonder was well captured. We'll see about how the others react to things when they take their tour. Thanks for reviewing. I appreciate it.
