To Light the Way  by Dot 15 Review(s)

“I lost my way,” he said softly.

“I too, Elladan. But have you found it again?”

“I believe so.” Elladan smiled. “I believe I found it here amongst the crazy wood-elves.”

This is especially delicious - as, in my world, several hundred years from now, Elladan will marry one of these crazy wood-elves.

Author Reply: LOL! That hadn't occured to me at all. But it's quite an amusing thought :-)

Lovely story, Dot. In times of dark and trouble, finding hope becomes an exercise in faith. I like the torches as beacons to guide the way. And Thranduil's realm acts like any besieged people that have lived with it long enough - they go on with life and get by, never forgetting what is important.

and Happy Birthday, Jay!

Author Reply: Thanks, Nilmandra. I thought of the lights of the elves in The Hobbit and it occurred to me that they could be more than simply torches. And it’s how I’ve always thought of Thranduil’s people – that their strength of spirit was one of their greatest weapons against darkness. Thank you so much for reviewing!

Geez, I love Thranduil. And the crazy wood elves. :-)

I laughed at Elladan telling Thranduil he was like Men. LOLOL. Way to ingratiate yourself, Elladan. But he's right that wood elves do seem to have a more immediate sense of time. They seize the day. Perhaps the peril in which they live has encourage that.

Happy birthday to Jay. What a nice gift.

Author Reply: LOL, Elladan was certainly taking a big risk! I’m glad you thought that what he said was right. It did seem to me that Thranduil’s people had lived for so long under Shadow that they learned what’s important and how vital it is not to lose faith. Thanks for the review, daw.

You have really got the balance right in this! So very Mirkwood. I like the way you have picked up on the scene in the Hobbit of the elves merry making, but the warriors in the trees around the perimeter there as a reminder that Thranduil lives an ueasy existence with Dol Guldur so close. I really enjoyed this. Thank you.

Author Reply: Thank you so much! Yes, the idea of the merry making and of the lights of the elves came from the Hobbit. I'm thrilled you felt it rang true and that you enjoyed the story. Thanks for the review :-)

That's lovely, Dot!

I held my breath for a moment when Elladan compared Thranduil and the elves of Mirkwood to Men - not, I thought, a good move! - but he pulled it off! Thranduil gave the twins a lesson they needed to have reinforced and they listened and learned. But maybe it was good for Thranduil to be reminded of the best qualities of men and to be reminded that, no matter what the species, they had similar hopes and dreams. And the play on hope/Hope is just irresisitible - and signficant, too. For men and elves.

The spider sounded - literally - disgusting as Elrohir's blade squelched out of its underbelly. Sensory overload in arachnid revoltingness! But the patrols of elves watching the twins from the trees are great. It must be hard to pass through the forest without being spotted when the trees talk to the locals!

The feast - carefully guarded to protect those celebrating - is something I can see happening so easily. Defiance, in a way, of the encroaching dark and a declaration that life will go on. I love the light - and Elrohir's recollection of Elrond showing him the stars as a promise of continuity.

E2L and Thranduil. Couldn't be better.

Author Reply: Thanks, Bodkin!

Yeah, that was pretty brave of Elladan! But it seems he knew what he doing… I figured E2 are well and truly adults and perhaps Thranduil could learn a little something from them as well as reminding them of something they’d forgotten. Plus, I thought Thranduil deserved a little recognition :-)

I think you win the prize today in revoltingness, not me! I’d swear I could smell those dragons…

I’m glad you enjoyed this. Thanks for the review!
