Map of Tree  by The Karenator 11 Review(s)

Grief in its way can be as seductive a means of self-indulgence as pleasure, or so Tree finds.

And he does lose his king-brother along the way, unfortunately.

Oh yes. It can become a self-identity. In Tree's backstory, which doesn't appear anywhere but in my head, he already lived in the Greenwood when Oropher and the refugees arrived. He formed a strong friendship with Oropher before Oropher was crowned king. Tree was willing to fight to save his home, but when he lost his loved ones, his whole world view changed. Everything was filtered through his grief from then on.

I don't think Oropher had any precognitive knowledge about his upcoming demise, but I wanted him to give Tree a lifeline to sustain his friend through the addition of more grief. Tree survived and learned to find joy, but he never lost all the sadness.

Thank you, Larner, for reading and leaving a review.
