The Acceptable Sacrifice  by Larner 19 Review(s)

Angrapain is such a slimy individual! Yuk! So glad Frodo was able to laugh at the idea of Pip having power, and loved his description of those folk in the Shire who decide not to do as the Thain tells them! How very hobbity and independent.

I was so relieved that Aragorn appeared and overheard the nosey questions. I hope he keeps those Umbarians under very close observation.

Author Reply: Oh, when Angrapain pushes too far, he gets his comeuppance, and the rest of his party as well, of course. And so glad you appreciated Frodo's description of the Thain's authority! Heh!

Urgh! I went all cold when this slime-ball left the house and felt positively sick when he started this conversation. Even his first question was completely out of order. Good thing that hobbit hearing is sharper than Angrapain's as I wouldn't have wanted Frodo to have had to continue to contend with this alone. Not that he wasn't coping well. The urge to laugh is, possibly, the least expected but most effective reaction to have. Do I guess rightly that this piece of misery is connected with a certain nasty sculptor of our acquaintance?I was beginning to hope that we might see the famous Punch! But even in this Frodo's lowered self-esteem came through. What a way to learn more about the structure of Hobbit Society. My favourite line was;

“The ruler of our land, my lord, is standing behind you.”

It says so much about Frodo's understanding of Shire history and his acceptance of the new order.

I was very surprised that Aragorn would question Frodo about lady loves, especially in so much company. I am almost glad that Frodo is just as able to ignore his, let's face it, rather snoopy question with as much dignity as his did Angrapain's insinuations. We have had hints that Frodo is not pleased that so much of his life has been told to the Bard etc in previous chapters. Now if the question had come from another of the company with the King then I would have been less surprised. But then again, maybe Frodo was also a little out of order telling on Pippin and, particularly, Sam.

As to being glad that you made me laugh as well as cry Larner (last review) I can honestly say that few things I have read have been able to evoke as many emotions in me yours do. I am so glad that Frodo was planning to curtail his walk for another mushroom raid! Just sad that he knew that he couldn't do both - walk and pick mushrooms!

Author Reply: This encounter managed to leave Frodo in fairly good humor. I suspect Aragorn's intent was partly curiosity but more to demonstrate to Angrapain that he was not figuring Frodo's proclivities properly. That Frodo would refuse to answer further I felt was consistent with his nature, and I think Aragorn wouldn't push it further at this time.

I, too, was proud when Frodo indicated the ruler of the Shire was right behind the man, and am glad this gave you a chuckle as well. As for the infamous punch--it hasn't been called for as yet.

Frodo will be back for mushrooms, I suspect. Now we know where the ones taken to Harad came from, don't we?

And am proud you find my work able to give you an emotional workout--we need to be able to exercise all the emotions, and it's a good part of why I've loved the books and movies so much over the years. True spiritual theater at its best.

Creepy, insinuating, stalking Umbari. Ech. Ick. Yuck. Goosebumps. *shudder* ~TF

Author Reply: Yes, a true pervert. And I think no one really likes him any more. And shortly Gimli will be wanting to do unspeakable thing to him....

I love it that Frodo recognized the footsteps and turned the conversation around. Angrapain’s got a much bigger audience for this conversation than he had expected! He is a slimy and scary beast the way you've written him, and if his intentions are as obvious as they seem, I hope Frodo gets a 24 hour guard even if he balks at it. Aragorn would be smart enough to hide some guards around, and to alert the house staff to danger, wouldn't he?

“What?” Frodo didn’t understand what the Man meant at first; and then it hit him. He felt as if he must be flushing completely, although all Angrapain could see was that spots of pink were coloring the Perian’s cheeks. “Sam? You would think that Sam and I would---?”

*snigger* Not a slasher, are you?

Author Reply: No, not a slasher. I've read a few, and actually enjoy the ones that are intended to be satiric and a couple of truly gentle ones; but most I find offensive.

And Frodo's humor and hobbit hearing do serve him well in this one.

The whole affair will be finished within a few hours MT time, although it will take a few days OUR time....

It seems that the delegation from Harad will soon become a real Angrapain in the neck for Aragorn. . .

He'd better deal with that nasty lech quickly. Threatening a Hobbit like that -- he should go pick on someone his own size. But Frodo's response was pitch-perfect, especially his thoughts on the possibility of Pippin ever wielding power at his age.

Author Reply: Oh, it's fun watching people respond to this chapter, and especially the puns!

Aragorn will indeed deal with Angrapain and company, but not before they make themselves totally obnoxious, I fear. So glad you like Frodo's reactions once the more absurd statements (for those who know hobbits, at least) begin being made.

Ick Ack - AngryPain of Umbar has been reading...Hobbitslash! Quick, Frodo, go wash your hands before he breathes on you or something - you don't know where he's been!

The idea of that slimy Umbari making such suggestions.

Mushrooms. Heh-heh-heh. Good for Frodo.

Author Reply: As I think you know, although I have enjoyed a few examples of Hobbit slash, it's not my cup of tea usually. And I also think its popularity would appall Tolkien, particularly between Frodo and Sam.

And isn't it truly funny how offended we are when someone makes such perverse and totally crude suggestions to OUR Frodo?

Glad you enjoyed the humor of this chapter. Be warned there will be a rematch.

“The Thain is the ruler of your land?”

“The ruler of our land, my lord, is standing behind you.”

Oh, Bravo, Frodo! The way to deal with a fool is to keep calm and not be baited -- and escape at the earliest opportunity.

Author Reply: Frodo is saved this time by a quiet approach and the incongruity of the idea of Pippin as either a prince or as his lover. His own sense of the absurd win the day this time, as well as his appreciation that this pervert has no understanding of folks unlike himself at all. Glad you appreciated the humor in this one.

Now I don't know if I should be more annoyed about Angrapains odd questions - don't have any idea what he wanted to achieve with that! - or to howl with laughter about Frodo's last remark! Morels, indeed! *giggles*

Honestly, Larner, this idiot of an Umbarian should be thrown out of Minas Tirith! How can he dare to ask Frodo *such* questions? I doubt I could've been so calm and patient with him! And I am *so* glad Aragorn and Éomer and the others heard it, too - they will not forget his impertinence!

Author Reply: You will learn more about Angrapain's motivations and what he'd hoped to accomplish soon--but he has no idea how to deal with Hobbits, I fear. But I think you will shortly feel a deep kinship with Gimli.

As for what is going to happen with these, I hope you find it appropriate.

What a lovely twist for that filthy minded man to find Aragorn standing there and that Frodo's lust was for mushrooms !

Author Reply: Glad you enjoyed the irony of the situation. But Angrapain is not easily deterred, unfortunately.
