All that is gold...  by perelleth 13 Review(s)

What a lovely Bilbo story! I really like this clandestine encounter between Estel and the Hobbit--I've seen others before, but this one is quite lovely, with the talk that they have, and the lesson Bilbo teaches the child. I'd love to see your take on their reunion years later!

I also liked your very subtle hints of the effect Bilbo's use of the One, innocent as it was, had upon two of the bearers of the Three! Wonderful concept!

Author Reply: THnak you, Dreamflower! ANd I appreaciate it doubly coming from you! I always hesitate to write hobbits, but BIlbo is definitely such a lovely character! I had always wnated to explore the first visit of the One to Imladris, glad it worked for you!

Perelleth, that was simply wonderful. I'm quite convinced that Estel must have met Bilbo when he passed through Rivendell, even if Elrond did try to keep them apart. I love the humour of the piece, interspersed by darkness and foreshadowing. Elladan's comment “We could have done this five hundred years ago!” is so true, and so painful. So much suffering could have been avoided if they had.

I like that Elrond and Mithrandir could feel the moment Bilbo put on the ring and sense the evil of it, even if they didn't know what it was.

I love the humour too, from Elladan's mind trick that always gets Estel to go to sleep, to Estel lying in wait for Elrohir, only to find he's caught Bilbo instead.

A lovely tale for Dot's birthday.

Author Reply: THank you, Jay, I also think it possible that Estel and BIlbo could have met then. Dunedain chieftains were fostered in Imladris, and at eleven a child was no longer a child...

I had always wondered about the amazing coincidence that the ONe RIng had been in residence in IMladris, and I wanted to toy with that. I am glad that you enjoyed it.

This was absolutely wonderful, Perelleth! You captured Estel and Bilbo both so well. I love Estel's line of logic that led him to the kitchens, the strange sensation that both Elrond and Mithrandir experienced when Bilbo slipped on the ring, that Mithrandir doesn't know about Estel, and that Bilbo didn't guess he was a human child. The whole thing was entirely delightful.

Author Reply: THank you, NIlmandra! Children and Hobbits are not exaclty within my comfort zone, so I am happy that it came out believably! Children are capable of coming up with such twisted reasoning to explain their most foolish actions!

I had always wondered if Elrond and Mithrandir would have felt that Bilbo wore the One, and I assumed that perhaps if he wore it they would perceive it, though not knowing what it was. When I first read LOTR I was fascinated by the connection with the Hobbit. To think that ELrond had had it right under his nose as a guest!

Thank you again for your kind help! :-)
