Whispers of the Dragon  by shirebound 21 Review(s)

This was a very tense and believeable chapter - poor Frodo, ever the target for the orcs and drawing the Nazgul like a magnet. Nice to see that Frodo can be angry sometimes, and with reason. He's usually portrayed as impossibly saintly and it is nice to see him displaying real traits.

I loved Gimli's conversation with Pippin - he's an old softy really! And Pip's name for the axe is perfect. Orc-bane indeed!

Ah, the Nazgul puts in an appearance. That was thrilling.

Orc-Bane! I think, Pippin found the perfect name for Gimli's axe!

The river scene was simply great.
Maybe, Frodo really hadn't realized before how badly he was hurt by the Morgul knife and how close he was to becoming a wraith.
And good old Aragorn, always the practical ranger, is right: his ability to "sense" the Nazgul can (and will) be very useful at times.

Poor Frodo! It had never occurred to me to wonder how he would have felt to realize that he could still feel the Morgul wound, and that he was still sensitive to the presence of Nazgul! But of course, the first time it happened, he must have felt dreadfully angry to know the pain was coming back--really the first intimations of what he would suffer the rest of his life!

I love the way you are weaving your story throughout the actual book events. Legolas bringing down the fell beast is one of those memorable moments. Also, their experience makes more clear movie Aragorn's reluctance to move toward the eastern shore until night falls again...

The interaction between Pippin and Gimli was wonderful. You keep ALL the members of the Fellowship connected throughout this story, letting us understand from whence comes the strength of this bond and its importance to the Quest and to Frodo.

What a lovely moment between Pippin and Gimli!

Your expansion on the original scene, close to the Eastern shore, was very true to the original work, and gripping to read.

"Cross" indeed! Very hobbity.

The boat sequence was very exciting - you had me on the edge of my seat! And I especially enjoyed seeing Pippin and Gimli interact at the beginning. I love their friendship :)

I think reading so many h/c fics where the hobbits, particularly Frodo, are made weak and girlish that I've become very sensitive to fics that stray towards such treatments. I know lots of people like it so I don't complain but I wanted to thank you for this chapter and at last showing me a defiant, resolute Frodo rather than just telling me he is so. I very much appreciated it.

Yet another great chapter! I adore protective!Gimli with Pippin - neatly foreshadows the Gimli who's willing to search through corpses on a battlefield to try to find Pippin. And Aragorn's so gentle with Frodo, trying to get him to see what good he can from the results of his wounding.

Just lovely!

The Dwarf was beginning to think he had been given a task as impossible as finding mithril on the moon; he hauled the hobbit back just as Pippin was about to dash off for the third time.

*snickers*

And the rest - simply marvelous. I like Aragorn's remarks about the wound; very clever and convincing. I'm eagerly looking forward to more!
