The Burning of the Year  by Raksha The Demon 16 Review(s)
JuliaReviewed Chapter: Prologue on 12/22/2006
A very-well written story. I like the New Year's pyre as a foreshadowing of the pyre that Denethor tried to immolate himself and Fara on, though Faramir was, thank goodness, saved from that end, and only Denethor perished in the flames.

Author Reply: I thought of happy solstice bonfires, and then Faramir, and Denethor, both of whom would probably be expected at the ceremony, and the rest of it just flowed out of the circumstance and characters. Thanx much for reading and reviewing, Julia.

I think this is the best thing you've done since 'Falcon'. It's very inventive, without clashing with what JRRT himself told us: the sort of detail about Gondorian life that one always wanted to know. Faramir's thinking is deep and selfless, just what you'd expect from him, and the guarded, understated feeling between him and D. rings very true indeed.

My only criticism is that I personally find the final conversation between F and D a bit long. The last line is superb, however.

Author Reply: Thanx for reading and reviewing, Nesta!

I'm pleased that the emotions running between Faramir and Denethor came out as guarded and understated, since although I could talk forever about their relationship, those two characters keep their feelings, and words, tightly wrapped most of the time.

And I'm so glad you liked the last line; since that was the hardest thing to write - I had four different possibilities before I settled on the final choice.

Wow Rasksha, that is a wonderfuland powerful fic. So much foreshadowing yet hopeful too.

Author Reply: I'm glad you enjoyed the story, harrowcat; and thanx for reviewing. I had a certain amount of evil fun with the foreshadowing, though I felt bad for both Faramir and Denethor.

Evocative and atmospheric, Raksha - well done.

Author Reply: Thanx much for reading and reviewing; Altariel, especially since your story of solstice in Gondor 3018, A Pale Light Lingering, with Faramir, Denethor and the Ithilien Rangers, is an exemplar of quality Faramir fanfiction:

The Year King, or the herd bull--yes, once it was sacrifice that hallowed the new year. And this makes the atrocity to come that much the worse, when in his despair Denethor seeks to burn his son alive with him.

But good to see at least some softening between them, if only briefly.

Author Reply: I figured that the barriers probably would come down a bit on this occasion, when both Denethor and Faramir would be especially reminded of Boromir.

I'd forgotten about the bull's role in some solstice rituals - good call.

Thanx for reading and reviewing!

A grea story, atmospheric and chilling as we all know what will happen less than 3 months later.

I love the way you incorporate ancient solstice rituals into M-e. I feel very much for Faramir here,so obviously seen as being of less worth than his brother.

Faramir is right to cling to hope as by the next turning of the year, Gondor will have her true King.

Author Reply: Faramir is in the odd position of clinging to hope while not really believing that there is much left; which, in my opinion, makes him all the more courageous. And if Denethor sees him as being of less worth than Boromir, it's probably a situation Faramir's been living with for most of his life; but on the turning of the year, it strikes Faramir harder than usual.

Thanx much for reading and reviewing, Linda!
