The Dreaming Stone  by Indigo Bunting 25 Review(s)

Ah! At last! I got to read the chapter last night, but then when I went to comment, I had some internet navigation trouble.

I think I'm going to love this very much. I like the opening chapter in Merry's POV, and I am very intrigued with what it could be that has befallen the Fellowship.

I also love that you show how Pippin has matured: enough to swallow his own disappointment at not being able to explore with the rest in favor of carrying his own weight and fulfilling his responsibilities. Very nicely done!

(BTW,in case you are interested, I wrote an essay on gapfillers in which I used your story "The River" as an example: The Classic Lord of the Rings Gapfiller: How to Keep Folks Reading When They Know How the Story Turns Out I keep forgetting to post it here!)

Author Reply: Thanks, Dreamflower! Sorry it took so long to reply to this review. I do hope you like the story. Writing Pippin is a bit of a challenge for me. I like all the members of the Fellowship, and I love the parts of the books where they're all together, but I feel less affinity for Pippin than for some of the others. I think we all have characters that we find easier or harder to work through. Hopefully I will do him justice. I don't like it much when Pippin is written as childish. He's somewhat impulsive, but if he were childish, I don't think he'd have been selected to go on the quest.

I read your essay, and I'm overwhelmed! It's an honor to have been chosen as an example in such carefully crafted piece of work. I can tell you've read a lot of fanfiction and spent a good deal of time thinking about the craft of writing. The other stories you used as examples are solid works (though I haven't read one of them). Some of those authors were inspirations for me to start posting my own ideas.

The response I continue to receive for "The River" nearly seven years after I finished posting it continues to amaze me. The most rewarding thing for me is that people genuinely seem to get into it. (Did you know that someone designed a book cover for the story? I'll post the link below.) My goal has always been to write stories of the best quality I can manage. I'm just fleshing out things from my own imagination. And if other people can take pleasure in them too, so much the better.

Oh, dear--couch a fragment of whatever the stone was and fall asleep, eh? Now, to see how Pippin does at getting them out without touching the fragments himself!

So wonderful to see you writing again! Welcome back!

Author Reply: Thanks, Larner! It's good to be back, and it's nice to have a review from you again!

OH! Oh my! I wish I had time to read this first chapter NOW. But I will as soon as I get home from work!

I just finished re-reading "The River" again, and wishing you had written more fic! I'm SO excited!

Author Reply: Yay! If you were happy to see this new story, I think I might have been even happier to see a review from you. I remember how insightful and encouraging you were during the posting of “The River". I looked forward to your comments with every new chapter. I don't know if enough readers understand just how much solid, thoughtful reviews mean to the writers, regardless of whether those reviews are positive or negative. Your reviews are golden. I’ll admit to being a little nervous on setting out again. “The River” went so well that I think it’s going to be a hard act to follow. I was very satisfied with it, and the readers seemed to be, too. I’m hoping everyone enjoys the follow-up.

Oh my goodness, this is so suspenseful and mysterious! I'll eagerly look forward to chapter 2 whenever you're ready to post.

Author Reply: Thanks, Shirebound! I'm excited to be posting again. Hopefully folks will enjoy the story.

You don't know how much I needed this today. I loved "The River" and I'm so eager to see where this story goes, even if it takes a while. Poor Pippin! Seems as if he has quite the task on his hands. Thanks for sharing.

Author Reply: Thank you so much, Molly. I know what you mean about how something good to read (especially when it's unexpected) can help turn a bad day around. I'm honored if this is one such story for you. I hope you enjoy it!
