Elf Academy 3: The Enemy Within  by Fiondil 17 Review(s)

Poor Ron! When it rains, it pours! Knowing his luck, I hope he will not find out the toilet has decided to start malfunctioning at 4 in the morning like what happened to me a few weeks ago, it's just the thing that can happen after a bad day.

At least Holly is an amazing wife, and mothers can be the worst when children are involved.

So, that's how Kyle Stoner was just prepared for the situation in last chapter!

"“You have four full-blooded elven healers at your beck and call, Kyle,” Vorondur pointed out. “Why don’t you use them as guinea pigs?”"

Oww, good idea Ron, I'd love to see this happening! I can even see the Twins having their way out of that. Yes, to get a good baseline on elves, you will need some full-blooded elves *snickers*

And now Kyle has banned all elves from Glorfindel's room, he really isn't taking any chances with one of them doing anything stupid again, right?

The Unfortunate Burnt-Out Neon Signs is too funny! I hope Daeron and the others will manage at Edhellond, it seems now Glorfindel is out of the way for now, some of the Valinórean elves are making moves to get Finrod to lead them all. It's a good thing the later has enough common sense to understand he really needs the Wiseman elves to keep up with things!

“I found I needed the exercise and it kept me from wringing a few necks.” *grins* I really hope Finrod isn't done with Vardamir and Eärnur yet!

Finrod and Ron is interesting, Ron clearly is his own man now, and not taking anything from Finrod in that way.

In regards to all the cliff-dwellers from last chapter's reviews, I wanted to say how I haven't had as much fun with reading the comment than I'd had for some time in this fandom. I'm wishing you all a Good Friday (in whatever way you want to take it, Gandalf offers some suggestions in the early pages of the Hobbit, or you can decide on something else ;) ) and and merry Easter!

(hey, my spelling corrector knows 'Gandalf'. I already knew he recognized Sauron and Balrog. I like this thing ;) )

Author Reply: Hi FV_Whisper. My spell checker recognizes 'Elrond' for some reason but no one else. Go figure.

Holly is funny and Kyle is too cool for his own good. There's an interesting dynamic going on between Finrod and Vorondur and we may see more of it as time goes on. Ron has progressed beyond the medieval mindset of the other Elves, even Finrod, and I think that's true for the other Wiseman Elves. They've lived too long among Mortals and have adopted mortal viewpoints about class and status (at least Western viewpoints).

We will be seeing Finrod confronting not only Vardamir and Eärnur shortly but also Helyanwë. That particular conversation is well overdue and I know many readers are waiting for it.

Anyway, I hope you are having a Good Friday as well (I love Gandalf's word play on 'good'; it's hysterical) and happy Easter! Thanks for reviewing. It's greatly appreciated.

I have to laugh at Kyle. Let alone Vorondur volunteering the other elves to be guinea pigs for Kyle :)

I kind of understand the attitude the other elves have...Kin slaying is not and will not ever be a good topic to them. But I know Vorondur did not mean anything evil by it. Well not what they think any way. He wanted to have his family safe and with him, and now his baby is gone.

Finrod is starting to go with the flow, soon he will be acting like he has always been here. Well ok talking like he has.

Author Reply: Hi Laer. Well, what Vorondur says is true: Kyle does have 4 full-blooded healers at his beck and call; he might as well start with them before moving on to anyone else.

And Finrod is, I think, finally finding his place here. Having to take over for Glorfindel has forced him to step up to the plate, so to speak.

Thanks for reading and reviewing!

Hooray for blood-thirsty wives! I mean, it was nice of Holly to not be mad at Ron when he has had such a bad day. His day really has sucked, hasn't it? He was fortunate to find nice mortals though to help him out. Amroth is very nice, isn't he?

I bet Finrod really did want to finish what Ron started in the bookstore once he found out about the leash-slipping fiasco.

Receiving a hypodermic in the bookstore sounds like a bad euphemism for something...

Author Reply: Hi Ellie. Holly is funny here, isn't she? I don't think Ron expected this reaction from her. Finrod probably did want to finish what Ron started which is why he trekked across town in a blizzard in order to avoid succumbing to temptation. And I'm not even going to go near your last statement. That is way too loaded. LOL!

Thanks for taking time to read and leave a review. I appreciate it very much.

Poor Vorondur! He really did have a dreadful day! And yet it could have been worse; I hate to say it, but after what happened to Glorfindel, I was dreadfully suspicious of the Good Samaritans with their offer to jump his battery. I was tense all the time until they left, expecting them to kidnap him or maybe give him a beating as they had Glorfindel. My apologies to the nice fictional people for suspecting them!

The burnt out signs were amusing. Sometimes a sign doesn't even need missing letters to be funny. All last summer I kept meaning to take a picture of the gas station sign that offered "Ethanol free snow cones". (My reaction every time I saw it was "well, I should hope so!")

