What a bittersweet chapter--the "roll call" if you would, of the changes, both good and bad, that had taken place in his beloved Bag End. I love the way you enumerate each change and Frodo's reactions to them, the way he can appreciate Gimli's contribution, his acknowledgement of those things brought back from Crickhollow that had been saved from desecration, the minor mysteries--why was Lobelia's room untouched? and why one of the cold rooms left alone? when so much else was marred and changed. And the very prosaic invitation to breakfast for Sam at the end. For some reason that struck me as very hobbity and seemingly inconsequential, and yet having more behind the simple statement, much like Sam's "Well, I'm back." at the end of LotR. Wonderful. I'm so glad to see another update to this--I've been missing it! Author Reply: I am so glad you appreciated it as it was written, Dreamflower. And it was indeed intended to be read just as you've expressed. Thanks so much for your response, and thanks to the Kid for getting me back more properly online, although all won't be fully proper until I have the desktop back and in action once more. | |
