Okay, NOW Panic!  by Boz4PM 633 Review(s)

(hopefully you know who I am. :D)

Excellent, excellent job, both on this chapter and the one before it (which I only got to just now). And, for that matter, on the entire 'fic, start to finish! I don't think there was a single chapter that didn't completely yank me in from the start. Excellent job-- I don't think I can say that enough, and there really isn't a better word for it.

In a way, I'm kind of sad, because this was one of the things that, when I popped online, I was always checking for. "Is there a new Panic? ...Awww." "Is there a new Panic? YES!" Both stories were awesome, and thank you so much for posting them-- yes, I know that they demand to be posted at times, but your stories have meant so much, to others besides me, I'm sure.

But, as you said, every story has to end. I'll be looking forward to the drabbles, though. ^^

Again, great job; thank you; congratulations. ^^ *hugs*

Author Reply: (um... remind me? ¬¬) ;P Hee!

Thanks, hon, and thanks for reading! :D

I've so enjoyed these stories - the nice, long chapters are good to get into. I've loved all the emotional bits. It's good that it all turns out alright in the end.

Author Reply: How could it otherwise? I've been such a cow to her all these years, it was only fair that she should get some sort of happy ending. ;) Thanks for reading!

Yes, Yes, it's that strange little artist from deviantART who did a bit of fanart for Don't Panic here. It kind of figures I wouldn't actually review this until the very last chapter...

I've been reading DP/ONP since chapter 4 of DP, first on ff.net, and then on here when I abandoned that place for good when I realised you had posted them elsewhere. All I can really say is that they are, and always will be, my favourite fanfictions ever. In no other fanfics have I laughed and cried as much with the characters as I did with these, in a story I fell in love with years ago. I'm even tearing a bit right now, knowing that it's all over... =') I certainly will miss looking forward to the new chapters (even the ones that took ages to come; I always jumped for joy every time I noticed a new one up.)

I will even (sadly) admit that I enjoy reading your fictions with Penny more than the great work by Tolkein himself (although I will keep my pledge to read it at least once a year; usually around xmas, but I think I might change it to January in honour of Penny's start in ME.).

I'm glad to see that, despite some problems, Penny and Halladan's life together was happy; I and many others wouldn't have it any other way, as you know. XD

You are a master of fanfiction, and rather than spinning in his grave, I'd rather believe Tolkein would be smiling at you from The West. ;) As Redheredh said, you have certainly earned your place in fanfic fame and history indeed, and I really, *really* look forward to seeing any one-shots you manage in the future. One thing I love about the ending, and Tolkein's work actually, is that you actually tell what happens to the characters once the story has ended; this is something that always drives me crazy when I finish a series of books; what happens to them next? Will they be happy and live in peace? If there's a couple, will they have children, and what will happen to them if they do? So many stories never answer these questions, and it always leaves a little sadness in me when I can never find out what happened to the characters I fell in love with after it's all over.

Thank you for creating such a wonderful fic. It has kept my ever-diminishing faith in fanfiction aloft for so long, and that you actually managed to finish it...well, I think I'm just going to have to do just as Alassiel said and read it again from the very beginning. =)

Author Reply: Hello there! And thank you - both for reading for all this time and sticking with it, but also for that lovely piece of fanart you did - really captured that scene beautifully. :D

Well, I knew the story would end soon, but it was a bit of a surprise that it came *so* soon. I was glad to know a bit about what happened to Penny and Halladan and the others later on. It sounds realistic that there was no ‚happily ever after’, but some problems and arguments, considering their tempers and the circumstances of their place and time. And it is certainly sort of logical that Penny was a descendant of herself. When you mentioned January 2004, I knew where it would lead :) I wonder if the possibility ever dawned on her. It would probably be comforting for her to know their descendants lived on for so long.

I will miss this story very much *sniffle* As it is so special, it can’t be replaced by other fics. There’s no Penny, after all. But I really hope RL will allow you a few hours here and there to write little one-shots, as you already implied; it would make the parting from this fic easier.

Anyway, I want to say a very big ‚Thank you’ for writing these two storys in the first place, for continuing in spite of your lack of time, for writing such a convincing and realistic story showing Middle-earth through the eyes of someone of our time. You did a great job with it, and I enjoyed it very much and will re-read it from time to time, no doubt about that.

**big bear hug**

Author Reply: Well, I kept it quiet if only because it would come so hot on the heels of Halladan and Penny FINALLY getting together and I did not want to risk people guessing the result of that storyline 'because there's only one chapter left and Boz would not leave us hanging'. So, yeah, probably was a bit of a shock to some, I suspect. Sorry about that.

Thanks, and thank you for reading. *hugs back* :)

Ah Boz what a stunningly perfect ending. *sighs*

I knew the second the answering machine clicked the message where you were going. Parting from this wonderful fan fic will be sweet sorrow, but thankfully you have this posted more than one place and you were kind enough to link us to you LJ. I do hope you have time to drabble about them from time to time. It will have a hallowed place in my favorites. A story ending with such sweet irony is nothing but perfect.

I do have to ask about your banner at your LJ for this fic, ;) who are the lads portraying Halladan and Arvain? I hope that is who is depicted. LOL
And is the pic of Penny you? Would her eyes be that color? * blushes * I was working on a fan art. It would be the first time I have created something for a loved story at my DA account, linking back to your story here.

