The Eagles are Coming  by Thundera Tiger 14 Review(s)
Kitt OtterReviewed Chapter: 1 on 9/4/2008
Ooo, very dark. But hey, if you're writing a short AU, this is the way to do it. It was all quite imaginable: the mists (a creepy touch), the falling of the Elven kingdoms, Elrond's wise decision to take Vilya away. I liked that the "last scions of Thorondor had pledged to defend the last scions of Turgon." Aragorn's fate is so different but true as well, being only the twin's little "shadow." And clever way of tying in "the Eagles are coming."
Scary, yet very interesting and well-written!

Author Reply: Hey Kitt,

I'm glad you liked the Silm references in Thorondor and Turgon. I was rather fond of that part, actually, though it didn't emerge until the final draft version. Sometimes the late additions are the best. And I'm so happy you liked the title tie-in. That's really what prompted the AU to begin with. I was looking for an event less happy in which the eagles might come, and there's Bilbo with the answer. Thank you again for the review!

Eh, yes, a *slightly* different turn of events.
Although I have read this before, the end of the story - and Middle-earth - gave me shivers all over again. A powerful story!
Each paragraph takes the reader a step further into despair until you are with Erestor in that darkness of the closing line. I really like the contrast in the calls of 'The Eagles' - quite a set of bookends to this story.
A moving piece of writing. Excellent.
oh, and I have virtual prozac for anyone who needs it after reading this!! ;-)

Author Reply: I'll pass the prozac around in case anyone asks for it. And okay, "slightly" might be a bit misleading. But really, the change isn't all that big. Someone loses some jewelry when they fall over during a battle. It just happens to be some pretty valuable jewelry. Thank you for the review, and also thank you for all your help!

Oh what a sad and scary AU! Altogether too plausible! I'm so glad it didn't happen that way--poor Bilbo! Poor everyone!

Author Reply: Thank you so much for the review, Dreamflower, and I'm glad you found it plausible as well as sad and scary. That's the kind of response I was looking for, actually, but it's always difficult to gage whether you've balanced the right elements or not.

That is so chilling.

It's interesting to see what a tiny AU change could make - if Sauron regained the One Ring, the three Elven rings would fall to his power. With Elrond dead, what hope is there for Imladris?

I like the glimpse of the usual characters, bereft of hope, still vainly battling against the darkness. But it's still sad :(

Author Reply: Hey May,

This may sound odd, but I'm glad the story chilled you. It wasn't supposed to be a happy story, so knowing that you found it sad makes me...happy. Hope that made some kind of sense. Thanks for the review!
