For Love of a City  by meckinock 25 Review(s)

Beautifully written and very moving. Also, very different to your usual style, but just as effective. I echo Linda Hoyalnd - I'd love to see you write Faramir and Aragorn together.

This was particularly poignant remembering Halbarad's relationship with his wife in "A Matter of Honour". The line about her waiting for his return was heartbreaking. Makes me yearn to read more about the living Halbarad...gentle nudge.

Also loved the scene with Denethor raising Faramir up high, especially for the image of a giggling Boromir!

Happy Birthday to Nilmandra and thanks for all the time and effort you put into this site.

Cheers, Envinyatar

Author Reply: Hi, Envinyatar,

Thanks; I'm glad you enjoyed it. I found the first-person present worked well for the short, intense type of story this is. I'm not sure I could sink myself that deeply into a character I intended to hang out with for 60,000 words, though. It was an interesting experiment. I can only hope the next chapter of "Honor" decides to whip itself into shape as quickly as this did.

I love the first person point of view - how did you like it in Faramir's head? And the feeling of relief and lightness that has come in the wake of the dispersal of the horrors of Mordor - and the feeling of promise for the future. In his heart, in the scenery, in the sound of Eowyn's laughter.

Even the re-growth of the grass suggests moving on.

Then - Hurin. Poor Hurin, last seen (courtesy of Karen) slaying his first orc, has lost his brother and his father - and his innocence. I don't blame him for needing to go home - for a while, at least. His mother will need him, and he needs to be reminded why they did it. Not just to put Aragorn on his high throne, but for those people who have scratched a living in the Angle.

I love (and agree with) the awkward masculine support. Heaven forbid that either of them let go. But then - they don't need to. They both understand without words what the other is enduring.

I would like to see Hurin back in the White City. I can picture him and Faramir becoming good friends.

A lovely story, Meckinock.

Author Reply: Before yesterday I never imagined being in Faramir's head, so it was virgin territory for me. I realized how much he had in common with Hurin, and at the same time so little, and it sort of took off from there. I did enjoy exploring the contrast, for those who've been following my other story and Karen's, between the Hurin that we've gotten to know a bit up until now and this older man who's lost so much. I think Hurin would ultimately find himself at home in Minas Tirith, but it just seemed to me that he wanted to go home first. I think he and Faramir could be good friends, too. They seem much alike. Thanks, Bodkin.

Author Reply: Thanks, Linda. I know you're a Faramir Fancier so I'll take any praise from you on that account to heart.

Wow, Meckinock, I really enjoyed that. I always love stories about Faramir because he is the embodiment of h/c to me. What a lovely piece, very moving and poignant. I think Nilmandra needs to have more birthdays if these stories are to keep coming! :D LOL

Happy Birthday Nilmandra!!

Nilmandra deserves to have a birthday every week, though I don't know if I could keep up with them. Also she might object to adding them all up :-) Glad you enjoyed the story. Writing Faramir came as a spur-of-the-moment decision and I'm glad you thought it worked out. I didn't want to do anything too gloomy as a birthday story but I'm afraid I couldn't stay away from angst entirely.