You were so kind to thank everyone, but it is us the readers that should thank you. You did a fantastic job! So many authors start their stories and never finish them this was a pure delight to read. If anyone reading these reviews has not read the first story please do. Both of them were perfect in detail and devotion of the author to hold your intrest and draw you into the story. Boz brought Rivendell alive. I have not had so much fun reading since my obession with the Mellon Chronicles a year ago. Boz you totally rock girl!!!!! :D

Author Reply: The one on the left is (sort of) Arvain and the one on the right (sort of) Halladan. And, no, the picture of the girl is not me, just a random pic I found that struck me as suitably Penny-ish in terms of pose, attitude and (sort of) looks. As I explained when I made the banners and icons: "Please note - that although three pics have been cast as Halbarad, Arvain and Halladan, the actor/models themselves don't usually look anything like how I imagine those three characters to look. Nor do these three pics look exactly how I imagine them either, just 'near enough' and 'sort of right-ish'... perhaps... vaguely... maybe. :P" lol! The model for Arvain is a Greek (Theodoros Theodoridis) and Halladan is a Brit (David Gandy). In most pics neither look anything like how I think of those characters, but in those two pics the pose/attitude was right and the facial characteristics sort of there (nearly). ¬¬ I posted them originally on my LJ, but you can also find them all on my icons LJ here: http://community.livejournal.com/bozicons/8749.html :)

As for Penny's eye colour - whatever you like. :) In my mind they are brown, but I've never described her in detail and quite deliberately. As a HUGE fan of radio drama and book adaptations (I am an avid Radio 4 fan), where you almost never get descriptions of the character due to time constraints, I enjoy letting readers invent their own images and ideas of characters within their heads, so everyone's idea of Penny, Halladan and the rest will be different. I hate it when an author describes a character in minute detail and I just can't 'get' what they mean or it doesn't square with what I was already thinking. The only writer I know who can pull it off every time is Dickens, whose is just AWESOME as an author.

Do let me know when you've posted the fanart - I'd love to see it! Either swing by to my LJ or else ping me on DA. :)

Thank you for reading and enjoying it! :D

I, for one, am actually quite glad that you have finished but only because you have timed it well with the arrival of my e.book reader so I can go back to the beginning and read it all over again. I too would love to read the fill-ins and further explorations that you come up with. Well done Boz and thank you for such an entertaining tale.

Thank you! for writing this wonderful and entertaining story!

Thanks to Nilmandra for getting you to post it here at SOA. Many thanks to your betas and friends and readers for encouraging you not to quit.

I truly enjoyed this realistic look at a modern girl falling into Middle-earth. You are an insightful and talented writer. I feel terribly guilty about always letting other people leave reviews, and here at the end, this being the only one I have offered. Better late than never, I guess. But, what I really wanted to say is:

Congratulations! on a work of literature well done and a novel task nicely completed! You and Penny have deservedly entered into Tolkien fanfiction fame and history. Now Enjoy It!! A good story does not end; it is read again forever!

Oh and thanks also for promising a bit more Penny panic to let us down easy... ;D

Utterly and completely perfect, dear! The ultimate in the old time-travel conundrum "I'm my own (umpteen times great) grandmother" story! And it's as good an explanation as any--she had to go back in time, because obviously she *did* go back in time or she wouldn't exist.

While I confess that I would have been just as happy to see the wedding, and perhaps a future meeting between Penny and the remaining three hobbit Travellers, I agree with you that this is just the right way to wrap it all up.

And I look forward to those future gapfillers, ficlets and vignettes as the time and inspiration provides them to you!!

A brilliant end to a brilliant fic!

Exactly! Hee! :D

Thanks, dreamflower! And thank you so much for reading. :D

Very lovely ending. Yes, I must admit that I would have loved to have had more, but isn't that always the case with anything that you read and enjoy? And besides, all good (great) things must come to an end. But the ending suited the story and tied it up very nicely, while leaving the opportunity to do little one-shots if the mood takes you. :) I must cheer for Arvain and Hisaeleth (sp?). I'm so very happy they finally sorted things out for themselves and that Halladan got to turn the tables a little on Arvain and call his brother an ass in turn. I laughed so loud at that part, I'm glad my roommate wasn't sleeping. I think I must say that the final chapter has followed the philosophy of this story right to the end. Having Halladan and Penny live "happily ever after" wouldn't be in keeping with the realism that's been established since chapter one of "Don't Panic", so in my humble opinion I think you did a wonderful job of keeping to how you've written this fic so far. And it has been a very fun, enjoyable, emotional, wonderful ride. (Now I get wordy in my reviews when I figure this'll be the last one... or close to it. ;) ) I've really enjoyed the ride, even though I didn't join in until partway through ONP. It's been a wonderful reading experience for me, especially since it is one of the most realistic fanfics I've ever read. Your ability to draw the reader in and have them experience the emotions and development of the characters is wonderful. :) It makes reading your writing very enjoyable and rewarding. Yours is one of the few fics that I've stayed with over the years, for that very reason. It's enjoyable and realistic to read. Thank you for sharing your writing. It's been very fun and well worth the time spent reading each chapter. Thank you again for sharing.

Es.

Author Reply: Ah, yes, I think revenge was sweet for Halladan in that moment. ;D Hee!

Thank you, and thanks for reading. :D

I love the fact that you turned her into her own grandma! it is a wonderful way of making sure your fans dont insist in a trilogy LOL! I do however look forward to seeing you write something new! Thank you for this lovely work of art. I will look for future works of yours on a regular basis . dont keep us all hanging , please!?

Author Reply: LOL! I'd not thought of it in those terms, but yeah, it at least brings it to a definite conclusion. lol!

Thanks! :D Ah, well now - NO promises. ;) RL has been insanely insane for some time and that will only increase as my little one gets 'not so little' with time. :)
