When I saw the chapter title, my first thought was: "What are you going to throw at him now?!". Well, the lack of oxygen and the low pressure seem to be something they really can't avoid. The height of 13 000 feet, partly on foot... What a pity there is no easier route nearby. I'm feeling sorry for Bilbo, also, having to go through that after living all his life near small hills. It is almost hilarious to see Aragorn wrathful as the mountain sickness dared to affect him, after he has suffered patiently through so much worse illnesses. His sleepiness in the cave may have been partly from the fire using most of the oxygen... Nice detail! And Aragorn couldn't have a better horse on that journey, as Moroch seems to be careful and trusting. Gandalf is now showing his kind, caring side more than ever. It is hard to cross mountains with a man in that condition and without knowing much about healing. They need now a few large eagles willing to take passengers, but somehow I doubt that is going to happen. Author Reply: Yes: I didn't so much "throw" at him this time. It was just sort of inevitably in his path. And yes, poor Bilbo! That section reads with such dreary misery, and I always just want to give the brave little hobbit a hug. Hey, sooner or later the most patient tempers must crack. Nicely noted with the cave. Another thing that would not have affected him in the normal way of things, but with the confluence of circumstances... I do feel badly for Gandalf. He's helpless to do much at all. I cannot *imagine* how the horses would react to the arrival of a band of Eagles!

Oh no, poor Aragorn! I was just thinking reading the last chapter that the last thing he needed was to get Altitude Sickness, and alas. Thank goodness for Gandalf though Author Reply: Indeed: without Gandalf this would be a disaster! Very astute reading. ;-)
