Nice Eowyn flashback! I've never seen you write anything about her before. She is my favorite character next to the hobbits.

Another thing that impresses me about your stories is how on earth you think up all these names. I have a hard enough time trying to think of unused hobbit names, and they're the easy ones. I'd have such trouble w/ Gondor and Rohan names!

Author Reply: This was my first time to write her, actually. I had fun with her, for I'd had this part of Menelcar's backstory in my head for a long time.

Names. JRRT was very particular about naming, but I have learned a few of his secrets. He used names of Merovingian, Frankish, or Gothic origin for upper class hobbits. He used Old English very simple names for lower class hobbits. And for the Rohirrim, he used Anglo-Saxon names. Here are some of the websites I use to find names:

http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/aelfwyn/bede.html#Women's%20Names

http://www.20000-names.com/male_anglo_saxon_names.htm

Now for female hobbits, flowers, plants and jewels are appropriate. I only use last names that I find in JRRT, for the most part.

For Gondorian or Numenorean or Elvish names, just go in the index and pick out names that JRRT used; he recycled the names all the time. Numenoreans used Elvish names, so they are interchangeable. If there are not enough in LotR, check The Silmarillion, or different volumes of HoME.

This is another story which is going on my list of unmissable tales. How wonderful for Pippin to meet up with Menelcar again, and I love all the hobbity interaction (as you know).

I also enjoyed the flashback - Eowyn would have been a tomboy of course - and naturally Menelcar would have visited Rohan on his travels.

I'm looking forward to Sam's surprise and more Fellowship fun. Lovely!

Author Reply: So glad you are enjoying it! There really is nothing like hobbity interaction to make one feel all warm and happy!

Of course, on both counts. Actually, the encounter with Eowyn has always been a part of Menelcar's backstory--in the first story he thinks about having stayed in Rohan at one point.

Oh, Sam will be surprised, all right!

LOL, Pippin *would* be born on April Fool's Day. Very fitting. ;) Don't have my book with me at the moment - what is the significance of Merry's birthday?

I greatly enjoyed this little glimpse into Eowyn's childhood. I can sympathize with her greatly, having been a bit of a tomboy myself. It's always more fun to do what the boys do. ^_^ And my theory was right, they're planning to surprise Sam for his birthday. Sam won't know how to react! But he deserves it.

Author Reply: I thought you'd appreciate that!

Merry's birthday was chosen because (a)that was the last full they spent in Lothlorien--the day Galadriel looked in the Mirror and (b)because in our world it's Valentine's Day, and I think of Merry as a bit of a romantic.

Yes, she was quite a tomboy, wasn't she?

I thought you might have tumbled to it being a birthday surprise; I wasn't exactly subtle, LOL! And yes, he deserves it very much!!
