Guiding Light  by Dot 12 Review(s)

Lovely, Dot. Duty and sacrifice - and the reminder that there is a reason behind it all that makes it worthwhile.

I feel for Thranduil - he is doing what he can, poor elf, but he's up against something too strong and he's left fighting a rearguard action. As he watches Turion put his dreams away and dedicate himself to the cause, he must feel awful. He needs his son and the forest needs them both, but we all want to offer our children freedom from the worries that dog us.

And then ... naughty Legolas skipping his lessons! It's a good thing that Thranduil was able to curb his instinctive reaction - hug, shout and punish - because what Legolas was doing was just what he needed. The gift was beautiful and brought his adar back round to the beginning of the circle. Protection, purity, love. And next time, perhaps he'll tell his tutor what he wants to do and why ... and perhaps not!

Spiders! Is this spider week? They are distressingly close to home here - and that must be something else that brings home what is happening to the forest.

I expect the warriors will be glad that the panic is over. And it didn't turn out to be a bad thing, because they found said arachnids before said arachnids found them.

Lovely story, Dot. It even made me comment when I should be packing. So I'd better stop now and get organised!

Author Reply: I just love your reviews! Thank you so much. I’m assuming you eventually packed and got going!

I thought it would be interesting to see Thranduil before the fight against the Shadow becomes part of life in Mirkwood – how devastating it must have been. And, like you say, he has to watch his own son set things he loves aside and dedicate himself to the fight, and Thranduil knows he needs him to do that.

Legolas sort of inadvertently helped – but he has a good heart. Thranduil just needed to see his way out of the despair to focus on what needs to be done. Though I wouldn’t be willing to bet that Legolas has learned his lesson about skipping his studies!

I had the spider scene already written when Nilmandra posted hers and I briefly considered cutting it – but that’s life in Mirkwood, I suppose! (Actually, I sort of doubt they’d really have got that close at that time but hey, you never know.)

I’m glad you liked it! Have a great holiday :-)

A lovely tale, Dot. I liked Thranduil's grief at the darkening of the forest as the shadow grows, and the effect the oppression has on him.

Turion was a surprise - I'm so used to Legolas being an only child, or seeing Ithilden and Eilian, that another brother threw me. I wondered for a second who he was! I like him though, especially his habit of writing stories. We can all identify with that.

The ending, with Thranduil realising that the light of joy and love would keep the darkness from winning, was perfect. Thank you for Daw's birthday gift - I'm enjoying them as much as she must be.

Author Reply: Thanks, Jay! I’m delighted you enjoyed this. I felt bad for Thranduil actually – I can only imagine what it must have been like when the Shadow returned, before the fight against it became part of daily life. And I’m so pleased that you like Tûrion! He and his passion for writing stories have existed on my hard-drive for a while now but I though it was time to bring him out into the open! Thanks so much for the review :-)
