Shadows of a Nameless Fear  by Budgielover 316 Review(s)

What a perfectly delightful ending to such a thrilling adventure!

I really liked Merry's clever solution to getting Pippin to "relax", LOL! And that he himself got rather somewhat relaxed as well I note--very good!

All the sickroom interaction was lovely--especially Frodo's instant concern for and relief for his cousins, though I also was tickled by his confusion.

“I suppose it is because they all have something to come back to. A sweetheart and a hole of his own for Sam, a family and land and position for Merry and Pippin. All I had was a Ring of fire and pain, and now even it is gone. I have … nothing.”

So very sad, and so true to the way Frodo felt. I am glad he was able to talk about it to Marly, and I was so touched by the anxiety of the others, as they hoped for that.

It was lovely to see Aragorn have a chance to reward Peter's family finally, and then the bit at the end with the mushrooms was just right! I'd been mourning those mushrooms on Frodo's behalf ever since it happened...

Can't wait for you to start another tale!

Author Reply: I'm so glad you enjoyed the story, Dreamflower my dear! It tickled me to see your comment on Frodo's creamed mushrooms ... it reminded me Our Movies, when the poor hobbit hardly ever gets to eat. Have you noticed that? Out of Rivendell, the crebain deny him Sam's stew. He won't eat in that scene above the Anduin.Faramir's men keep him from enjoying those rabbits. It makes me just want to sit him down and feed him... :)

Running very late now Budgielover but I just had to stay to appreciate this ending. Wonderful and all end neatly tied!

Author Reply: *grins* And now life may resume as usual ... until the next story!

How the heck did I miss this chapter being posted? And there I was hanging on by my finger ends to find out whether Pippin is safe. Well, being at my parents' house over Christmas and only able to access the net occasionally may have been the reason.

After the Troll, being buried by an Orc would be light! And great work getting the desired lifts back to the city!

Author Reply: Harrowcat, I think this whole story might be subtitled, "The Rescues of Frodo and Peregrin." Ah, the fun in getting there!

Lovely ending! I must say you have a flare for comedy, even when things are serious but you make it work so well! Poor Frodo coming into consciousness and feeling faintly insulted by Aragron ;) Also his thinking about being bathed and "devoutly hoping it was Sam" who had done it!

Sam is so generous and one of those characters that I always wish I could be more like! I loved that he carefully took care of everyone else before he himself tried to rest, dear Sam!

I'm very glad that Frodo had such a wonderful person to listen to his terrible memories. This looks to be a wonderful start to his healing! He certainly has plenty of people around who want to help him!

A very nice story and you really illustrated the whole "all' well, ends well" philosophy! Even giving the man with the mushrooms another chance! :) Thank you for such an exciting read!

Author Reply: Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed the story, Hai. It's the little moments you mentioned, not the great drama, that endear these characters to us. The little flashes of humanness (or 'hobbitness') that we identify with.

Marvelous - I'm so glad that I decided to give in all those weeks ago and try this adventure! That idea with Marly coaxing his painful story out of the Ringbearer was sweet and gentle, and of course such a delightfully hobbit-centered tale ends with - mushrooms!

*bows before a mistress of storytelling*

Author Reply: I don't know if I deserve the bow (or the designation), Cúthalion, but I am grateful!

My dear, my dear, I have no words - well, I'm not entirely speechless, or you wouldn't find my review here. This is so splendid... the armies of Gondor and Rohan, forced to leave poor Pip at the mercy of an orc, and then Arwen of all people runs to the rescue. No embroidery needle this time, no sir! *crows with delight*

And the topping of the cake - of course - is two hobbits sneaking into the arms of the two loveliest women of Rohan and Gondor, and Faramir and Aragorn left behind to muse about the undoubtable skills of hobbits to charm corageous heroines...

Absolutely wonderful (and sorry hat it took me so long fto find my way here)!

Author Reply: I'm so glad you enjoyed it ... and picked up on MY favorite parts. Somehow those 'poor little hobbits' keep coming out ahead, don't they? The two loveliest woman there cooing over them and totally ignoring (other than to reprimand) their beloveds. All I can say, is that it is a good thing Hobbits have no desire to rule the world... :)

Whew! That story was aaal-most too stressful for me. Your threats of death and disaster are overly convincing! So I'm extra glad to have such a long and comforting final chapter.

Loved Pippin's continued food-fixation -- even in the midst of his dreams. And it was nice to see Marly and Peter's family again.

Author Reply: *faints* 'aaal-most too stressful' for YOU??? Then my work is done indeed on this story. Wait a second ... you said 'almost...' I guess I'll just have to work harder on the next one! :D

Yes! Good for Arwen! She's unlikely to trust an orc as far as she could spit him - and knows just how much you could rely on his word.

And Pippin is not only free, he and Merry are having the most comfortable and caring escort back to Frodo.

That'll be a relief for everyone! A most unexpected rescue.

Author Reply: *grins* A few people picked up on the horsemen, Bodkin, but only one person picked up on the rescue being Eomer's men, and no one picked up on Arwen actually saving Pippin. After all that careful wording of Aragorn's! This was a wonderfully fun chapter to write, and I'm glad you enjoyed it so.

How amazing. I really adored this exciting chapter that dealt with the rescue of Pippin so darn well. So exciting that I was on the edge of my seat the whole time!
for a heartbeat, his authority over his men had faltered, pushed to the limit from love of one young halfling.
I love that line--indeed Aragorn sacrificed all arms save one to save PIppin--and oh the angst of Merry and then the resolution of Merry finding PIppin...
The soft arms released him to the care of his cousin, and Merry wrapped himself around Pippin and joined him in weeping, hugging each other in disbelief that both their lives had been given back to them.
awww~! seriously, i am so glad for that. So glad.
WHat an ordeal that Pippin had to go through and i'm just glad that he was found.
And the bit with Arwen-- that rascal Pippin. Love him... lol that really was so Budgielover-like humor at the end of the adventure and angst.
::loves this story::

Author Reply: My turn to say "Awwww," Periantari. Thank you so much for your generous review. It is very sweet of you to list those lines; I appreciate that because I worked on them so. You know how you want a certain emotion to come across in a story, and the positive joy you feel when it does. Thank you!
