The Acceptable Sacrifice  by Larner 14 Review(s)

The one with the auburn curls followed the one with brown hair as he returned to the side of the King of Rohan. “Oh, Merry, I thought a dream had come true!” he was saying. “It has been so long since he danced last. To see him out there again, his face alight, bringing out the best in his partner....”

Oh I felt just like Pippin! And to actually see Frodo besting Aragorn in the dancing was great.
Lovely description in all of this Larner, from clothes to people, from food to ceremony.
What a lot the visitors have to learn, unlearn and relearn. Thinking that Gandalf is Saruman for instance! I just hope that certain members of the party don't think that hobbitnapping might be a way of gaining an advantage over the new King!

Author Reply: Yes, I, too, feel with Pippin here. And every few steps forward Frodo makes in his recovery is accompanied by others backwards or sideways. He's not truly well, a fact he is finding very frustrating and perhaps a bit frightening.

And am glad you appreciate the description of the feast and of the confusion of the party from Umbar. It's not going to be easy for any of them to understand. Am not certain they might try hobbitnapping; but I, too, feel uncomfortable around them.

Whoops!
Interesting to see things from an outsider's viewpoint. It was nice to see a spark of enjoyment in Frodo, and a shame that little bit of fun cost him so. ~TF

Author Reply: Hope you don't mind I deleted the one that accidentally was posted blank. That happens, although over the last couple days I've written wonderfully lyrical reviews and responses and then hit BACK instead of POST REPLY and then beaten myself up.

In my previous works I've always described Frodo as one who loved to dance, and here's his first time to indulge himself in years--and then he finds he can't sustain it. That he tires so easily must be exceedingly frustrating to him.

And we keep having outsiders, don't we? Well, it adds to the interest.

Oh, that was wonderful to see him dancing!!

Author Reply: Thanks, Antane. I've always thought of Frodo as a dancer since the film, where he's cutting a caper between the two winsome hobbit misses. I'd love to have been at this feast just to have seen him dancing in more than my imagination, really. And he deserves to dance.

Again the quiet courtesy shown by the Perian. Then the other Periannath were clustered about the seated one, the one with the hair of dark gold taking possession of the second goblet. Somehow Wasnior was not surprised to see a second low chair produced and this one take it. He examined the faces of the two taller Periannath, noting they were alert and cheerful, but each also exhibited signs he had been less than whole recently. The one with the auburn curls and green eyes had a narrower face, more similar to the one named Frodo Baggins, and he held himself in check as if he held within a fount of restless energy that would have him careering off the walls and other guests if not properly controlled. The one with the hair of warm brown also had about him the air of responsibility seen in the one called Sam, his eyes examining the company carefully.

It's marvelous seeing the hobbits through the eyes of someone who has never even imagined such a race before. And I love how Aragorn is continually aware of and attentive to Frodo's well-being.

...now that the world had changed...

Wonderful line!

Author Reply: Yes, a newcomer who perhaps even is unaware of the tales of halflings, much less that there is a party of them in Minas Tirith, who is having to figure out what they mean to the new order.

And I'll admit I stole that line about the world changing from Galadriel's prologue--thought it was well worth using here. For all are becoming well aware that the world HAS changed completely, and is in for quite a transition.
