A Bride for a King  by Madeleine 28 Review(s)
NilmandraReviewed Chapter: 3 on 1/15/2006
Ioreth is still full of wisdom, isn't she? If Lothiriel listens carefully, she might even find that it probably was hard earned. Married to the king of Rohan is indeed ceratinly nothing to complain about! But those darn principles.... they tend to get in the way at times.

I loved chapter 6 over at ff.net of the new story equally well, but ff.net won't let me review. I submitted a bug/error report, but I dn't know how long until they clear up the problem. So I will just tell you here how much I enjoyed it and that I am very eagerly looking forward to their wedding night.

Author Reply: Ioreth is right. We shouldn't take principles too seriously. Wasn't it Oscar Wilde who said: "Those are my principles. If you don't like them I have others."

Ioreth is certainly a breath of fresh air. Or a bucket of cold water depending on how you see her, I guess. But I do sympathize with Lothiriel. Knowing and feeling are two different things.

Author Reply: I have this feeling as if Ioreth is one of those people who don't mind throwing a bucket of cold water - quite literally - at fellow humans.

Unfortunately her father had found her a husband she actually wished to wed so she could hardly refuse him just to teach the Lord of Dol Amroth a lesson.

I am glad she is sensible enough to acknowledge that! And that, now the war is over, she is going to have to bow to the demands of the family business.

Mind you, Ioreth seems decidedly irritating - and not just because poor Lothiriel has had a cup or two too much wine. 'Runt'? 'Wailing'? She's not selecting her words with any great delicacy. Though 'child' might be more offensive than any, considering Lothiriel's youth.

And the day off will give her plenty of time to word her response. Too much time, possibly.

Even at a distance these two are prowling around each other like a pair of wolves. Love it.

Author Reply: Ioreth is one of those irritating people who always hit you over the head with the truth, which you have - somehow - already excepted, but certainly don't wish to hear from others.

“Not long ago you said when you find yourself in a certain position, you ask yourself what would Elphir do? And then you do the opposite!"

Very cunning piece of brother management there! For all her straightforwardness - only she would add 'almost' when denying that she had been doing anything - she is very experienced in brothers. That should stand her in good stead with her betrothed.

I don't know if information obtained from Amrothos will be all that useful though - he does have a rather skewed vision of life. And endless curiosity. The thought of him watching with huge amusement as Lothiriel puts the cat among the pigeons is very entertaining - but she would be cutting off her nose to spite her face. (How many more cliches can I add?)

A very enjoyable picnic. I rather like the thought of Amrothos becoming embroiled in his own cleverness sometime ... might make a good post-Lothiriel project!

Author Reply: I think Lothíriel and Amrothos have a lot in common. Both are straightforward and honest, Amrothos is just much more experienced and cynical. And in the back of my mind there is already an "Amrothos project" taking shape.

Well, here came the Amrothos everyone loved and feared.

This was hilarious. I love how dry you are about Amrothos. I'm not sure Lothiriel got much useful information here, but at least she got a chance to talk out her thoughts. Amrothos, on the other hand, realizes that a show is about to begin. Bad Amrothos!

Author Reply: Would you believe if I told you that Amrothos has taken on a life of his own and that there is absolutely nothing I can do against it?

You do such a wonderful job with little details like the 1000year old manuscript that Amrothos fans her with. And Eomer proposes! That's so great.

They're really quite different in temperament. She's usually so rational and he's quite physical. He's smart though and careful. And she's capable of passion. They'll be good for one another.

But oh the thought of leaving everything and moving to Rohan where even the language is different! That must be daunting even if it's what she's expected.

Author Reply: I'm addicted to details. I read a lot about Medieval history and pick up many little things, keeping them in mind, hoping I can use them one day. And I love it when the readers pick them up.

I do like Amrothos. And Erchirion. Lothiriel has two very bright and likeable brothers there! Although it could be said that Amrothos is typically the youngest son - he doesn't have to be too serious and practical as he is neither heir nor spare. However - he could have let Erchirion get the word in first!

And why couldn't Imrahil pen a brief note to his daughter? Really, telling the big brother to do his dirty work isn't very tactful. (Perhaps that's where Amrothos gets it from!)

Amrothos is right that Lothiriel's tendency to stop breathing when under pressure is a touch worrying - but this must be a pretty big roller coaster. First unexpected feelings for Eomer - then a betrothal - and only then discovering that she has been betrothed to her lust object!

Eomer has done rather a good job with that proposal, though. Simple, direct, honest - and designed by a man with a strong-willed sister, who doesn't want to be on the defensive when he meets his bride. Not gushing. But then, their relationship is hardly at that level.

Such fun!

Author Reply: I don't think that would have been the brightest idea, writing her a letter: "Daughter dearest, I just arranged your betrothal." I suppose Imrahil wanted Erchiron to bring the news to Lothíriel in a sensitive way, but there was one thing he hadn't reckoned with: Amrothos.
That was a grave neglect on his part, indeed. You should always reckon with Amrothos.

I love that Eomer managed to turn her on her head yet again. Such a concept, asking her for her consent! :D

Author Reply: Asking for her consent gives him the feeling he is still in control; and gives her the feeling that her wishes matter. But it is most likely Imrahil who holds all the reins.
