The Three Towers  by shirebound 30 Review(s)

You definitely have me intrigued by this one. I can understand why Frodo feels he has to return to Cirith Ungol - but I fear what will happen to him when he does. Confronting one's inner demons is no easy task, even when you have friends like Sam to help you.

I'm going to buckle in and enjoy the ride - hope to see more of this posted soon!

I was so excited to see another story by Shirebound, I did a Happy Dance around the room! I cannot wait for the next installment.

I hope your Holidays were grand!

Cheers!

Oh, this already has me shivering - and I always love your take on Frodo, steadfast and questing, even at his most vulnerable. Eagerly looking forward to more!

Oh, this is a most intriguing premise and development! Frodo needing to face his demons to remember something so traumatic, Sam trying to protect him - and Pippin having his own little flashes of memory and precognition.

I can't wait to see what happens on this journey.

Ainu LaireReviewed Chapter: 1 on 12/29/2005
Scene: Minas Tirith, fifth level. Laire is currently in a clean, reputable pub, in the corner with her laptop. Beside her, smoking a pipe and in his dark 'ranger cloak', is Aragorn, completely unrecognized. She is grinning like a maniac, and he looks completely amused.

I read this, prepared to scream "Aragorn" like a fanatic nut... but I'm screaming another name... Alcaren! I feel in love with him right away! I love him! I want to take him home!

Aragorn: Thank Elbereth, it was about time it wasn't me.

Oh, you're not out of my mind either, ranger. Anyways, there are just some OCs that one cannot help but love. This is one of them. I want him! XD He's so... awesome! I don't know why, but I loved him right away!

Oh, I love how you write the hobbits, Janet. It just brings a big grin to my face when I see all four of them together. The beginning really got to me. I love it much!

Oh, I never thought that the tower of Ecthelion being similar to the guard tower in Minas Morgul, but now that you mention it, it really makes perfect sense. It's a common occurance in real life-

Aragorn: You mean your world?

... fine, *my world* *rolls eyes*. But it makes a lot of sense. You are so smart ^^

Saw movie!Pippin reference right there, with the beacon *grins and is proud of self* *happily ignores Aragorn's snickering*

Speaking of Pippin, he is still drawn to the Palantir, it seems... *sigh* That may be a bit of a problem.

The lack of Aragorn, funny enough, doesn't have me sad at all-

Aragorn: *sighs with relief* She's terrible when miserable.

-and I am the first official member of the Alcaren fan club.

Aragorn: *starts coughing, yet cannot hold back laughter*

Oh, shush, ranger, or I'll tell the whole pub here who you are.

Aragorn: *narrows eyes*

... just kidding *gives him a big grin* Oh, this was a fabulous pre-b-day gift! *grins* I loved it a lot. I cannot wait until you continue, madam! ^^ *bows and exits to do holiday homework*

Ooh! I've heard that returning to the scene of the crime is supposed to be good for the victim but I'm with Sam on this! Frodo you mustn't!!!!!
But he will anyway! You evil Author, you. And your readers are there egging you on at every turn. *g*

Great beginning. I'm looking forward to where you're taking this.

I thought it was really interesting that Frodo knew so much about the layout of the tower even though his memories of the time he was held at Cirith Ungel were so vague. I'm also fascinated that Pippin was subconsciously aware of the palanir and where it was. I'm worried about what's going to happen to him.

Thanks.

Hoorah! This posting is much sooner than I'd anticipated. Perfect diversion on a "sick day".

“I suspect that is so," Alcaren said, his eyes darkening. "As you may know, Minas Tirith and Minas Morgul were once sister cities, built in spirals climbing ever skyward; with a tower atop both. The guard post of which you speak was also built by the Men of Gondor, as a watchtower on the edge of the Black Lands. It would be logical to assume that it is, in appearance, of like fashion to the other towers – with its most secure rooms at the top; however, I do not know of anyone now living who has reported back as to its true nature."
I never thought of this, but it makes sense!

Pippin nodded to himself, but said nothing. He was the only hobbit who had seen Denethor’s palantír, and heard the rumors of where it had been kept. He wondered if the King now kept, in the same upper chamber, the Seeing Stone that Gandalf had given him near Isengard. Pippin wondered what it would be like to hold the Stone once again, now that someone like Strider controlled it, and not Saruman. To look into its depths again... With an effort, he shook off the unbidden thought.
Ooo, Pip-angst and possibilities. Wonder if you'll be taking this idea any further? Or is it just a side trail, momentarily to divert the reader?

“I do not believe this room has been used in many a year,” Faramir said, looking around and motioning for the hobbits to enter. “No one was held here long, it was rather for...” He quickly came to Frodo’s side. “My friend, are you unwell?”
Now you have stirred my curiosity. What was the room rather for?

And if it hasn't been all that long since Frodo was out of bed, we might perhaps see Bergil, or Beregond (still awaiting his hearing before the King)? (Sorry, still obssessed with that plot point. Want RabidSamFan to continue her "Errand Lad" right to the point of joy at Beregond's reprieve... or beyond, would be nice.)

Ooh, what an exciting beginning!! You've started something so interesting here, exploring the link between Minas Tirith and Minas Morgul, and I can't wait to see where you take it. I *loved* seeing the hobbits spending some time with Faramir, and also their card game and Frodo "cheating" and Pippin being drawn once again to the palantir....eee! I hope you post the next part soon! :D

Oh dear! I can't think the other three are going to approve *at all* of what it seems that Frodo has in mind. And it seems Pippin is still somewhat drawn to the palantir. This is a very intriguing beginning, Shirebound, and I have to say I am *really* looking forward to more!