I now want to see what Finrod is going to say to the others. While it doesn't justify what Vorondur did, Earnur's arrogance had him pushing all the wrong buttons. His and Vardamir's certainty that what they did wasn't all that bad is beyond hubris. I'm wondering if perhaps they don't need a special visit just to them from Lord Irmo, to explain to them that they don't know everything there is to know.

I'm getting increasingly antsy about the twins and Serinde; surely they would have at least phoned or texted her parents by now. Somehow Fairbanks is beginning to seem rather sinister.

Author Reply: Hi Dreamflower. I don't actually blame you for being suspicious of the mortals Ron encountered here. He could well have been the victim of a mugging as well, but luckily all the mortals he did meet were nice people and I'm sure he was very grateful for them.

You're right about signs not needing to be missing letters to be funny. I always have to wonder when I see such signs if the person who created it really read what they had written, but apparently not. Newspaper headlines sometimes are like that when read literally.

Anyway, we will see what happens when Finrod returns to Edhellond after the storm passes and we will shortly be seeing what the Twins and Serindë are doing and why they haven't contacted their families yet.

Thanks for commenting. It's very much appreciated.

So glad I missed reading Mondays chapter and waited till today :) However this chapter has answered some questions and posed a few more. I can see Finrod is getting frustrated and angry with certain elves and their refusal to understand how things have to work in this day and age.

Really enjoying this story even if I am commenting less than usual - having a 2 year old running around (6 months into adoption placement) does not make for being able to do much more than read half the time. But as always it is a great story and I am looking forward to Mondays instalment.

Author Reply: Hey Arwen! Good to hear from you. I'm glad to know that you are still reading and enjoying my stories, especially this one. Finrod is feeling all kinds of frustration right now, but walking across town in a blizzard apparently has helped calm him down somewhat. *grin*

Congratulations and good luck with the adoption. 2-year-olds are a handful and a half so it's a miracle you even get a chance to sit and read, much less be able to leave a comment. Thanks for this one. I appreciate it very much.

Nice, quiet chapter - but I feel sorry for Ron. Murphy obviously decided to go after him with a vengeance!

But does this mean that the nuke will go up in the next chapter?

So Eärnur is sulking in his room and won't accept Ron's apology. I understand that Eärnur is upset - he was assaulted after all, and having lived most of his life in a very sheltered environment he would not be used to violence. But it was his and Vardamir's arrogance that sparked the assault, and it looks as if the same kind of arrogancce is endemic among the Valinorean Elves. Aldarion and Vardamir is directing their disdain at Ron here, but I wonder how they are treating the Wiseman Elves who still live in Edhellond? If they are that arrogant towards all of them, I guess there will be a general exodus while the locals find places to live elsewhere. Oh well, sufficient unto the day, and so on.

It's good to see that Ron at least has his wife's support. Here he was worried about how she would react to him assaulting Eärnur, but she is even more bloodthirsty! And at least Finrod seems to be coming around, even to realizing that his former status as King of Nargothrond doesn't give him any special authority among the locals.

Speaking of funny signs, there's one blogger who has a whole series of Church sign Epic Fails - very funny! http://www.patheos.com/blogs/christianpiatt/tag/epic-fail/

Author Reply: Hi Sunny. The god Murphy definitely had it in for Ron, that's for sure. I think that Vardamir is speaking for Eärnur here, as his physician, and so we don't really know if Eärnur himself wishes to see Ron or not.

Ron is very lucky in Holly. And Finrod is not an idiot. I imagine when he got home after work and asked a few pointed questions, especially with regards to Glorfindel slipping his leash, he was not pleased with the answers he got and decided leaving was the smartest thing he could do.

Funny signs. Thanks for the link and thanks for the review. It's much appreciated.

Did you plan poor Ron's bad day on some you had yourself? I think we can all identify days we wish we had stayed in bed. Great chapter. The stresses on the elves are showing all over. I still think the Valar should not have sent poorly prepared representatives. Their lack of preparation makes a great story, but it is scary in concept. I loved the different strangers stopping to help Ron. Holly's response was spot on for a loyal wife. The stews sounds delicious.

Hope you have a lovely Easter.

Author Reply: Well, living in central New York where the winters can be brutal, I've had my car not starting and needing a jump and I've had it hit black ice and skidded off the road into a ditch facing the opposite direction, though luckily it was in front of a farmhouse and the owner helped me to get the car back on the road, so I didn't have to wait for AAA. And you are constantly brushing the snow off your car. So, yeah, Ron's day is based on my own experiences and I'm sure many readers can relate and even tell their own winter stories.

Anyway, the Elves' lack of preparation is a scary concept but fun to write about. And Holly is indeed a loyal wife.

Thanks for reviewing, UTfrog. Have a happy Easter as well.
